Water, wind, and puke proof.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 14, 2005

This is a great technical jacket that happens to be tres functional in the city. It doesn't fit as close as the Gamma SV, and I'm able to wear a heavy fleece underneath; and that's a great combo for cold weather. It's close to being totally H2Oproof, blocks wind, and has repelled baby puke (don't ask). It's really good for climbing as well as holding onto subway handrails. As such, the sleeves are cut longer, and the wrist closures are pretty tight (you won't be rolling up the sleeves). Plus, it's a smart-looking jacket.

Difference between the SV and the MX? The MX is warmer, but the SV repels H20 better. Also, the men's version has blue-greyish colored pockets; the all black version is for women.

Warm, dry, and excellent traction in the snow

The North Face Baltoro HV 400 Boot - Men's

The North Face Baltoro HV 400 Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 4, 2005

These TNF boots is great for all snow-bound activities. Very comfortable and flexible. They keep your feet warm and dry; and they wick loads better than Sorels. I'm not sure whether the heat retaining/releasing footbed is just a gimmick, but I was good in -30C conditions. The grip is excellent on all types of snow and very good in icy conditions. However, when the soles are wet, they are a bit slick on smooth, indoor surfaces. These would work in the city, but the soles are soft rubber and will quickly wear down on dry pavement. Also, they may be too warm for urban wear, especially if you spend time indoors. Buy at least 1/2 size larger. Overall, great snow boots

Excellent fleece

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 3, 2005

The high-loft fleece does a great job of retaining warmth, especially under a shell. It's not windproof, but I've worn it in -5C weather(light wind and snowfall, hiking) with an Arc'Teryx Gamma SV vest, and it kept me warm. I've worn it under a 650wt down jacket in -30C weather, and I stayed very warm. It's lightweight, and the functional sleeves are great. It won't shed water, but I've worn it in light snowfalls and stayed warm; and it dries quickly. I prefer the lack of windproofing during physical activities, particularly as the MHW can get hot. For what it's worth, the "fuzziness" is pretty cool, and it stands out from other fleeces in terms of aesthetics.
