The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 250 - 9070cu in

February 11, 2009

The bag wouldn't fit anything else in it and it easily fit in the overhead compartment. The medium size is technically too big for most airplane carry on standards, but because its shape changes so much I think it could easily pass for a carry on.

Sorel Caribou vs TNF Boulder

Sorel Caribou Boot - Men's

January 28, 2009

TNF Boulder runs a tad short and a little wider. As you can see from the picture the Sorel liner is way wider. This is partially because thicker songs are worn with this boot and that they are cut wide.

Arc'teryx Squamish Pullover Jacket - Men's

June 30, 2009

This jacket is great to have in your pack if the wind kicks up or if there is a light passing shower. That being said it would NOT stand up as a primary rain jacket. I have the Beta AR and use it as my rain / everything jacket.

Petzl Hirundos Harness - Men's

June 24, 2009

Petzl makes great harnesses and I have had very good luck with them. If you have larger legs, GO WITH ADJUSTABLE leg loops. I know it is on sale and a great deal, but you will end up having to get another harness.

As far how the leg loops, they will fall somewhere on your upper side and below your butt on the back side. I keep the loops a little looser when belaying and climbing moderate stuff. If I'm really working something or know there is a chance I could take a whipper I keep it a little more snug.

Check out the Petzl Adjama $89.90 and has adjustable leg loops

Black Diamond Trail Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

February 20, 2009

Peter,These poles are fully adjustable and will work well for someone who is 5'2" or 6'2". Check out http://www.bdel.com/gear/trail.php to get a better idea of the flip lock. My first pair of trekking poles were the BD Contour and they have been amazing. The compact size is unavailable, only standard/regular is left. The height difference between compact and regular will not really make a difference, the advantage would be in narrower grips for your sister's hands. Mahalo, Sumo

La Sportiva Glacier Mountaineering Boot - Men's

February 20, 2009

George,These boots would not be ideal for hiking 70 miles not in, or in, snow. The reason for this is the Glacier is a very stiff boot that doesn't flex in the toe that easily. A similar Sportiva mountaineering boot (hybrid crampon compatible , stiffer, sportiva fit) is the Trango S Evo. http://www.backcountry.com/store/LSP0021/La-Sportiva-Trango-S-EVO-GTX-Mountaineering-Boot-Mens.html This boot is still pretty stiff but the break in time will be a lot less and in comparison springs forward when walking. Here are two additional options to look at as well Asolo Powermatichttp://www.backcountry.com/store/ASO0014/Asolo-Power-Matic-200-GV-Backpacking-Boot-Mens.html This boot is very comfortable, stable, and performs well as a workhorse boot. Another boot that would be suitable is the Salmon 3D Fastpackerhttp://www.salomonsports.com/us/#/footwear/footwear/trekking/3d-fastpacker-mid-gtxIt provides support (not as much as the heavier Sportiva or Asolo) and is great if you are more of a light packer or like to cover a lot of miles (say 70) and at a brisk pace. Best of luck.Mahalo, Sumo

KEEN Venice Sandal - Men's

February 17, 2009

Bob,The Keen sandals are made off of a medium width last. They are pretty versatile in fitting a little narrower as well as wider due to the elastic sides. If you are a C width I would suggest trying a Keen Newport H2 http://www.backcountry.com/store/KEN0002/KEEN-Newport-H2-Sandal-Mens.html (the Newport is a little more closed off). If your foot is really narrow B/A range these sandals will not fit your foot securely. Mahalo, Sumo

Merrell Waterpro Maipo Water Shoe - Women's

February 17, 2009

Lorna,Both of the Merrell and Salomon water shoes are "medium" width. With that being Salomon Tech amphibians run narrower and the Merrell sandals will run B/C. I would recommend trying shoe if you are looking for a water shoe. This would not be my recommendation for an everyday sneaker, though some do use it for that. How about the Asics Gel Kayano? Merrell Outland Mid GTX Boot - Men's

February 17, 2009

Hello,The Merrell Outland is very comfortable, but probably not the best option if you are looking for a more sturdy backpacking boot. The Asolo Fugitive is a great introductory all around boot check it out http://www.backcountry.com/store/ASO0013/Asolo-Fugitive-GTX-Hiking-Boot-Mens.htmlBesides being a prison weapon, a shank is an insert in the sole of the shoe that makes the boot stiff. Most shanks in modern boots are going to be 1/2 or 3/4 synthetic shanks. The Tech Spechs will usually state if there is a shank and what it is made of. This is a fairly effective way to judge the stiffness of a boot.Mahalo, Sumo

La Sportiva Trango Trek GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

February 14, 2009

Hello,The answer is a little of both. Most climbers are going to wear a smaller shoe size to get a tighter fit. Combine that with a lot of skate shoes run a little small because of the additional padding. I'm guessing in most running, casual, and boots you are somewhere in between the two sizes. Sportiva tends to work well for feet that are medium/narrow. Mahalo, Sumo

GoLite Shangri-La 6+ Shelter 6-8 Person 4-Season

February 10, 2009

Chris,The center height with the GoLite poles is 73 inches. This can vary depending on how you set the shelter up. Instead of the GoLite poles you can substitute for trekking poles or anything similar to one. Check out http://cache.backpackinglight.com/backpackinglight/user_uploads/1214848975_06531.jpgAs for bulkiness, this shelter weighs in at what 2-3 person tents weigh, so it provides minimal weight and bulk. It terms of vents, it does not have any. If you are just pitching the shelter condensation shouldn't be as big of an issue because there will be better air circulation.Just so I am clear, this is a tent that is geared to the ultralite / more experienced enthusiasts. Based off your questions I think there are a lot of other free standing (easier to setup) tents available. Good luck and post up any more questions you may have about this shelter.Mahalo, Sumo

The outside of almost all boots come with a treatment from the tannery that is water repellent. Because I'm very particular I always put an additional coat of a full grain leather boot treatment (you don't have to clean your boots when they are new). You could use this Nikwax product from BC http://www.backcountry.com/store/NIK0046/Nikwax-Fabric-Leather-Spray-Footwear-Treatment.html?or http://www.grangers.co.uk/productview.cfm?id=14Mahalo, Sumo

Montrail Blue Ridge GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

February 9, 2009

Ken,The Blueridge has a very very stiff sole. If you prefer something that isn't going to give underneath the weight of you and your pack then this is definitely a good boot to look at. As for it being too warm in the summer, I don't think it would be. The tongue has a little more cushioning then the Torre. Basically the temperature will run comparable to any full grain leather gortex lined boot. If anything I would say it will run cold in the winter. Mahalo, Sumo

AKU Spider Kevlar GTX Boot - Men's

February 9, 2009

Jonathon,I'm sure you have experienced difficulty in finding extra wide shoes in casual styles. For mountaineering boots it is close to impossible. My best advice is to get a pair of plastic boots from Koflach. The shells come in whole sizes while the liners come in half sizes. If you know someone at a good ski shop they should know how to heat the plastic and shape it out. The downside is you won't have a warranty for your new boots. Other then that I do not know how you are going to find a comfortable extra wide insulated boot. Hope that gives you a starting point.Mahalo, Sumo

Salomon XT Wings Trail Running Shoe - Women's

February 7, 2009

Penny,When looking through the item description and Tech Specs it will usually say GTX or Gortex if the shoe has that particular waterproof membrane. Take a look at the trail shoes at http://www.backcountry.com/store/group/169/Womens-Trail-Run-Shoes.html and it should be easier to spot which shoes have GTX. I have had a good experience with the men's version of the Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX Trail Running shoe http://www.backcountry.com/store/SAL1397/Salomon-XA-Pro-3D-Ultra-GTX-Trail-Running-Shoe-Womens.html. Merrell Outland Mid GTX Boot - Men's

February 4, 2009

Ed,This shoe is going to be comfortable and work for the average person in average conditions. I would look at a boot that is more rugged and stiff. Look at the backpacking boot section for more appropriate options. Most boots in there will have a synthetic shank that adds stiffness to the boot. When you are wearing 100+ lbs on your back with a lighter weight boot it will bend and twist over every protruding rock. Keep in mind full grain leather boots will be less breathable then mesh boots, but will show less wear. Compared to standard issue boots, almost any backpacking boot will be more breathable. Bottom line: check out http://www.backcountry.com/store/ASO0014/Asolo-Power-Matic-200-GV-Backpacking-Boot-Mens.html it can do everything you will be doing in the military.Mahalo, Sumo

Robert,This boot has great traction, about 6" high, and will keep your foot dry. In terms of wearing it in the snow is really subjective. If you are in a really cold climate nothing will replace a winter boot. If you just have a little snow order 1 size up (this boot runs a little small) and get a heavy weight sock to wear with it. Hello,A lot of the features are pretty similar technically. Main differences are the heel on the ultra. Do you see the colored dots along the heel? These are suppose to absorb more shock and squish out while running (they do not go out that much). Also, the forefoot is more rigid. With a lot of shoes it is half marketing half truth. Can say I know a lot of people who tried to save money with XA Comp 2 that later upgraded to the Pro 3D. Go with the Pro 3D it is a superior and more comfortable shoe.Mahalo, Sumo

Alpha: pocket on left bicep, 2 internal pockets, 2 chest pockets, Laminated quick dry chin guard,Theta: stowable hood, 1 internal pocket, 2 chest pockets + 2 hand pockets, Based off your size and weight I would recommend a L (I am not that confident with my sizing suggestion YMMV). The North Face Vindicator Mid GTX Boot - Men's

January 30, 2009

Dave Dean,I am familiar with the Adrenaline you have been using. Compared to the Vindicator they are pretty similar in styling and with features.Waterproofing: Both have Gortex Lacing: This style has tabs instead of eyelets. You will not notice a difference in this category. Insole: The Vindicator uses what TNF calls Norhodic footbed. It should be the same one you have in your Adrenaline. Take a look at http://www2.thenorthface.com/ap/technologies/technologies-FO18.htmlSole: Uses a more aggressive (larger lugs) Vibram sole. If anything I see this as an upgrade.Shank: Both shoes have a synthetic shank for added rigidity.Fit: I have not tried the Vindicator on. From pictures it does look more rugged all the way around. Possible a little wider and higher volume. Bottom line: It looks very similar and the Adrenaline sounds like it worked very well for you. Pick up a pair, try them out, and post a review.Mahalo, Sumo

Salomon Scrambler FG TS Winter Boot - Men's

January 30, 2009

Doug Crofts,Fitting winter boots is a difficult and timely process. The good thing is once you find a boot that works it is worth it's weight in gold. What boots have you tried so far? Both the Salomon Scrambler or The North Face Four Shadows would be a great option for you. Because you have been experiencing rubbing on the shin I would avoid the Ice Storm, it uses the BOA lacing system. When lacing the boots you will want it snug through the forefoot, this will lock your heal in place. At the top it should be more relaxed allowing the shin to flex forward while walking. Bottom line: without seeing your foot I would go with the Four Shadows boot. When lacing them tie a surgeons knot between eyelets 2&3 and 3&4. There are a lot of sites that show how to tie a surgeons knot if you have not seen it done before. If you have any follow up questions please let me know.Mahalo, Sumo

Dansko Professional Oiled Clog - Women's

January 30, 2009

Ana,The construction and fit between the two models is going to be identical. The difference is in the material of the uppers. The Pull-up has a nice full grain leather with a subtle shine. It will look professional and be is easy to maintain. The oiled is exactly that, an oiled leather. All leathers are naturally hydrophobic (water resistant) when you add oil to the leather it just makes it more so. Dankso describes this as more a rugged ready for the out door type shoe. With the oiled shoe scratches, will appear in a lighter color. These can be rubbed out fairly easy though.Bottom line: oiled would best if you wear khakis or jeans, let's call this the weekend or business casual clog. Columbia Dragonfly Shoe - Women's

January 30, 2009

Shirley,Prior to your post and looking into it, I did not know anything about aqua fitness. I noticed most people don't wear shoes when doing activities in the pool. At the same time I found numerous sites selling shoes for aqua fitness activities. Does your class or instruct recommend wearing shoes in the pool? Most shoes you wear in the water are going to feel clunky and restrictive. Have you looked into water weights for your ankles to get a better workout? Anyways, these shoes will work great as a shoe you wear to the pool and in the shower room. If you wear these in the pool the chlorine will wear out the materials prematurely. Also, look at http://www.backcountry.com/store/group/170/Womens-Water-Shoes.html which has water specific shoes and sandals. Everything on the water shoe page will be a lot more open. Good luck with water aerobics! Now I know what water aerobics consist of.Mahalo, Sumo

Black Diamond Focus Speed Adjust Harness - Men's

January 29, 2009

Byron,As far as I can tell the harnesses are very similar. Both harnesses have 4 gear loops, adjustable leg loops, and a haul loop. The Momentum series was recently updated. With this update the Momentum Speed is not in the most recent BD catalogs, although still listed on their website. The Focus SA uses what BD calls SoftEdge. Basically it is able to match the curvature of body better. More surface area = better weight distribution = more comfortable to hang in. Also should hold it's shape better. The other difference is auto double backing buckles, that also come fully undone. This is a great feature because you can put the harness on and tighten it without dealing with feeding webbing through the other buckles eyelit. This will save you a lot of time in the long run! Here are some blown up photos of the Focus SA http://blkdia.bdel.com/marketing/CURRENT_products_hires_jpegs/651026%20Focus%20SA%20Clay.jpgI couldn't find a better photo of the Momentum Speed, so I put the Momentum SA for comparison purposes http://blkdia.bdel.com/marketing/CURRENT_products_hires_jpegs/651023%20Momentum%20AL%20Slate%20frnt.jpg It was difficult for me to tell and hard to find any information, perhaps someone else will chime in.Mahalo, Sumo
