  • Stomping Grounds:

    Appalachian Mountains, Southern/Eastern Ohio
  • Bio:

I am a thirty-something father of twin boys who doesn't get much time to play outside. I work a lot of hours as a Web developer and live in a part of the U.S. that isn't very conducive to outdoor activity. But, when I do get out, I play hard. I love backpacking, camping, and hiking, and am always looking to upgrade my gear to better fit my next pursuit.

After camping in the Rockies this past year, I am looking forward to planning more trips west and east, including the Arizona canyonlands and parts of the AT.

Awesome Little Lantern

Black Diamond Orbit Lantern

Black Diamond Orbit Lantern

Rating for this product: 5 December 14, 2011

Perfect "luxury item" for backpacking. Puts out an amazing amount of light and still compacts down to almost nothing. Weighs almost nothing, too. Liked mine so much I bought one for someone on my Christmas list!

Marmot Limelight 3-Person Tent w/ Footprint and Gear Loft

November 25, 2011

Customer service is top-notch. My Limelight came without a plastic clip for the fly. I called customer service and they sent it via Fedex 2-day. I can't say enough good things about them. Marmot rocks!

Good, But Maybe Not the Best

Petzl Tikka Plus 2 Headlamp

Petzl Tikka Plus 2 Headlamp

Rating for this product: 3 July 27, 2011

While it is a good lamp, there might be better alternatives such as the Black Diamond Byte, or even an Energizer lamp. In fact, Outside Magazine's "Gear of the Year" did not even mention Petzl in their headlamp lineup at all.

Still, the two times I have used this it has served me well. I have used it for both camping in the Rockies and early morning fishing in Tennessee. The four different light modes are nice, but in pitch dark I generally keep it on the brightest setting. For night fishing, I used the red "night" light to be able to see and not scare the fish away. This worked well--I caught several fish, and it was much easier on my eyes.

The light housing seemed to resist water well while tromping through the rain from my tent to the latrine in Colorado. However, cold air killed my batteries fast. This isn't so much a fault of the lamp as it was my batteries. My biggest gripe is the "low battery indicator", that essentially warned me the batteries were low right before they stopped working altogether. Not very useful.

The Tikka Plus 2 is a good lamp and serves its purpose well. But, there might be better, cheaper alternatives on the market that outshine this popular item.

Terrific Pack!

Osprey Packs Kestrel 48 Backpack - 2800-2900cu in

Rating for this product: 4 March 22, 2011

The hype is all true. Osprey packs are amazing! I took this pack out two weekends ago to the Hoosier National Forest in Indiana, and it was perfect. We hiked fifteen miles and the pack felt great. I had a tent, sleeping bag, cold weather gear, and other items and this pack was comfortable the entire time. The straps are nicely padded, the hip belt is comfortable, and the extra "bells and whistles" really round out the pack. This baby is going with me to the Rockies in May for some serious mountaineering, and I know it can handle the job perfectly!
