NEMO Equipment Inc. Meta 2p Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

February 12, 2011

On the Nemo website, it lists the Meta 2p as 4-Season Backpacking but it's listed here as a 3-Season tent. Which is it?

NEMO Equipment Inc. Losi 3P Tent: 3-Person 3-Season

January 25, 2011

I can't speak to the issue of Nemo coming out with a new version but I'll try and help you on the other two.

First, as far as space goes, with 50sq feet you'll plenty of room for 2 people and 2 dogs in a Losi 3P.

As for the tent not being covered by the fly, I don't know what you mean. The fly completely covers the tent although on the sides it does cut it close. But, the fly does dip below the mesh even if only a couple inches. It provides more than adequate protection in a total downpour and plenty of ventilation for nights that are humid.

I can't recommend this tent enough especially with the space to weight ratio. Hope this helps.

Great hot water bottle

MSR Dromedary Bags

MSR Dromedary Bags

Rating for this product: 5 January 23, 2011

Just recently got a 2L and love it. You know it carries water and collapses down when empty so we'll leave that there.

My favorite use so far has been to fill it with boiling water to warm my feet or hold it on my chest. BEWARE though not to put it next to exposed skin until it's had the chance to cool down a bit. A couple weeks ago, I went winter camping in about 8 inches of snow and my leather boots were frozen by morning from the 13F low. During breakfast, I poured boiling water in my Drom bag and put it on my feet. The boots thawed out and dried while I ate breakfast.

I also love to drop it in the bottom of my sleeping bag on really cold nights (again, with a pair of socks on). The thing stays piping hot for hours and doesn't leak.

I haven't used it as a hydro system yet but the little flip valve is easy/perfect for drinking during rest stops.

I'm thinking of ditching my Nalgenes and just going with these because they're so versatile.

Ok Bag... Just ok.

Mountain Hardwear Lamina 0 Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Synthetic

Mountain Hardwear Lamina 0 Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 2 January 23, 2011

I'll admit that I have an older model than the one pictured here. I bought mine about 2 years ago. So keep that in mind with this review.

I really want to love this bag. Well, I really do love this bag... that is to say while I'm sitting around the house on chilly nights. It's comfy enough but...

This thing loses it's loft rather quickly even when stored correctly. I took it up Rainier in July when temps never got down below 22F. I wore my softshell pants, baselayer top and fleece while I slept. I was comfortable but not super toasty.

A couple weeks ago, I took it out for some winter camping and the low got down to 13F and I froze my rear off. Couldn't sleep at all and spent the night shivering and tossing/turning even with 2 thick pairs of socks, baselayer top/bottom, softshell pants, and fleece top.

The drawstring at the top works well enough and cinches down.
The zipper gets caught quite often though.
I do love the little pocket at the top. Comes in handy so you don't lose earplugs.
I'm almost 6'1" and I have a long which is roomy enough to put boot liners in the bottom to dry out during the night.
It collapses down decently enough for a synthetic bag and isn't too heavy for the price.

Overall, I wouldn't buy this again. I'll be upgrading to a 800 down bag next anyway. Maybe I sleep cold but this one makes me want to get a -20F just in case.

Great softshell!

Marmot ROM Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 23, 2011

This thing breathes incredibly well especially for not having pit-zips which makes it lighter. It offers some warmth but definitely is to be used as a layering system on colder days.

I'm almost 6'1" and weigh 220 and have a large (that's me on the right). It fits snug and streamlined but I can still wear a powerfleece underneath along with baselayer of course.

The hood works well with a helmet but you don't feel like it swallows you without one.

Great climbing jacket as you don't feel it ride up when you're reaching higher with an ax or for a hold. It's also a short cut to accommodate a harness but not too short.

The Windstopper material is a plus and comes in real handy when storms start to kick up.

In short, I love this jacket and look forward to it serving me well for years to come.

Great poles!

LEKI Corklite Aergon Speed Lock Trekking Poles - 1-Pair

Rating for this product: 5 January 23, 2011

These poles are great for trail hiking or for approaches on bigger mountains. Super lightweight and very collapsible. They're very durable as well. I was hiking one day and lost my footing. Stepped on the lower skinnier part of the pole and literally watched it bend under my weight and then pop back. I thought I had ruined the pole and it would have snapped or at least had a bad bend but it didn't.

I love the knob on the top and find myself collapsing these down shorter and using them as walking canes more than up high. Very versatile.

Worth the money for sure.

Perfect for hiking

Outdoor Research Flex-Tex Gaiter

Outdoor Research Flex-Tex Gaiter

Rating for this product: 5 January 23, 2011

I have an older model of the Flex-Tex Gaiters by OR that come with a tied cord instead of a strap and I still love them. These only seem even better. I love the stretchy material that fits snug but not tight around the lower calf. I was worried that these might snag and run with lower thorns or bushes but haven't had an issue at all. I used these for hiking in all but the worst wet/snow weather but I did see one of our guides go up Rainier wearing these instead of the beefier Crocs so you know you can't go wrong.

Snug and secure

Outdoor Research Crocodiles Gaiter - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 23, 2011

These gaiters are great in the snow. They keep your pants dry and keep everything out of your boots that you don't want. They fit snug and secure and also work with thicker laces that come on double plastic mountaineering boots.

My only issue was that the seem split where the velcro strip meets the cordura (I had a older version). It started fraying and the cordura slipped away. They still worked fine but that's not what you want. OR is replacing them no questioned asked. Great company and customer service.

UPDATE: Less than a week after sending my old Crocs in, the brand news ones arrived today and I must say that these seem more solidly constructed than my last pair which was an older version. Kudos to OR for taking care of their customers.

Extremely durable and comfortable

Marmot Scree Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 23, 2011

Love these pants. Very stretchy and comfortable. Didn't take them off once including sleeping for three days on Rainier. I went glissading from Muir down in them. At first, I tried a garbage bag for protection but it proved clumsy and I was too tired or lazy to pull out my hardshells. So, I said forget it and just went down on the softshell Screes. It was cold on my butt for sure and while sliding I was worried the whole time that I was wearing them out or they would get snags or runs. To my delight when I got down, couldn't even tell I'd been sliding on ice for what was literally a couple miles on my rear.

My only complaint is that the elastic waistband is reeeeally stretchy but that just could be that I have a size a little big. This can be solved as they do come with belt loops so all is good.

Perfect Hardshell!

Marmot Nano Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 23, 2011

Here's the deal, you only pull out your hardshell if you have precip so bad that your softshell won't cut it or you just want an extra thin layer. Otherwise, it stays in your pack so... you want the lightest hardshell that will do the job. And believe me, the Nano does the job. Took it up Rainier and used it as an additional wind barrier or for a little extra warmth during breaks.I also use this thing around town when it's raining badly and I've never had a leak. Always stay bone dry. As for it not having pitzips, I've never overheated in this thing and the pocket vents do work.In short, it's light, keeps you dry, and is great on the mountain or in the city during summer rains.BTW, I know the pic is gross (caked on sunscreen) and it was bright and sunny but... we were doing crevasse rescue training and I knew I'd be down there for a while (20 minutes) so I threw on the Nano instead of the overkill puffy. Love this jacket!

Marmot Ama Dablam Down Jacket - Men's

January 23, 2011

Trevor,
I was up Rainier last July. I wore this jacket with a Marmot ROM as my softshell and Marmot Nano as my hardshell. We never encountered weather that my softshell couldn't handle although we did have drizzle and 1.5" of snow the first night. I always wore my Nano over my ROM but underneath my Ama Dablam. The Nano is an incredible jacket and does fit over the Ama Dablam if need be. The hoods fit nicely but it is a bit snug in the armpits. It will zip up and could be used over if you had to.

I can't imagine you climbing in the Ama Dablam except for the very last stretch. We had 40mph winds up top so it was necessary. If you had precip that required a hardshell you'd probably not be using the puffy anyway because you'd be climbing or in your tent.

BTW... I'm almost 6'1", 220 lbs, and have a large ROM, XL Nano, and XL Ama Dablam and they all made a perfect layering system along with a power fleece from Marmot as well.

All the best on your climb!

Leaky Mouthpiece

Platypus Hoser Hydration Bladder

Platypus Hoser Hydration Bladder

Rating for this product: 2 January 23, 2011

Judging by all the good reviews on here, I may have just gotten a lemon but my experience has been less that satisfactory. I do like the durability and weight of this product and yes, it does not flavor the water in any way. But, the mouthpiece is so leaky I can't use it anymore. I haven't even had it that long really and can say that I've used it under 15x. The mouthpiece leaks all over everything while driving to the trail and then all down my pack straps and shirts while I'm out there. The only way to stop it is to suck the thing dry and take huge gulps. Again, I may have just gotten a bad one but I hate this thing.

Super toasty especially for the weight

Marmot Ama Dablam Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 18, 2011

I love this jacket. Took it up Rainier this past July. Super toasty and weighs nothing. Cut to fit over layers. I had base, fleece, softshell, and hardshell all underneath. But it's not huge when I wanna just wear it out in the city. Do yourself a favor and get this jacket.

Incredible space for the weight

NEMO Equipment Inc. Losi 3P Tent: 3-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2011

I love this tent! It's easy to set up. I did it by myself in about 10 minutes (in my living room). I already had the footprint attached and packed. It packs small. The "Jake's foot" ball and socket system is unique and a snap to use. The vestibules add plenty of space for packs/boots. It has reflective guy-lines for locking the tent down if need be. As in the description, the side-walls are nearly vertical.

I will say that it is definitely a three-season tent. We rarely get snow down here in Alabama much less 8 inches and so last week when we had quite the storm, I took the opportunity to do a little winter camping. I have a 0-degree bag and so I thought I'd be fine. The temp got down to low teens (much lower than on Rainier in the summer). It was quite cold but not the Losi's fault.

When I get a four-season tent, I'll be getting the Losi Storm 2P as I'm sold on this brand and design.
