The bag wouldn't fit anything else in it and it easily fit in the overhead compartment. The medium size is technically too big for most airplane carry on standards, but because its shape changes so much I think it could easily pass for a carry on.

TNF Boulder runs a tad short and a little wider. As you can see from the picture the Sorel liner is way wider. This is partially because thicker songs are worn with this boot and that they are cut wide.

This jacket is great to have in your pack if the wind kicks up or if there is a light passing shower. That being said it would NOT stand up as a primary rain jacket. I have the Beta AR and use it as my rain / everything jacket.

Petzl makes great harnesses and I have had very good luck with them. If you have larger legs, GO WITH ADJUSTABLE leg loops. I know it is on sale and a great deal, but you will end up having to get another harness.
As far how the leg loops, they will fall somewhere on your upper side and below your butt on the back side. I keep the loops a little looser when belaying and climbing moderate stuff. If I'm really working something or know there is a chance I could take a whipper I keep it a little more snug.
Check out the Petzl Adjama $89.90 and has adjustable leg loops

Peter,These poles are fully adjustable and will work well for someone who is 5'2" or 6'2". Check out http://www.bdel.com/gear/trail.php to get a better idea of the flip lock. My first pair of trekking poles were the BD Contour and they have been amazing. The compact size is unavailable, only standard/regular is left. The height difference between compact and regular will not really make a difference, the advantage would be in narrower grips for your sister's hands. Mahalo, Sumo

Hello,The answer is a little of both. Most climbers are going to wear a smaller shoe size to get a tighter fit. Combine that with a lot of skate shoes run a little small because of the additional padding. I'm guessing in most running, casual, and boots you are somewhere in between the two sizes. Sportiva tends to work well for feet that are medium/narrow. Mahalo, Sumo

Hello,These shoes are waterproof. There are 2 main water prof membrane materials (a layer sandwiched the otter and inner fabric of the shoe) used. One of them is Gortex which is often abbreviated as GTX. In addidion, XCR (Extended Comfort Ranged) is another type of Gortex that is more breathable. The other material is called eVent. There is a lot of information on both of these on the internet. When looking for running shoes that are waterproof it will usually say one of those key words (Gortex, GTX, XCR, or eVent) in the description of under the product details. Margaret,I do not remember if these shoes have a marking sole (I will tweak my answer tomorrow). More importantly these shoes should not be used as a PE shoe. Brianguy,Technically you do not need to do anything to prep these shoes for the elements. They have a Gortex liner in between the leather and the liner, this will keep your foot dry (in snow or heavy rain). The outside of almost all boots come with a treatment from the tannery that is water repellent. Because I'm very particular I always put an additional coat of a full grain leather boot treatment (you don't have to clean your boots when they are new). You could use this Nikwax product from BC http://www.backcountry.com/store/NIK0046/Nikwax-Fabric-Leath

Ken,The Blueridge has a very very stiff sole. If you prefer something that isn't going to give underneath the weight of you and your pack then this is definitely a good boot to look at. As for it being too warm in the summer, I don't think it would be. The tongue has a little more cushioning then the Torre. Basically the temperature will run comparable to any full grain leather gortex lined boot. If anything I would say it will run cold in the winter. Mahalo, Sumo

Jonathon,I'm sure you have experienced difficulty in finding extra wide shoes in casual styles. For mountaineering boots it is close to impossible. My best advice is to get a pair of plastic boots from Koflach. The shells come in whole sizes while the liners come in half sizes. If you know someone at a good ski shop they should know how to heat the plastic and shape it out. The downside is you won't have a warranty for your new boots. Other then that I do not know how you are going to find a comfortable extra wide insulated boot. Hope that gives you a starting point.Mahalo, Sumo

Ed,This shoe is going to be comfortable and work for the average person in average conditions. I would look at a boot that is more rugged and stiff. Look at the backpacking boot section for more appropriate options. Most boots in there will have a synthetic shank that adds stiffness to the boot. When you are wearing 100+ lbs on your back with a lighter weight boot it will bend and twist over every protruding rock. Keep in mind full grain leather boots will be less breathable then mesh boots, but will show less wear. Compared to standard issue boots, almost any backpacking boot will be more breathable. Robert,This boot has great traction, about 6" high, and will keep your foot dry. In terms of wearing it in the snow is really subjective. If you are in a really cold climate nothing will replace a winter boot. If you just have a little snow order 1 size up (this boot runs a little small) and get a heavy weight sock to wear with it. A heavier weight hiking boot might be a nice balance of the two, perhaps Montrail Torre.Mahalo, Sumo

Erin,Do you typically wear a US W 11.5 or a Euro 42? Do you measure at a B width (woman's medium)? Montrail and La Sportiva both have some women specific boots in a Euro 42. Your other option is going to be buying a size 10 or so in a men's. When doing this you will need to add a spacer underneath the insole to better fit the width. Good luck.Mahalo, Sumo

Hello,A lot of the features are pretty similar technically. Main differences are the heel on the ultra. Do you see the colored dots along the heel? These are suppose to absorb more shock and squish out while running (they do not go out that much). Also, the forefoot is more rigid. With a lot of shoes it is half marketing half truth. Can say I know a lot of people who tried to save money with XA Comp 2 that later upgraded to the Pro 3D. Go with the Pro 3D it is a superior and more comfortable shoe.Mahalo, Sumo

James Jones,Arc'terx is my favorite jacket line. So Alpha Theta decision time besides the length. Both jackets are made of the same material and will give you the same level of protection. Other key features they both have is helmet compatible hoods and pit zippers. Alpha: pocket on left bicep, 2 internal pockets, 2 chest pockets, Laminated quick dry chin guard,Theta: stowable hood, 1 internal pocket, 2 chest pockets + 2 hand pockets, Based off your size and weight I would recommend a L (I am not that confident with my sizing suggestion YMMV). My friend is 6"1 165" and can fit a small around his torso but needs at least a medium for the sleeve length. Do you know your suit size? or chest size? Do you know your ape index? Mahalo, Sumo

Debbie Deale, Most Keen shoes, sandals, and boots do come in half sizes. The slippers / flip flops usually come in whole sizes only. Clogs should fit pretty snug so the back lip will grip the heel (heel will slide out more then a shoe, that is normal). In what ways was the 7 too big? If you usually wear 6.5 you should be good to go. Mahalo, Sumo

Compared to the Vindicator they are pretty similar in styling and with features.Waterproofing: Both have Gortex Lacing: This style has tabs instead of eyelets. You will not notice a difference in this category. Insole: The Vindicator uses what TNF calls Norhodic footbed. It should be the same one you have in your Adrenaline. Doug Crofts,Fitting winter boots is a difficult and timely process. The good thing is once you find a boot that works it is worth it's weight in gold. What boots have you tried so far? Both the Salomon Scrambler or The North Face Four Shadows would be a great option for you. Because you have been experiencing rubbing on the shin I would avoid the Ice Storm, it uses the BOA lacing system. When lacing the boots you will want it snug through the forefoot, this will lock your heal in place. At the top it should be more relaxed allowing the shin to flex forward while walking. Bottom line: without seeing your foot I would go with the Four Shadows boot. When lacing them tie a surgeons knot between eyelets 2&3 and 3&4. There are a lot of sites that show how to tie a surgeons knot if you have not seen it done before. If you have any follow up questions please let me know.Mahalo, Sumo

Ana,The construction and fit between the two models is going to be identical. The difference is in the material of the uppers. The Pull-up has a nice full grain leather with a subtle shine. It will look professional and be is easy to maintain. The oiled is exactly that, an oiled leather. All leathers are naturally hydrophobic (water resistant) when you add oil to the leather it just makes it more so. Dankso describes this as more a rugged ready for the out door type shoe. With the oiled shoe scratches, will appear in a lighter color. These can be rubbed out fairly easy though.Bottom line: oiled would best if you wear khakis or jeans, let's call this the weekend or business casual clog. The Professional Pull-up would be ideal for a skirt or a slack. Please visit http://www.dansko.com/#detail,Professional,Stapled%20Clog,2 for more details and comparisons.Mahalo, Sumo

Shirley,Prior to your post and looking into it, I did not know anything about aqua fitness. I noticed most people don't wear shoes when doing activities in the pool. At the same time I found numerous sites selling shoes for aqua fitness activities. Does your class or instruct recommend wearing shoes in the pool? Most shoes you wear in the water are going to feel clunky and restrictive. Have you looked into water weights for your ankles to get a better workout? Anyways, these shoes will work great as a shoe you wear to the pool and in the shower room. If you wear these in the pool the chlorine will wear out the materials prematurely. Also, look at http://www.backcountry.com/store/group/170/Womens-Water-Shoe

Byron,As far as I can tell the harnesses are very similar. Both harnesses have 4 gear loops, adjustable leg loops, and a haul loop. The Momentum series was recently updated. With this update the Momentum Speed is not in the most recent BD catalogs, although still listed on their website. The Focus SA uses what BD calls SoftEdge. Basically it is able to match the curvature of body better. More surface area = better weight distribution = more comfortable to hang in. Also should hold it's shape better. The other difference is auto double backing buckles, that also come fully undone. This is a great feature because you can put the harness on and tighten it without dealing with feeding webbing through the other buckles eyelit. This will save you a lot of time in the long run! Here are some blown up photos of the Focus SA http://blkdia.bdel.com/marketing/CURRENT_products_hires_jpeg

L,I haven't seen these ones on yet so I'm not sure quite how they fit. The toe box looks like it is cut pretty low similar to a Merrell Jungle Moc. Michael,Congratulations and good luck on your summer endeavor! When fitting boots I always break things down into 4 main components: socks, insoles, lacing, and fit. All four of these will make our break the proper fit of a boot. I always wear Green or Orange Superfeet in all of my boots. If your arch is really high you might want to consider Sole insoles. These will give you much better support, keep your heal locked in place, and after a long day of hiking your feet will be much less fatigued.Socks - The Fox River X Static liner combined with the appropriate weight Smartwool hiking sock combination has always gotten the job done. Footwear - there are some people that rather have a full grain leather boot because it has less stitching and appreciate the simplicity (less things to go wrong). Others enjoy blends of leather and fabric which are often times more breathable and much lighter.I have made a few comments on several boots that would work for your trip.(+)Asolo Powermatic 200 GV, stiff with a nice bend, medium, medium high volume I highly recommend this boot. It has a great fit and is very comfortable.(+)Asolo Flame GTX, medium weight. Should provide a nice fit for your foot.(+)Montrail Torree GTX medium weight, runs narrow, not high volume(+)Montrail Blueridge GTX very stiff, runs medium to narrow, high volume(-)Scarpa Mustang GTX medium weight, medium+ width, medium volume(+)Scarpa Kailash GTX medium weight, same as Mustang (they are both built on the same last) Between the Kailash and Mustang I would lean towards the Kailash only because the more aggressive sole will suit you better with the elevation gain / drop of the John Muir trail.A lot of times a high instep foot will fit in the boot fine, until the person really starts climbing (when the forefoot flexes it will dig in to the top of the toes or lower part of the instep). Order a couple pairs and try doing some lunges in your living room and see how your feet feel. All of these boots with the exception of the Montrails, might feel loose in the width. If this is the case a five iron (very dense spacer) under your insole will solve this problem. Order at least 2 if not 3 pairs to try on, think about how many pairs you try on if you to a store. Try at least one Asolo and one Motrainl. You can decide if a heavy weight (Asolo Powermatic or Montrail Blueridge) or medium weight (Asolo Flame, Montrail Torree, or Scarpa) is more appropriate for your needs and backpacking style. Please let me know if this helped answer your question or if you have any follow up questions.Mahalo, Sumo

Dennis,I'm working on not sounding so opinionated in my answers (though it never tuns out that way), needless to say this is going to be a very opinionated answer. Since this is your daughters first pack I am imagining you or some sort of camp will be taking her out. Either you or this group will be sharing the weight of the shelter, cookware, and food. If you want your daughter to get into the outdoors and backpacking you have to ensure her first experience is enjoyable and safe. Loading a 5'3 110 pound girl with a 62L back is going to be make for a miserable and possible unsafe experience during the hike. Look at the Osprey Ariel 55 and the Aura 50, both of these are more appropriate sized packs for your daughter. Size S should work well. If you are unsure you could always try a couple pack and send back the ones you don't want.Mahalo, Sumo

Hey Ernie,In terms of sizing you should go with a 10. Their sizing is right on but they leave some wiggle room for thicker socks etc. As far as the money, jump on "live chat" and ask those folks. They'll be able to give you the most accurate information and instructions. They're great to work with so you'll be well taken care of!In my experience Sorrels run very generous (wide and high volume). Also, the way they fit is a little looser so they are pretty easy to slip on. If they aren't laced really tight the boots will slip off when you step into 10+ inches of powder. and will almost slip off in powder. If you get these wear heavy socks and add a Winter Green Superfeet to your order. Also, look at models that allow you lace further down the toe and can be laced tighter. I've attached a pic showing the insole of a Sorel compared to a casual shoe.Mahalo, Sumo

Katie,I have had Keens and Chacos that have smelled normal after years of use. At the same time I have had friends whose footwear smelled pretty rank after one season. The trick here is don't ever let the skin build up on the foot bed of the Chacos. Continuous maintenance / cleaning will keep the sandals from getting that toxic odor you described. My favorite trick is tossing them in a plastic bag and placing them in the freezer overnight. There are other things you can clean them with like vinegar or baking soda, if you are interested in finding out more do a quick search on the internet. Get you son these Chacos. They are easy to clean because they are so open and the support and comfort they provide is incomparable (I have 5 different colors in the flip and 1 pair of Z1s).Mahalo, Sumo

Dr. John,The Velocity shoe series currently comes in a low cut. A couple of common factors for a low or mid cut would be for added stability, keeping out dirt and rocks (very popular if you hike in dry or sandy environments), and crossing water. For stability it will result from the shank (see specs) TPU plate which adds lateral rigidity. Good arch support will reduce elongation and add comfort. With the higher laces it will better secure your heel (reduced slippage) and give you more support around your ankles. Look into the Vasque Catalyst Mid, it has a Gortex XCR so it will be waterproof and breathable, and great sticky rubber on the sole. If you like to hike on wet, slippery, compacted, or loose ground it would be an amazing shoe. Mahalo, Sumo

Alan,It is always difficult to explain if a particular shoe will work for a certain activity, because everyone is different. Are you hiking around the Grand Canyon for a few days or backpacking for 4 days? That right there will make a big difference for the ideal type of footwear. There are a lot of people who go there in everyday sneakers. TNF Hedgehog fit, feel, and lace system are not the best representation of North Face footwear. If you will be carrying a pack I would look at the (1) Vasque Breeze GTX and the (2) Asolo Fugitive GTX. Order both of them and try them on around your house to see which one fits better. If you want to stick with TNF check out the (4) Plasma mid height boot or the (3) Ultra 103 / 104 trail shoe. Have a safe trip to the Grand Canyon.Mahalo, Sumo

Lilstomp2,The materials and construction of the XA Pro 3D Ultra and it's predecessor XA Pro 3D GTX are almost identical. Lacking, chassis, liner, out sole, and construction haven't had any evolutions. Both models used a triple density EVA for cushioning. Now Salomon is calling this material Energy Cell, it is supposed to a new / remarketed triple density EVA that provides more cushioning. The new model is also available in a wide width. Bottom line - this is one of Salomon's best trail shoes. They have tweaked it a little so you will upgrade, but it is still the great fitting performing trail shoe we have grown to love.Mahalo, Sumo

Daniel,These Scarpa's are pretty flat on the bottom and have almost no rocker in the front of the shoe. Like most modern mountaineering boots they now have more of an anatomical fit. I have never used Foot Fangs, but imagine it will feel unnatural when walking. Take a look at some of the modern crampons on the market right now. They will be more secure and fit much better. Where is your foot the widest at? Is your foot thicker as well?If your running shoes are snug even medium with shoes that run generous will not fit that well.
