Mountain Hardwear Enterprise Backpack - 1900cu in

Mountain Hardwear Enterprise Backpack - 1900cu in

Rating for this product: 4 November 18, 2009

I'm having to carry more than just my laptop and accessories around lately, so I thought I'd try using a laptop backpack. The pack seems well built and sturdy. Plenty of organizing pockets and slots. I'm an organization freak, and there's no way I could have used all of them. There is adequate padding and suspension for a 15.4" laptop, except there is no padding for the top. A strap holds the 'puter in place. Unlike some others I tried I didn't feel it against my back.
Even with a heavy load, the bag fit nicely against my back (I'm 5'11"). The waist strap for being as narrow as it does a pretty good job transferring some of the load. Fully loaded the pack carries the weight well. The one problem is if I pack a battery adapter, noise-cancelling headset case, external hard drive, small ditty bag, several small electronics, and a paperback in the front pockets this stuff crowds into the main compartment. That in turn makes accessing the bottom of bag a two-handed operation: one hand to push the dividing panel out of the way and the other to dig. The capacity is there, but it takes some effort to use and access it. This was a deal-breaker. Well, not entirely: I realized I'm more of messenger bag type for commuting and business travel. Just my preference, and it is not reflected in my rating. So except for having to dig in the main compartment when there's a lot gear in the front pockets, this is a capacious, high-quality laptop pack.

Superb skier's shell

Mountain Hardwear Kramer Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Kramer Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 26, 2009

As an earlier reviewer noted, this hybrid is more of a softshell than not. It makes no more noise than my Marmot softshell and far, far less than my old Arcteryx Theta.

I'm 5'11", 170lbs, average build. Bought a size large and the fit is between fitted and relaxed. There's enough room for a medium weight fleece or vest but won't flap in the wind when wearing just a t-neck. MH has put thin monkey fur in the right places because I haven't noticed it in cold or mild weather.

I've been comfortable in a wider range of temperatures and conditions than I've been in any other shell. Whether it's the chilly first lift of the day or hiking up a ridge for fresh tracks, I've not had to shed or put layers back on. This fabric really breathes, but I can't attest to its water repellency or durability yet. It doesn't turn away 25-40mph gusts like a hardshell, but for skiing I'll take the breathability over completely stopping wind.

Some real thought went into making this a skier's jacket: handwarmer pockets in a lower, more natural position, pockets in places where you'll really use them, powder skirt, big 2-way pitzips, and a collar that stays where you put it. Most of the zippers and drawcords are a one-handed operation and glove-friendly. The wrist pocket works great for a two-way radio: just leave the zipper a little open and bring your wrist to your face; no fiddling or having to dig the radio out.

A few quibbles: the left side mp3 pocket is too small for a cased 5g ipod classic. I've been putting my 'pod in the right side cellphone pocket, but it doesn't have any cord management. I'm right handed so having to put my 'pod on the right side is awkward. Even with the collar is zipped up, it's too far away to keep spindrift and wind off your face. The zipper catches when zipping the collar all the way up, sometimes making it a two-handed job. The pass holder is pretty useless: it's on the side opposite of where lifties look and the clear plastic cover makes barcode scanners unhappy.

Despite these nitpicks this jacket really rocks. It's a real skier's jacket. And for this price, it's an absolute steal.

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Pneumo-Mech Dry Bag

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Pneumo-Mech Dry Bag

Rating for this product: 5 August 16, 2005

I bought this to use on a canoe trip as stuff sack and dry bag for my sleeping bag. It worked very well as a compression sack: it was very easy to squeeze all the air out. Fortunately, I never got to do the acid test of a swamp or capsize, but the fact that no air had seeped in at the end of the end of the day would indicate it holds its seal. The seams, straps and hardware seem sturdy, but I don't know how the bag itself would stand up to a lot of abrasion. All in all, a useful, well-thought out product.

Arc'teryx Covert Collar Zip - Men's

Arc'teryx Covert Collar Zip - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 15, 2005

Warm and rugged. Something different from plain old fleece and seems more breathable than fleece under a shell. It doesn't feel like spun plastic, but nor it is hot and itchy like wool. It goes anywhere when the temp's below 25F, but is as bulky as comparable fleece.
