K2 Pontoon Alpine Ski

K2 Pontoon Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 February 11, 2011

Took these out for a 14" in 36 hour day at brighton. Based on some reviews and a couple hours on them 2 years ago in very packed powder, I was afraid 14" wasn't going to be deep enough for them. I've never been happier to get proven wrong! I was on the 189 which was perfect for me (6'3" and 240). Untouched stuff? Float right through it in an almost sublime relaxed way. Tracked out/chopped up stuff? The flex on the ski absorbs everything that the monster spoon doesn't smash into beautiful powdery dust. Groomers on the return? Surprisingly stable at speed as long as you're not afraid to just point them back to the lift and go for it. Like other reviews have said, the tips do flop around alot on groomers but you never feel, just remember to stay low and forward and don't try carving out any slalom turns because you're just going to provide amusement for anyone on the lift above you. For in the trees? At first I was afraid to venture in, worrying that it was more of a straight line bombing wide open powder fields only ski, but again I was happily proven wrong. Even at 189 these things were surprisingly nimble through really tight trees. Not sure but I think its due to the relatively narrow tail being able to come around really quick. All in all I was flat out blown away and can't wait for another pow day to do some more exploring on them!

Good so far, hope they pack out a little more

Stoic Welder Gauntlet Glove

Stoic Welder Gauntlet Glove

Rating for this product: 4 January 18, 2011

I knew going into it that they'd feel tight but when I got them I was still a little scared of how snug they were, even in the XL. I decided to give them a chance and after a couple days skiing they're definitely better but I'm still hoping they pack out some more. Right now they're great for skiing, but there's just not enough dexterity for anything that requires more uses of the fingers. Hopefully I'll be able to get out on some ice with them and provide an update after that.

As far as quality of materials go, they seem pretty top notch so far. I haven't had the water absorption problems that others have said they got and the gloves seem plenty warm to me. The double helix closure is nice, but it'd be better if there was just one pull on each glove instead of 2.

G3 Targa Telemark Ski Binding

January 5, 2011

Hey drew, I've got 30.5's as well and I had the same issue when I got my Targa's. If you take the plastic piece on the toe plate off, I'll just about guarantee your bindings are set "short". That is, they are looped under the plastic piece instead of going straight through. Set em to straight through and you should have plenty of cable. Just make sure you get the cable set in there evenly.

fun in the deep stuff

Black Diamond Megawatt Ski

Black Diamond Megawatt Ski

Rating for this product: 5 January 2, 2011

Rode these bad boys at Solitude about 2 weeks ago on the 188 with O1 tele binding. It had dumped several feet in the last couple days and I was able to snag a couple of first lines in deep stuff and they just floated so wonderfully. I'm still pretty new to tele and had no problems. Later in the day they dropped the ropes for Honeycomb and it was just incredibly. Effortless floating through the deep stuff, just too bad a tree knocked out power in the canyon so the one trip through honey comb was all i got.

The day before that it was wet clumpy snow and they worked pretty well there too but were a bit much for the churned up, heavy packed out bumps that were forming (atleast for me). On the grromed stuff though I was amazed at how well they got me back to the lifts being full rockered and so wide but there were no issues.

I'll be taking them out again soon and will keep you all updated.

Almost amazing

Stoic Merino Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Stoic Merino Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 2, 2011

Picked this up at the same time I got the long sleeve version. I went with the Navy in XL (I'm 6'3" and 230). Its super soft and was nice for a winter hike up Ferguson Canyon in SLC. I love the color as well, its not nearly as bright as the pics would lead you to believe though. My only complaint is the fit. I don't mind and athletic fit at all but it just seems snug in the wrong way and a little short in the torso. What throws me off is that the long sleeve version is perfect for fit, athletic without being awkwardly snug and just a touch longer in the torso. I'll probably return for a XXL and see how that works.

nice and comfy, wonderful base layer

Stoic Merino 150 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Stoic Merino 150 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 2, 2011

Picked this up for a self christmas present and am really happy I did. I'm 6'3" and about 230 and the XL is a perfect fit. The thumb holes are a real nice feature since my layering is usually long sleeve base, my redpoint vest and then a soft shell. The inside of sleeves on my main softshell are kind of a brushed material and I've had issues with long sleeve bases getting pulled up and bunching. In addition to the fit, the shirt is just super soft, no itching yet (I'll keep an eye on the seams though, that seems to be everyone elses problem area).

Horn getting stuck?

Mad Rock Mad-Lock Belay Device

Mad Rock Mad-Lock Belay Device

Rating for this product: 5 January 1, 2011

I got mine for the same reason as most other people...it's half the price of a guide or reverso! I've been totally stoked with mine, been using it for about 5 months now and have yet to have the horn snag on me. I've even tried to make it catch on the biner and the belay loop just for research and its not happening. Not saying it doesn't happen, just would like to hear how. If anyone has a story please share!

and yeah, the horn makes a pretty handy bottle opener ;)

Mad Rock Mad-Lock Belay Device

January 1, 2011

Hey Luis, when I got mine I had the same question. I figured the basics would be obvious but wasn't sure about the horn feature. The packaging that comes with though has some really good explanations and illustrations showing everything that can be done.

Wild Country Helium Clean Wire Carabiner

Wild Country Helium Clean Wire Carabiner

Rating for this product: 4 November 23, 2010

For a full size biner, these are about as light as you can get and i love the clean nose feature. They've got a pretty wide opening and are easy to handle with gloves when ice climbing. I've been using mine on hand tied "long" draws mostly for trad routes where a traditional QD isn't long enough for clearing rope drag but i don't need a full 2' runner either. The only reason I'd say not to get these is if you're on a very limited budget. They are kind of steep (you could get 2 camp orbit wire gates plus a section of cord and tie your own draw for the same as one of these guys)

5 stars for quality and awesomeness, 4 stars for price :(

Good all around soft shell pant

Marmot Scree Softshell Pant - Men's

Marmot Scree Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 23, 2010

I've got the black pants (even though I hate black outerwear) and love 'em. They've been perfect for all but the coldest days skiing, resort or backcountry. Although if you plan on falling alot, I'd stay away because even though they do a pretty good job shedding snow and water, they will definitely soak through if you're laying in the snow.

Other than skiing, I love the somewhat close fit for ice climbing (catching pants with crampons sucks!) and they're breathable and strechy enough to use for rock climbing on cooler days.

Amazing layering or stand alone piece

The North Face Redpoint Insulated Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 23, 2010

Want a vest that actually fits under a shell? Want one that is still warm when wet? Best of all, want one that won't break the bank? All that's what I was looking for when I picked this guy up and I can only hope they're still making it when my current one wears out. Like another commenter said below, great vest for tall people. I'm 6'3" and about 23o and have never had issues with it being too short on me. Another nice feature, the sleeve holes are elastic so they actually seal up a bit around your shoulders.Being primaloft, it doesn't pack down quite like a down vest might but still gets pretty small and the left hand pocket reverses into a stuff sack.

Pretty sharp

The North Face Elysium Down Jacket - Men's

The North Face Elysium Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 23, 2010

pros: very versatile from the amount of fill, waist can be pulled tight to lock in heat when you're winter camping or opened up to vent on warmer days. Packs down pretty well and with the pertex quantum shell material it's about as light as its going to get with the amount of fill it has. Also I get lots of comments on the colors (older model of this jacket, blue/kiwi green)

Cons: I noticed that sometimes the waist cinches would work their loose, not huge, but annoying at times
