All around good backpack

Kelty Pawnee Backpack - 3300cu in

Rating for this product: 4 April 27, 2012

First off this backpack is very solid and well constructed. It's a little heavier than some backpacks of similar size, but with the weight you get more durability. I definitely don't have to baby this pack. The size is pretty nice for overnights or weekend trips and if you pack on the lighter side you can put a few days worth of gear inside it. It compresses down very well for smaller loads and the lid is removable if you want to drop a little more weight. The padding is also very nice and comfortable for wearing on long hikes. There are only a few things I don't like about this pack:

1) Unable to reach water in side pockets with pack on. You either have to stop and remove the pack or just use a camelbak.
2) Few pockets. There are only 3 main pockets in this bag, which doesn't leave much room for organization. There is the main, lid pocket (fairly large, can put a rain jacket inside), and front pocket (also fairly large).
3) Hip pockets would have been nice.

Perfect

Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets - 30 pack

Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets - 30 pack

Rating for this product: 5 May 4, 2011

Don't want to carry heavy filters around? This is the solution. These weigh next to nothing and you can have clean drinking water within 15 minutes and it kills anything possible after 4 hours. To me the 4 hours isn't a big deal, even if it was really questionable water I also carry multiple water containers so while one processes I can just drink out of the other. Great way to save +10oz off your pack weight.

CamelBak Big Bite Valve Cover

CamelBak Big Bite Valve Cover

Rating for this product: 5 May 4, 2011

Does exactly what I want it to, protects my bite valve from getting dust, sand, mud, or whatever else you mind run into in the backcountry. It was a little difficult getting on, but I would assume that's a good thing since you don't want it to be able to fall off with your bite value. I recommend it for your CamelBak.

Black Diamond Trail Trekking Poles: The Perfect Poles?

Black Diamond Trail Trekking Pole

Rating for this product: 5 March 20, 2011

These poles rock!

I was in a long debate with myself on whether to go with foam or cork, but these are awesome. I've hiked about 12 miles with them so far and no a single blister. The grips are also super comfortable. I've read a few reviews saying that the loops on the poles fall apart, but I haven't seen anything like that on mine and they are in tip top shape. The extended grips are great for going up ascents without having to change the length of the poles. If you do have to change their length it only takes a flip, push/pull, and flip. Perfect for cold weather if you want to change your pole lengths while wearing gloves. They are also super lightweight at just over a pound and collapse down small for transport.

I used these poles for some creek crossing and then tossed them across the creek to help the members in my group that were without poles once they crossed they said they were nice and wanted the name of the poles I had. :D

Definitely a great buy.

Also, mucho kudos to Backcountry for matching prices for me. You CAN NOT beat Backcountry when it comes to products and amazing customer service.

Marmot Zeus Down Jacket - Men's

February 28, 2011

I'm 5'11 and 135lbs and the small fits me just fine and there is plenty of room for a heavy fleece underneath it. It looks tight, but that's just due to the fluffiness of the jacket. I think you'd be happy with a small.
