Good Poles

Black Diamond Syncline Trekking Pole

Black Diamond Syncline Trekking Pole

Rating for this product: 5 1 day ago

I don't normally ever use poles but I bought these for a hike through water and they worked great for keeping balance on wet rocks. I'm 5'11 165 pounds and one pole could just about support all my weight. If you're any taller they will start to bend a lot. I never had any problem with the lock slipping. The only downside is that you can't shorten them into a very compact size when you don't need them.

Good water shoes

Merrell WaterPro Manistee Shoe - Men's

Merrell WaterPro Manistee Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 1 day ago

Pros:
lightweight
good (not great) grip on wet rocks
dry quickly

Cons:
After a 9 mile trip the tops of my little toes were red and raw from rubbing against the mesh above the toebox. Maybe my foot is just oddly shaped.

Outdoor Research DryComp Ridge Sack

Outdoor Research DryComp Ridge Sack

Rating for this product: 4 1 day ago

I took this on a 9 mile trip through the Subway in Zion to keep my camera dry. Though this pack feels flimsy, I was able to strap my 3 pound tripod and 40oz water bottle to back and my 5 pound camera and lens inside.

Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 Ultra Light Tent: 1-Person 3-Season

Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 Ultra Light Tent: 1-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 May 16, 2012

I bought this, set it up, then decided to get the UL2. The amount of space between the two sizes is well worth the 4oz penalty for me. This is still an amazing tent, I just wanted the option to bring someone with me, or have my pack inside from the rain and change comfortably. If you really need to shave weight, then this is the tent to get.

SealLine Boundary Dry Pack

Rating for this product: 4 May 16, 2012

I bought this to take on a hike through the Zion Subway and Narrows and keep my camera safe. I haven't actually tried this out, but the material feels like it can take a beating.
I decided to go with http://www.backcountry.com/outdoor-research-drycomp-ridge-sack so that I can strap my tripod to the back and keep water easily accessible.

ProBar Art's Original Superfruit Slam Bar - 12-Pack

Rating for this product: 3 May 14, 2012

Superfruit Slam is an apt description for these. They have all the hunger-ending qualities of other ProBars, but they were too sweet for me. It had a syrupy-sweet flavor that made my mouth dry. They're good, but I prefer the other varieties more.

Should have stocked up on last year's model

Columbia Silver Ridge Cargo Short - Men's

Columbia Silver Ridge Cargo Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 May 7, 2012

I loved last year's version of these shorts and I wish I had bought more than 2 pair. The material on these feels more abrasive and they removed the "hidden" zip pocket. The sizing has changed a lot as well. I had a 32 in last year's and they fit comfortably. Without gaining any weight, I now need a 34 and the thighs are still tight.

Best Metal Bottle

Hydro Flask 21oz. Standard Mouth Water Bottle

Hydro Flask 21oz. Standard Mouth Water Bottle

Rating for this product: 5 May 6, 2012

I've loved and used my 40oz Klean Kanteen for years, but this one is so much better. I could always tell how cold my water was inside because the bottle would be cold or sweaty, but it doesn't work that way with this Hydro Flask. I was shocked to feel how cold my water was hours after putting it in the bottle, while the outside felt dry and room temperature. The painted texture on the outside is also nice because it makes the bottle easier to grip.
A nice bonus is that you can choose which charity to donate 5% of the price to.

Barefoot Running

New Balance MT00 Minimus Trail Running Shoe - Men's

New Balance MT00 Minimus Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 5, 2012

If you want to get into barefoot running but want to keep glass out of your feet, then this is the shoe for you. I only gave it 4 stars because the material above the toe is kind of stiff and bends funny. I can't wear these without socks because that material gives some bad friction against the hair on the top of my feet. (no I'm not a hobbit)

The sole of the shoe has gaps, so if you run through a puddle you'll get the bottom of your foot wet.

Good Night

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Rectangular

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Rectangular

Rating for this product: 5 April 4, 2012

I have this one and the regular air-core pad and they both let you get a good night's sleep in the backcountry. The packed size for this one is a bit larger than the uninsulated one and the weight feels heavier, but I haven't used a scale on it yet.
I haven't put this to the test in colder weather so I can't speak for how much the insulation helps.
If you're mostly summer camping then I'd recommend the non-insulated version so that you save on $, pack size, and maybe weight.

Merino wool is the best material for baselayers and these things prove it. They kept me warm while standing outside in 30 degree weather with 40mph winds and sleet during a photo shoot. When I had to go indoors, they were sweltering, so be sure and make sure you're wearing these for only outdoor excursions.

Stoic LTWT Sleeping Pad - Short

Rating for this product: 2 July 25, 2011

I tried this out after coming from my Big Agnes full size pad, and my experience was not good. It doesn't inflate very thick, but the small amount of air it does hold seems to hold through the night. It was just a small layer of cushion which was only a slight improvement over the ground.
I'm not sure how this works but my full size Big Agnes packs down smaller than this.

Rating for this product: 3 July 8, 2011

This seems to be made out of the same material as the tent, which is really lightweight. For a footprint, I was looking for something a little more sturdy to protect the bottom of my tent. $54 is too much for a sheet of material, but it's probably a good idea to get it anyways.

Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 July 8, 2011

This is really lightweight and easy to setup. The material feels weak, but what do you expect for a 2lb tent? As others have said, you really need to stake it out to get the maximum floor area because there are only 3 poles.

I took it on a short trip and it will fit two 5'11 people with a large pack in the foot area and a small pack at the head. I'm really impressed with this tent.

Platypus Big Zip SL Hydration Bladder

Platypus Big Zip SL Hydration Bladder

Rating for this product: 5 April 13, 2011

I upgraded to this from using my water bottle in a side holster in my pack and the improvement is amazing. I put the bladder in an outside pocket on my camera backpack, and the hose is still long enough to reach easily to the holder on my shoulder straps. It's so much faster to take water breaks without stopping or even using hands. I haven't had any problems with leaks from the bag, hose, or mouthpiece. I've used this for 8 months and didn't even realize it had a shutoff at the mouthpiece because it's never leaked, even in the open position.

Black Diamond Storm Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 April 13, 2011

I upgraded from the Gizmo and I'm really impressed with this headlamp. It says it can illuminate up to 230ft and I believe it. The incident light from the main beam lights everything around you really well. The dimmer switch is really nice so you can read or not burn your friends' retinas.

It feels quite a bit heavier than the Gizmo but it's only 2 ounces that I think are worth it.

Icebreaker Multisport Lite Mini Sock - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 13, 2011

I tried out some Icebreaker hiking and running socks and they worked great, and these are no exception. Merino wool is some kind of magical delicious fiber. I'm normally not aware of my feet touching my socks or shoes unless they're uncomfortable, but these let me constantly know that my toes are in a perfect-temperature foot womb. I know they're made for the summer but my feet felt fine in a 45 degree ride without shoe covers.

I'm currently stress-testing these and they're holding up great. After two days of wear they haven't stretched out and become loose like other socks, nor do they smell awful after biking 40 miles in them. Temperatures in the morning have been high 30's and afternoon temps have been 60's and my wimpy toes have felt great in both temps.
