Slick little bugger

Integral Designs Siltarp3

Integral Designs Siltarp3

Rating for this product: 5 July 21, 2005

The Siltarp 3 is a great tarp with some nice features. The loops every two feet make for a very easy setup. The quality of construction is first rate. The color we chose was gray, although I must say it's a greenish version of gray.

The only problem with this tarp is the packing. Since silicone impregnated nylon is, well, made with silicone and nylon, it's extremely slippery and folding it and stuffing into the sack is an exercise in frustration. The process goes much quicker with two people, rather than one. If one person is stuffing however, just take a seat and watch the show!

I guess there is no free lunch. It is overpriced in my opinion, but a great tarp with great features.

Great Rain Cover

Kelty Backpack Rain Cover

Kelty Backpack Rain Cover

Rating for this product: 5 March 4, 2005

This is one of those times when the product made by the manufacturer is truly better than the knock-off variety you can buy at REI. Nothing against REI, I've been a member since 1973, but the Kelty rain cover is head and shoulders above the generic Duck's Back cover sold by REI. I tried both and there are subtle differences, but major. Like the fit: no comparison at all. The Kelty fits the pack, the REI was like a giant sack billowing in the wind. Then there were the straps that held the cover on the pack, unlike the REI which used a cinch cord.

If you have a Kelty pack, then get the Kelty rain cover. It DOES make a difference. Plus, it packs up smaller in it's own pocket.
