  • Stomping Grounds:

Shenandoah, Catskills, anywhere I can get altitude on the East Coast. And, for saltiness, the Great South Bay where I grew up.
  • Bio:

Grew up on Long Island, NY. Hiked all over the Catskills in early Spring/late Fall, and Presidentials in summer. Now in VA, so I'm stuck with the not so extreme Blue Ridge, but it's still a workout. Currently working on hitting all the peaks along the Blue Ridge, since it's only a short drive away.

I'm training and plugging away in hopes of achieving my ten year goal. By 2014, Rainier. By 2017, Aconcagua and Denali. And finally, by 2020, Everest.

I'm a former smoker and athsmatic, and I want to show kids and adults alike that athsma isn't any kind of death sentence, or even a limiting factor when you properly control it and keep yourself healthy.

La Sportiva Makalu Mountaineering Boot - Men's

La Sportiva Makalu Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 29, 2012

I'm a 9 1/2 EEE and got size 43. I ripped out the stock insoles and went with the black Superfeet. I can wear a wool liner and light to medium wool sock without issues. A heavy sock takes up too much space and the two smallest toes on the left foot will rub the side. This is an issue I have with most boots and when they break in, ceases to be an issue.

With three weeks of daily wear on them, they're only just starting to break in. I don't think I can take them up Mt Washington in winter without an overboot, but they handle what the Blue Ridge can throw at it with style. My Grivel Air Tech New Classics lock onto them solidly. I can grab the center bar and pull with all my might and they don't budge.

you can easily get a higher waterproof rating than goretex and be cheaper. A 10 mil plastic sheet is 100% waterproof, but it doesn't breathe. The key is balance. Typically, when you tighten the weave and raise the waterproof rating, the breathability rating goes down. The fabrics that achieve the combination of both, cost more.

Merrell True Glove Shoe - Men's

December 5, 2011

You won't find arch support, in the traditional sense, in any minimalist shoe. I have low arches and wear vibram fivefingers. I have had no arch issues.
Minimalist shoes tend to encourage you to adopt a more ergonimic mid or front foot strike. These types of strides put the impact on the ball of your foot, which then transfers up through the arch, which is now bearing your weight the way it evolved to. your feet and knees will not feel the impact, but your calves will work more than you're used to.

Before comitting, try them on with insoles you know will work for you, along with your regular liner/sock combination. The last thing you need is to cut off circulation in a cold enviornment.

Coleman 2AA LED Flashlight

October 29, 2011

For stripped screws, you usually have two choices.
1: Hawdware stores sell special tools that can grip the inside of the stripped screw and turn it out without destroying it. This doesn't always work.
2: Drill out the screws, retap the holes, and put back new, wider screws.
For a flashlight, you're probably better off buying a new one.

Kahtoola Microspikes Traction System

Kahtoola Microspikes Traction System

Rating for this product: 5 October 5, 2011

I've used these for a season, and I love them. Ice, snow, wet rocks, these can take it. For general winter hiking, I have had zero issues. The only terrain these can't handle are places you should have crampons for.

They blow away any other bungee/bailing wire combo other companies try to sell as traction aids. The lesser types might work on city streets, but microspikes on the trail, all the way.

If your shoe size is on the cusp, size down for a good snug fit on hard boots, but size up on softer shoes to avoid hot spots.

CAMP USA X-Class Ice Axe DO NOT USE

October 2, 2011

The angle the photo was taken from is misleading. The angle of the pick is not as agressive as it looks. I agree with Phil, for vertical ice, you want tools that were designed for it. Most importantly, for vertical ice, you want a T rated shaft. 20 or 30 feet up a waterfall is no place to find that your axe's shaft is splitting around the rivets holding the pick to the shaft.

Columbia Boundary Line Fleece - Men's

July 28, 2011

Thanks Jeff!

Since it's lighter and has some water and wind repellency, it sounds like it'll fill the gap when it's too windy and damp for a regular fleece and not cold enough for the ballistic.

Columbia Boundary Line Fleece - Men's

July 26, 2011

How does this compare in weight to Columbia's Ballistic Fleece? And is the fit boxy or slim? I'm looking for something to fill the gap between my regular fleeces and my Ballistic fleece.

Columbia Deep Ghyll Jacket - Men's

July 26, 2011

While this shell is not insulated, it will hold the heat in if your activity level is high. On a windy day with temps on the low to mid 30's F, I had to shed the fleece I was wearing underneath and open the vents fully. Even then, I was still working up a sweat. This was a particularly strenuous canyon hike/scramble.

Good shell, great price.

Columbia Deep Ghyll Jacket - Men's

Columbia Deep Ghyll Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 23, 2011

Rain, snow, wind, this shell can take it and asks for more.

The fit is athletic and snug, but not constricting. There is a good degree of stretch kepping it comfortable, while still looking good. The side vents let out extra heat, which is good because the arms tend to not breathe well and hold the heat and moisture in.

The hood has a wire brim, which keeps the visor out well in front of your face. The only drawback, not helmet compatible, so you won't be wearing this shell into the Death Zone. However, for non-extreme winter conditions, it works just fine.

The deep teal is pretty enough to wear as a winter raincoat arround town. The dark blue trim is a perfect match for the blue on my Columbia Ballistic Fleece. As an added bonus, the lower half of the pit zips line up with the side zips on the fleece.

It's a shame, though, if Columbia simply added the interchange tabs and made the hood helmet compatible, they'd have a solid shell to compete with the high dollar ones. Hence, only four stars.

Salomon Quest 4D GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

Salomon Quest 4D GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 4, 2011

After a week of casual break-in wear, I smoke tested these boots on Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah. 8 miles, 2400' vert, 1.3 mile rock scramble and light bouldering. No hot spots or other unusual issues. On dry rocks, a very good grip on some fairly steep grades, but when wet caution is advised on steep rocks. That being said, they performed better than any hiking boot I have ever owned. Granted, my usual brands were Converse and Bates tactical/combat boots.

I intentionally abused these boots on the trail, and never had an issue I'd consider a flaw.

I have fairly flat, wide Fred Flintstone feet, and the stock insole worked very well for me. I normally use Dr. Scholl's sport insole because of the full hard arch. It was too much in this boot for me. I normally wear a 9 1/2 wide, and bought these in a 10 since they don't make wide. The fit is as perfect as I can expect for not having a cobbler custom make a pair.

Does this shell have the 3pt interchange tabs?

Thanks Jeff! I ordered this one anyway, as the trim on the deep teal matches the blue on my ballistic fleece. For the price, I can deal with the lack of tabs!

(Give Jeff some thumbs up, he answers questions within hours!)
