All of the photos incorrectly show the orientation of the heel piece. It should be rotated 180 degrees as in this photo (two screws in front one in back).

CW-X Insulator Stabilyx Tight - Men's

December 10, 2011

If you are looking for tights to use as a base layer for skiing, I would recommend going with something in 3/4 length. That way you don't have the extra bulk of the tights inside your boot or bunched up around the calf. Might want to look at the CW-X 3/4, Mountain Hardwear Mighty Power 3/4 or a few brands make 3/4 merino.

X10M

Suunto X10 Watch

Suunto X10 Watch

Rating for this product: 4 December 9, 2011

I received an X10M as a replacement for my X9Mi after extended use. The widely reported problem of the bezel separating from the watch seems to finally be resolved.

Battery life is greatly improved in this version and initial acquisition time is also much faster. I use this watch to log my track on trail runs, bike rides, and adventures in the mountains. I rarely lose GPS signal after waiting a few minutes for a good lock before starting out.

The one thing I hoped would change and have wanted since first getting an X9 is the ability to independently set the altimeter recording interval. It is fixed based on GPS recording interval. When I just want to record altitude (GPS off), the resolution of altitude recordings tend to under-report total vertical as I have already transitioned on the summit and started my descent before it ever gets a chance to record a data point at the summit.

Backcountry Access Tracker 2 Avalanche Beacon

December 8, 2011

All beacons are capable of searching for multiple victims. Multiple antennae beacons make the complexity of this scenario much easier. This beacon will tell you if it detects more than one beacon. It does not, however, have the capability to mask a beacon once found. Instead, there is a 'special mode' that narrows the search angle, aiding in multiple burial scenarios.

The weight listed is incorrect. Weights per ski from the manufacturer (g): 1190 | 1290 | 1380 | 1470 for sizes 149 | 158 | 167 | 176. This puts the 176cm at just over 3 lb per ski.

Alp40

Backcountry Access Stash Alp40 Backpack - 2440cu in

Backcountry Access Stash Alp40 Backpack - 2440cu in

Rating for this product: 4 September 13, 2011

Lots of room to fit all the required gear for a day tour or light overnight to a hut. The shovel blade pocket is a great feature as well as the full side sleeve for shovel handle and probe. The daisy chains give lots of options for strapping gear to the pack. The one improvement I would like is a better ice axe attachment system. Even with the daisy chains, I haven't found a good way to attach the axe to the back of the pack. I prefer the way it is done on the BD Revelation.

Search Made Easy

Backcountry Access Tracker 2 Avalanche Beacon

Backcountry Access Tracker 2 Avalanche Beacon

Rating for this product: 4 September 13, 2011

This beacon has a lot going for it and simplifies the search part of the rescue. It has a "Multiple Burial" light the comes on if it detects more than one transmitting beacon. Although you can't completely mask a beacon once found, using the "Special Mode" allows you to reduce the search angle and lock on to the second signal. In the end, what matters most with beacons is becoming comfortable with the one you own and lots of practice.

A longer initial acquisition range is the only improvement I would want.

TLT5

Dynafit TLT 5 Performance TF Alpine Touring Boot

Rating for this product: 4 May 7, 2011

These boots are super versatile. Remove the cuffs, tongue, and the velcro strap and you have a race boot. Put the tongue in and you can easily drive powder skis. The cuff articulation that is achievable in these boots allows for better walking and skinning.

The liners are thinner than traditional thermo-moldable liners. However, I did not notice colder feet as a side effect.

Everything about these boots is done well except the buckles. The upper cuff buckle sticks out when in walk mode. This is fine for mid-winter snow coverage but when walking on trails or boulder fields caution is advised. I have broken one and bent the other one. The lower buckle has a small spring that forces the buckle closed. After some use, the spring will wear through and actually keep the buckle open (when not under tension). This is purely a cosmetic problem as it doesn't hinder the use of the buckle.

MontBell UL Down #5

MontBell U.L. Super Spiral Hugger #5 Down Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree

MontBell U.L. Super Spiral Hugger #5 Down Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree

Rating for this product: 5 May 7, 2011

The quality of this bag is top notch. Very little down has been lost coming through the material. A few pieces worked their way out when stuffing the bag into the stuff sack when new.

The lightweight material seems fragile but I have yet to put a tear in the fabric after two years of use.

The temperature rating of 40F seems to be quite reasonable. Most of my use with this bag has been from spring to fall camping on a Therm-a-Rest Deluxe. If it is too warm, it does have a two-way zipper so you can vent by your feet without your core getting cool. I have used it in air temperatures down to 25F with just a single light layer on (sleeping in a non-heated hut in spring time on a thin mattress). Normally, I would not push the temperature limit of the bag that far if I were camping outside on the ground.

At 16oz and packing down to the size of a 1L Nalgene I hardly notice this in my pack.

The North Face Cipher Windstopper Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 23, 2010

Great jacked that is very durable and versatile. I use it in the fall and spring for rock climbing and in the winter for ski touring. I have rubbed up against sharp rock and the material is no worse for the wear. Note that the gray area of the jacket along the side of the chest and sleeves is not Windstopper material but a more breathable, stretchy fabric.

- Cut off the tip and get some tip loops.

Dynafit Titan TF-X Ski Boot - Men's

July 27, 2010

The weight difference is almost 1lb/boot, 2000g for the Titan vs. 1595g for the Zzero4C. With the heavier weight of the Titan, you get a much beefier boot. The Dynafit lineup goes Zzero4C, Zzeus, Titan from softest to stiffest. Even tho the Zzero4C are the 'softest', they are still a very stiff boot, especially laterally. The Zzeus and Titan are also overlap boots as opposed to the tongue style of the Zzero4C.

I have skied the Zzero4C for 3 seasons and have no complaints. The Dynafit Manaslu is my biggest ski. If you are driving skis wider than 100mm, go with the Titan.

Great softshell gloves

Arc'teryx Hardface Glove - Unisex

Arc'teryx Hardface Glove - Unisex

Rating for this product: 4 July 19, 2010

These gloves are thicker than what I would typically define as a liner. They have a nice soft fleece interior, leather in the high wear areas on the palm and index finger, and seem to be well made. As my hands tend to run a warm, I find them to be a little too warm for spring ski touring, but great mid-winter gloves when the temps are in the 20s. They can withstand snow quite well as long as it is not the heavy, wet stuff.

As others have said, the stitching is raised on the inside. I did not find this uncomfortable or to hinder their effectiveness.

Great Lantern

Black Diamond Apollo Lantern

Black Diamond Apollo Lantern

Rating for this product: 5 July 8, 2010

I have used this lantern around camp from winter camping trips in the mountains to car camping. It is so much more convenient not having to have a headlamp on at all times. I charge up the batteries before a trip and the lantern will easily last 3 or 4 days in the field. It also packs up pretty small.

The set of LEDs to tell you battery life is also handy, it just took me a bit to find it at first. Extend the lantern so just enough so that you can press the power button. The red, yellow, and green LEDs are near the top on the inside cylinder. It would be nice to be able to view the LEDs with the lantern fully extended, but this isn't enough to drop it from 5 stars.

Con: I am questioning the long term durability of this pad as there was mysteriously a small chunk taken out of the pad on its first trip. This may be a fluke as everyone else on the trip has had the same pad for years and are still in good shape.

Suunto X9i

Suunto X9i GPS Watch

Suunto X9i GPS Watch

Rating for this product: 3 February 20, 2009

This watch can do a lot of stuff, so it takes some practice learning all of the functions and menus.

GPS signal acquisition is slow getting locked in initially but then maintains the signal well. Obviously, you can't take it in dense trees and expect the GPS to still work.

The battery will last about 3-4 hours in GPS mode at 1 second update intervals. If you remember to power down the GPS when you don't need it, you can easily extend the battery to last on multi-day trips. I primarily use just the altimeter mode and don't need to recharge the battery for weeks.

The included software is OK for looking at altimeter logs, but not much else. The good thing is that you can export the GPS logs into Google Earth or your topo software.

When I first tried on these pants, I wasn't excited at how they fit. They were a little long in the leg and it seemed like you had to hike up the waist for the proper fit. I decided to give them a try anyway and am now very satisfied with the results. I pulled up the waist to the normal height and took them on a test run. They did not ride up and I had no problems with the fit during the run. They are perfect as an outer layer for high output pursuits in cold weather or as a base layer.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 3, 2008

I have two years of use out of this jacket. Perfect for the fall as an outer layer. My main use for this jacket is while skinning with a single long sleeve layer underneath. At the top, throw on my shell and I'm good to go. This jacket breathes well, is nice and stretchy, and has tons of pockets. It is not waterproof or windproof, same as most soft shells. I have the older version that is made in Canada and the fit is athletic. As for sizing, I'm a medium in the Gamma, but wear a small in the Arc'teryx Matador.

Arc'teryx Matador Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 3, 2008

This jacket is very warm and windproof. The collar is high which I like to keep the wind out. The sizing of this jacket seems to run different than other Arc'teryx. I have a medium Gamma MX, but take a small in the Matador. The storm skirt can tend to ride up as there is no gripping material around the bottom. I bought this jacket for alpine touring, but it is too bulky to slide a shell over and does not pack well. This jacket has been relegated to my daily use winter jacket at which it excels. It would also work very well as a resort jacket, but I spend most of my ski days touring.

The fit around the waist is as advertised, but they seem a little baggy around the legs. Gore-Tex doesn't breath that well so the side vents get plenty of use when skinning. The pocket is awkwardly shaped and all I use it for stashing my camera.

A true Classic

Dynafit TLT Speed Classic Alpine Touring Binding

Dynafit TLT Speed Classic Alpine Touring Binding

Rating for this product: 5 December 1, 2008

Hands down the best touring binding out there! Zero lifted weight in touring mode in an already super light package. These things are super durable and will last season after season with little maintenance. These bindings have a very low stack height creating a rigid connection between boot and ski. The only drawbacks are the limited adjustment range and shorter heel pins than on the Verticals.

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Down Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 1, 2008

I was fortunate enough to win one of these jackets. It is super warm and incredibly light weight. It packs to the size of a water bottle in the included stuff sack and you can get it smaller if you need to. This is always one of the first pieces of gear to go into my touring pack.

Cold weather glove

Black Diamond Guide Glove - Men's

Black Diamond Guide Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

These gloves are on the bulky side, but they make up for it with their warmth. They are perfect when the temp drops below 10F. If the temp is above that, they would be too much glove unless your hands tend to get cold easily. The gauntlet is extra long and does its job keeping the snow out. I set the gauntlet diameter the first time I had them on over my shell and haven't had to adjust them since.

Amazing hardshell

Westcomb Mirage Jacket - Men's

Westcomb Mirage Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 23, 2008

Great jacket with all the features a versatile shell needs. The word is out and I am also a believer in eVent, it is much more breathable than Gore-tex. The fit is spot on and I like that the jacket doesn't come down too low. Only thing missing is the hood is not stow-able. The zipper is offset at the collar, an excellent addition showing the attention to detail.
