My adrenaline starts to flow around 5:30AM. The best part of the day is before the rest of the world has woken up and the rawness of nature is still living from the night hours. I enjoy the early morning training workout or laps on a peak or piece of single track. These are the most opportune times to run into creatures above us in the food chain. Exciting, exhilarating, story worthy.

Dynafit TLT Vertical ST Alpine Touring Binding

September 8, 2011

Pumalogy, you are correct with the toe release when climbing if you don't pull the toe lock lever up all the way to the top. You will inadvertently kick the inside ski off every time you switch back the ski. Make sure you pull the toe lever up through the full range of clicks and this will a a-leave your pain. I have been touring with various models of the Dynafit for a decade and this is the solution on every binding they make. Good Luck.

Little Fire Light

Primus MicronLantern w/ Self Igniter

Primus MicronLantern w/ Self Igniter

Rating for this product: 5 September 7, 2011

I have had this little lantern on day packs, multi-day traverses at elevation, and car camping. This little bugger never let's me down. Well except for the starter, which I simple choose not to use. It always provides about 45W of bright light quickly in some pretty hospitable conditions and tends to be really economical on fuel usage. The brightness is adjustable from a full entertainment table of light to a small reading level light. Tough as well, just bring some extra mantles and she's running trouble free.

Whisperlite always Reliable

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

Rating for this product: 5 September 7, 2011

This has been a reliable stove for me for a decade of packing and trekking. The whisperlite is quiet and has an adjustable flame. I often use the foil shield to keep the fuel economy at its highest by protecting the flame from the wind.
When priming the bowl be aware of how much fuel you had emptied into it before you add spark, you can have quite the little flame burst if your not paying attention (think nylon melting flair). I have run this stove through any fuel I have come across while traveling and she keeps making hot food.
At higher elevations this stove is a must and kicks my canisters stove arse where I cannot get a full canister to burn and burns weakly. At elevation the whisperlite rules. A couple of large bottles and you can cook for a week.

Light Weight, Good Fit

Nathan HPL #020 Race Vest

Nathan HPL #020 Race Vest

Rating for this product: 5 April 8, 2011

Nathan makes some of the best endurance packs out there. They are light and tuff. When I picked up my first pack (Nathan 020 and carries 70 fl oz of liquid) I was worried about the construction of the pack as it appears that it won't take the beating of all day riding/racing. I used the pack all fall on long rides and raced with it this winter without flaw. The pack still feels and looks new. Excellent front stash pockets making gels and electrolyte accessibility easy. The pack is kind of like a fishing vest that is fit for your body with the adjustment straps to cinch down the play in the pack. The pack sits nice and snug without any play or sway. The Synergy pack is a bit big for most of my endeavors but built for the trail. If you are looking for a smaller tighter pack look at the Nathan 020 and 008. The 020 is a smidge bigger than the 008. These are perfect for 6 hour rides/tours/crust cruising and races. Ride On.
