Day hike with the Seal Line waterproof backpack

Day hike with the Seal Line waterproof backpack

SealLine Urban Backpack

May 25, 2009

This is the small Urban Backpack which is just a bit large for my 7 year old son. The pack is waterproof, and best suited for urban environments (like going to school or work). It worked well on our day hike and easily held two rain coats, a lunch box, and camera. This would be a great pack for carrying a laptop and office work--especially if you find yourself commuting to work in the rain. This is an expensive pack, even for the small version--but it is waterproof and that (for me) is worth the extra cost. The harness is very comfortable and suited for adults, with enough adjustment range to fit a child in the 8-10 year old size range.

Small pack that rocks!

Black Diamond Magnum Backpack - 976cu in

Black Diamond Magnum Backpack - 976cu in

Rating for this product: 5 July 25, 2009

This is a small pack--which fits the bill nicely for day trips and doesn't get in the way whether you are climbing rocks or navigating through crowds. It can snugly hold two water bottles (two excellent elastic mesh pockets on each side), a rain coat (tied on the outside), camera and snacks--not much more. The harness is very comfortable and capable of supporting the load--and pulling it in close so it isn't flopping around throwing off your balance. The cargo area is very accessible and has a zippered inside pocket and another inside pocket.

We liked it so much we bought one for everyone in the family and have taken it on every hiking/canoe/swimming/car trip since. My wife loves it and has taken to leaving her purse at home in favor of this little pack. On our last trip to the waterpark there was enough room for a beach towel and one other item inside, either lunch, spare shirt/socks, or medium size camera bag.

While the pack makes no pretension of being waterproof, it did hold up well in the bottom of the canoe on the last trip. Only the items around the zippers were wet (the outside was muddy and wet). We have used these on short rainy hikes exposed to the downpour, and didn't have issues with our gear getting wet inside after three hours. A couple of more hours and the contents would probably have gotten wet--but we were done before the packs gave out.

Kelty Grommet Backpack - Kids' - 850 cu in DO NOT USE

Bought this last year for my son entering Kindergarten. He is still using it a year later for first grade and it still looks as good as new. Roomy, well-built for many years use.

Child carrier that both parent and child will enjoy

Kelty Kangaroo Kid Carrier

Kelty Kangaroo Kid Carrier

Rating for this product: 5 September 29, 2003

Our family takes 2-3 mile walks several times a week and though we have a stroller, I prefer the Kangaroo carrier and so does our son. We have tried other carriers, but this is the best one we have seen. It has a support harness that distributes the child's weight onto the hips, and away from the back. The feature that makes this carrier stand out from all the rest is the support harness. The Kangaroo is designed for children up to 28 lbs, and we have used it now for well over a year. The design is well thought out. One adult can singlehandedly strap in a squirming child. The child can face in towards the chest, or once the neck is strong enough, face forward. The child support pouch is comfortable and roomy for the child and has pockets for baby items and cold hands. The carrier is great for outdoor trails that are not built for strollers, and it has found use on shopping trips and other family outings year round.
