I fell for outdoor many years ago. Any time I think of the beauty, simplicity and serenity waiting to be explored and experienced out there, my heart becomes itchy and only the views in my own eyes can scratch it.

Sharp n heavy

SOG Knives Fixation Bowie Knife

SOG Knives Fixation Bowie Knife

Rating for this product: 5 January 5, 2012

This isn't your regular pocket knife. It's big n heavy n sharp, and gets the job done quicker. I used it for cutting beef, fish, hammering tent pegs, blazing through thick bush once in a while. And if I ever encounter a bear, I'd prefer the knife over a spray any time - it will at least leave a few deep marks on the bear.

Biggest bang for your bucks!

Stoic Templum 2 Tent - 3-Season w/ Footprint and Gear Loft

Rating for this product: 5 August 8, 2011

It may not be the best tent, but considering the price I got at SAC (for about $100), it's the best value you can get! Especially when the tent comes with footprint, which is worth another 30-40 bucks. I used to buy a tarp, it's cheap but bulky and heavy. So far I didn't find another one with a better value (with same quality) yet.

We camped for 7 days in the past 3 weeks. There's one night we had down pour for the whole night, and we stayed bone dry inside.

The size is perfect for 2. My girlfriend and I are both at 5'7 and under 150 lbs. It would be a squeeze if both persons are big, then you may need a 3-person tent. Otherwise this would work just fine.

A few minor flaws: one is the storage pockets inside. It's triangle shaped and my stuff tends to slide out from the bottom of the pocket. Another one is the vestibule. It's really low and if you reach for the zipper to open it in the morning, it's very hard not to get your back wet from the condensation underneath the rain fly. But not a deal breaker to me anyway.

Overall I'd give it a 5-star considering the value I got!

Great tent but on the heavier side

Mountain Hardwear LightWedge 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 March 28, 2011

I haven't tested the tent in the field yet. Just set it up on the beach and see how it's like. It's really easy to set up, very light and solid poles, vestibule has decent room for a cooler and 2 packs. I don't think there's any problem if I need to cook under it. Quite a few mesh pockets inside the tent, and an "attic" pocket with plenty of room for small stuff. Overall a decent quality tent.

The floor space is quite a squeeze for 3 though. For 2 it's comfy. And my gf and I are small, both around 5'7. I'm under 150 pds. I can't imagine to put another person in the tent unless it's a kid. Also the weight is over 7 pds when fully packed. It's ok for 2 to share the load.

Also it seemed to me that there's at least 1 guyline missing from the package. The anchor on the rain fly indicates more guylines.

Great versatile day pack!

Osprey Packs Stratos 34 Backpack - 2000-2200cu in

Rating for this product: 5 February 18, 2011

Pros:
- AirSpeed vent is the best! I never had any other packs works like this one.
- Contour fits so snuggly that I still want to carry it at home.
- Trekking pole straps are very convenient. With other packs, I had to take my pack off first and put poles into side straps, with this one I can easily secure the poles while walking.
- Very versatile. The compression straps on top can be loosened and clip into opposite side. Compression straps at bottom can be loosened and put in sleeping pads.

Cons:
- Somehow all the zippers on the pack are hard to unzip with one hand, even with the pockets on belt.
- Side pockets for water bottle are impossible to reach without taking off the pack (at least taking off one should strap). It could be better designed.
- There should be small hook or strap or something in the hydration pocket to hold bladder in place. My bladder will simply "sink" to the bottom.

Overall speaking it's a great multi-function pack. With the hydration pocket this pack is almost one-pack-for-all!

Cushion you need on the trail

Lorpen Merino Light Hiker Crew Sock - 2-Pack

Lorpen Merino Light Hiker Crew Sock - 2-Pack

Rating for this product: 5 February 15, 2011

The best price to quality ratio hiking socks. The thickened bottom layer adds much cozy feeling to my feet, and it wicks moisture away nice and quick. I had a 4 hour intense hiking on a mountain as soon as I got this and my feet feels quite dry even though I know they've sweat a lot. I've also machine washed and dried and no shrinkage problem whatsoever.

The North Face Resolve Jacket - Men's

February 15, 2011

I'm 5'7 and 144, and I wear a medium. I tried S first and it's really a perfect fit, which leaves no room for another layer (had my base layer and the jacket). If you want it more fashion fit, get S. If you want it more versatile, get a M.
