Bivy for winter weather or emergency

Adventure Medical Thermo-Lite Outdoor Bivy Sack 1 person

Adventure Medical Thermo-Lite Outdoor Bivy Sack 1 person

Rating for this product: 5 December 28, 2005

For those looking for an emergency bivy or for someone like myself seeking a lightweight bivy for use under a smallish tarp or poncho, this is what you are looking for. I found the bivy useful in cold weather when used in conjunction with a vapor barrier bag liner inside my down bag (as this bivy is not made of breathable material, although it does have a foot vent and large head end opening). It repacks into it's small stuff sack without force, and should last many outings with careful use as it is constructed with somewhat fragile material, similar to the fabric in FroggToggs rainwear only thinner. Could use a lower price given its high wear potential, but overall it’s a useful product for me.

50th Anniversary Backpack

Kelty 50th Anniversary Backpack - 7200 cu in

Rating for this product: 3 March 14, 2005

I like the pack's layout, the large usable side pockets are much nicer than the odd shaped ones on the Kelty Tioga models. I'd prefer a third on the front replacing the mesh pocket. My scales didn't show the pack to be any lighter than the older Tioga model, don't know why other reviews rave on six pounds being lighter than most other external models. On a test hike the waistbelt and other adjustable straps frequently required readjustment often enough for me to decide to sell the pack. My other brand backpack always held its strap settings. I've never had a waistbelt slip loose so much. It felt like the straps are teflon coated :-)
