good boots

Columbia Bugaboot Omni-Heat Boot - Men's

Columbia Bugaboot Omni-Heat Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 2, 2011

I bought these boots because I wanted something warm to wear outside for work in the winter and they were on sale for a pretty good price becasue they were last years model. I normally wear a size 12 and I wanted to wear thick socks with them. So I ordered a size 12 and I have been wearing them with a thick wool sock and a sock liner and they are very comfortable. I have had them out in -10 F temps and they are pretty warm as long as you keep walking. If I stand for about 30 minutes then my toes will start to get cold and I will need to walk for about 15 more minutes to warm them up again. I dont think that they are the worlds warmest boot but they are comfortable for a lot of walking and they have good traction when walking on snow and ice. I ended up buying a second pair to have on hand when these wear out. I have worn them for a month every day and so far they are wearing very well.

Great Coat

Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero Down Parka - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero Down Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 2, 2011

I have been wearing the Absolute Zero Parka for about 1 month now and I really love it. I wear it outside for work and I have had it out in -10 F with strong wind and it was still very warm even though I was out for more than 1 hour. If you have the hood up and your back to the wind you dont even know that you are outside. If you have to face the wind or walk into the wind then you can just pull the zipper all of the way up and it will go up over your nose to keep your whole face warm. I have also worn it up to about 20 F and it is not too warm. If you get warm you can just pull the zipper half way down and control your comfort that way. The pockets are extremely warm also. I normally wear the black/white Hestra Heli 3 finger gloves with this coat and they are ok when you are walking but if I stand around for a while then I find that it is warmer to just put my hands in the pockets. I expect to have it out in -30 to -40 F degree conditions this winter and from what I know so far I expect that it will still keep me plenty warm.

the size does seem to run a little big. I am 6'2" and 240 lbs and I ordered the XL. It is perfect for me. I can wear several layers under it and the coat is still plenty loose to move around in. I do not wear it in the car though, I think that it would be too bulky and warm to wear in a warm car. So I just keep it at my office and put it on when I need to spend more than a few minutes outside.

Great Gloves

Hestra Heli 3-Finger Glove

Hestra Heli 3-Finger Glove

Rating for this product: 5 January 2, 2011

I have been wearing these gloves for about a month now in temperatures down to about -10 F. My job involves a lot of walking around outside so I was looking for something warm and still functional. I found that these gloves are ok for handling big tools or operating the zipper on my coat but they are still too bulky to use for things such as operating a camera (no surprise though). They are very warm when walking but when standing around at 0 or -10 F my fingers will get cold after 30 minutes or so. I really like the wrist straps, I can pull off the gloves if I need to reach in my pocket or pick up something small and then I dont have to worry about dropping them. I just ordered the Outdoor Research Alti mitts to use when I need to do a lot of standing around outside but I will still wear the Hestra Heli's when I plan to be active while outside.

I got the black/white gloves and they look really good with my black coat. I put on the leather conditioner that came with the gloves and the white darkened up a little but not much. They seem to be very well made and I expect them to last for several years.
