Katadyn Hiker Water Microfilter

Katadyn Hiker Water Microfilter

Rating for this product: 5 November 15, 2009

I just wanted to add that if you check McMaster.com, you will find they sell a selection of 3/16 barb fittings that fit nicely into the hose if you need some kind of MacGuyvering, such as part#2808K105. Also, after some varmint ate our hose, I purchased #51845K26 as a replacement.

Princeton Tec Pilot LED Light

Princeton Tec Pilot LED Light

Rating for this product: 4 November 14, 2009

I just got this little light. I didn't think I'd use it for much aside from a backup light. But, in the first week, I set it into a Velcro strap for an impromptu running beacon strapped around my wrist, a light to see the gas pumps when the lights were out in Yosemite and to make my way to my girlfriend's bed without having to turn on the overhead light when I finally got in at 11:30 PM.
It provides sufficient light when I need it, mostly because it's there, strapped to my backpack, when I need it. This light easily attaches to my 1" wide backpack strap, has a hole for a cord and the light disconnects easily from the mounting plate simply, but seems to be very secure.

I used this tent last winter and it set up quickly. Here in the Sierras, I've tried single wall tents, but ended up with a lot of condensation.

Bear Vault BV450 Solo Bear Resistant Food Canister

October 22, 2009

Bears are extremely strong with giant, sharp claws and rip open cars up here in Yosemite Nat'l Park. So, this canister will probably keep out any non-extremely strong animal.

Bear Vault BV450 Solo Bear Resistant Food Canister

October 22, 2009

This bear canister is easy to get into, even in freezing temps. I use a titanium spork, so I use that as a wedge to gently allow the tabs to slide against each other. The older canisters weren't as flexible where the tab is. The newer double tab canisters are a little bit easier to depress. I'd say use anything you like to cheat the tabs, just ensure you aren't damaging the canister.

The North Face Lifty GTX 400 Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 16, 2009

I bought these boots because they were vegan. Vegan winter boots are difficult to find. I hike, snowshoe backpack and I love these boots! But, they were one-half size smaller than my other pair of vegan The North Face boots.

Patagonia Capilene 2 Zip-Neck Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2009

I friggin' love this shirt. It's great as a warm baselayer, nice to sleep in and keeps off the morning mist, chill and dew. It is my go-to for cooler backpacking and hiking trips. The more I use it, the more I appreciate it. Hey, I just realized this shirt is on two different pages. What gives?

Black Diamond Neve Strap Crampons with ABS

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2009

these are excellent for snowy and icy conditions. My favorite use is hiking out of Yosemite Valley when the trail is well trod and slippery as hell. Without these 1 pound crampons, I'm sliding all over the place, and with snowshoes, I'm sliding all over the ice and other people get all butt-hurt for hogging the narrow trails.

MSR Denali Evo Snowshoe Flotation Tails - 6in

MSR Denali Evo Snowshoe Flotation Tails - 6in

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2009

These are a must anytime you head out on your Denali Evos. I throw 'em in my pack and they'll be ready for me to head off-trail to into deeper snow. They are easy for me to attach and detach, even with a full 40lb. pack on my back.

Excellent shoes

MSR Denali Evo Ascent Snowshoe

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2009

I live in Yosemite and face all kinds of wacky California snow conditions. In the winter I also often hike up out of the valley to the rim, about a 3500' ascent. It's not bad, once you get used to it. Anyhoo, I really appreciate these shoes because they are very light, easily maneuverable when you leave the tails off and provide excellent traction on snow and ice. I really appreciate being able to have just the shoes on while I hike on-trial for miles and then, only have to have the tails on for a short time when I go off-trail. Nancy loves 'em too, compare weights on these and leave those tails in the pack!

A good couple's pot

Snow Peak Trek 1400 Titanium Cookset

Rating for this product: 4 July 25, 2009

I've used the 900 for years and I use this one when I have another person with me. This pot is great in terms of weight and ability to clean, but we use it mostly with dehydrated foods. In conjunction with a titanium spork, however, it can be a bit loud when scraping the last of the vegan ChiliMac.

Great cold weather baselayer

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 25, 2009

I have been using this jacket as my cold weather baselayer. The zipper helps in temperature regulation while I'm at camp, in the sack or on the trail. It is less comfortable when in my bag, but it's versatility if a nice trade-off. As it is rain and wind resistant, this works very well for me in the Sierras. I can wake up in it and be shielded from the mild cold, breezes and morning mists. It's good for chilly fogs or while hiking in the clouds. I think it's pretty damn good for a $75 SAC deal, but I would not buy it at $150.

Review Title

Bear Vault BV450 Solo Bear Resistant Food Canister

Rating for this product: 5 July 23, 2009

I've had this canister for about four years of about 25 days per year of backpacking. I've appreciated it immensely. It's clear (which is ginormously great), slightly lighter than the Garcia, less expensive than the Bearikade, it rain-proof and makes a fine seat. I've used the Garcia and I like this one much better. I fit it into the bottom of my packs and it does just fine. I do two and three day trips with a 2700 cu in pack, longer or snow trips in a 3400 cu in pack with this in the bottom. I can fit about four-person-days worth of food and gear in it, so it's good for all of Nancy and my three day trips and under.

Bear Vault BV450 Solo Bear Resistant Food Canister

July 23, 2009

Nancy and I have done several three day backpacking trips with this canister using dehydrated food and minimized packaging. So, that is four-person-days worth. Of course, the first day's food does not go in. On longer than three day trips, we have to go with a larger canister.

Osprey Packs Aura 50 Backpack - Women's - 2800-3200cu in

Osprey Packs Aura 50 Backpack - Women's - 2800-3200cu in

Rating for this product: 2 May 20, 2009

We actually returned this pack before using. We had a few issues. First, the pack did not fit well for Nancy, it actually seemed just oddly shaped. For instance, the load lifters ended too short, they needed to be longer. Neither the hip belt nor the harness seems quite right, I have a lot of experience fitting packs and backpacking in general, but could not get this pack to fit her well. Second, little details seemed dubious. Like the mesh shoulder straps and back panel that would seem to be abrasive to bare skin, or the oddly constructed hip belt pockets. We really appreciated the natural color, but little else lined up for us.

A Good, Light Jacket

Marmot Approach Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Approach Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 10, 2009

I am 5'9", 200lbs with a 41" chest and the large fits well over a baselayer. I was looking for a light, packable wind/water resistant but breathable jacket for cooler temps and this was just right for me. Note that this jacket is intended for movement. Marmot's website provides more information regarding the intended use of this jacket. Pay attention to the M1, M2 or M3 ratings on the website. The burnish is a inconspicuous tan, well suited for blending in with the Sierra high country. I wanted coloring on this layer that was different from what I already use and would minimize visual impact and I am very pleased.

Six years old and still great.

Snow Peak Trek 900 Titanium Cookset

Snow Peak Trek 900 Titanium Cookset

Rating for this product: 5 December 15, 2008

I've been using my cookset for about six years and it has been great. This has been my primary cookset for solo trips. Living in Yosemite, I spend a lot of time backpacking and this cookset has been excellent. The mesh bag does fit too loose, but I tied a little knot into the bottom and that did the trick. I usually pack a fuel canister, stove, coffee and windscreen into the cookset while traveling. I think it's too small for two people, but perfect for homemade dehydrated meals for solo trips.
