22 Designs Hammerhead Telemark Binding

January 5, 2012

I had a spring squeak for the first two days of use on brand-new bindings. Once I readjusted the cable tension after initial break-in, they're pretty quiet -- I think. We've had nothing but noisy conditions so far, so if there is still a squeak, it's faint.
Get a set. You won't regret.

That saying should be trademarked.

Norrøna Lofoten Gore-Tex Pro Shell Jacket - Men's

Norrøna Lofoten Gore-Tex Pro Shell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2011

This stuff is fantastic. I've got the full setup from last year, but had a mishap with the jacket at the end of the season. Replacing this is not cheap (as in "Holy crap! Did I actually pay that much?!!?) but absolutely worth the money if you know you'll be facing harsh winter conditions. Maybe I can keep this one intact for a year.

Elan 1010 ALU Alpine Ski

Elan 1010 ALU Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 4 December 20, 2010

Tahoe went off this weekend (sort of) and had a few feet of wet, heavy stuff to play in.
My usual all mountain planks nosedove all over the mountain, but after switching out to the 1010s, it was a completely different experience.
Kept me on top of the muck, railed out on the hardpack, and launched airs over the ugly stuff.

Great ride for mixed, potentially crappy conditions. Probably great for powder -- when we get it.

Norrøna Lofoten Gore-Tex Performance Shell Insulated Jacket - Men's

November 22, 2010

Got a chance to try this out in wind and blowing snow this weekend. Just fantastic. Echoing what the rest of the reviewers have said, the details are worth the extra cash. Hood keeps out wind and snow, the wire brim keeps vision unobstructed, warm, yet not too warm, great vents. When used in conjunction with Lofoten pants, you're bulletproof.

Norrøna Lofoten Gore-Tex Performance Shell Insulated Jacket - Men's

October 1, 2010

So, I see that the uninsulated version of this jacket zips to the Lofoten pants. Does the insulated version zip-in as well? Thanks!

Hestra Army Leather Gore-Tex XCR Glove

March 5, 2010

I have a pair of both, and greatly prefer the Hestras. Actually, my ultimates are in the loaner pile these days, as I experienced cold spots throughout all fingers with the Marmots. The Hestras have worked great, though.

When matched with the right BA pad, you can take this down pretty low. Big pluses for convenience of the pillow pocket, and the comfort of the draft collar. As mentioned in other reviews below, you have to be careful which pad you pair with this, as it's thin on the bottom, intended to be complemented by the pad.

Absolutely worth the bump in weight -- in winter

Big Agnes Two Track Pad - Mummy

Big Agnes Two Track Pad - Mummy

Rating for this product: 4 February 22, 2010

Really pleased with the performance of this pad. Spent a long weekend camped out in 10-degree temps, with consistent driving snow, and this thing was my oasis. Inevitable water pools in the (crappy) tent were unnoticed (comfort-wise). Never had any cold spots on the bottom of the sleeping bag. Plush cushioning, and as referenced below, you can inflate this pad to board-stiff firmness. Good stuff. Highly recommended for winter backcountry trips.

Suspension bars break on the pivotal system. Once broken, they turn in to kidney pokers. Ouch. Will report back with TNF repair update.Holds a ton, comfortable while unbroken. Quality is suspicious.

Repair update: No dice. TNF offered me a prorated refund after reporting that they could not repair -- parts are no longer available. Bummer. Going back to Osprey.
