  • Bio:

i like to be outside. backpacking, camping, hiking of all kinds. my dog goes with me because my wife is not a big fan of tent sleeping.

and i am a gear whore. i have been at it a while and have some old stuff that they still make, some duplicate gear from different brands, some new gear that is great and some that is crap, and some new gear on which i spent far more money than i should have...i like to write reviews and i answer questions when i feel i am knowledgeable enough to do so...

Most of my treks have been limited to Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee (although i have done a few of Colorado's 14ers), so keep that in mind when you read my reviews considering cold and altitude.

Rating for this product: 1 March 25, 2012

Almost considered buying this turd because of the price point to replace my year old and highly abused patagonia cadet hat until i saw that the manufacturer warranty is 15 days. This duration of warranty is far less than industry standard, and as such i did not purchase. Nor should you.

Stoic Merino Comp Trail Crew Sock - 1pr

Rating for this product: 3 February 16, 2012

held up well after a few heavy extended uses. these are good for me to down around freezing. i wish they were either longer or shorter. they come a couple inches above my ankle. i like calf length or no show socks, but at the 18 chucks i paid for 3pair off SAC, i am not complaining. decent socks at a good price, but they are not smartwool. so dont be fooled and pay smartwool prices for them!

good (for the price i paid)

Mountain Hardwear Zonal Insulated Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Zonal Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 16, 2012

got this jacket of SAC for 89. i am relatively happy with it at that price point. would not pay the 185 full retail. It is warm enough as a mid-layer, but not as warm as a circumferencially insulated jacket would be. without the polyester/elastane sides, i feel it would be much warmer, but they vent pretty well if you plan on wearing this thing on the move. wore it down into the windy 20s (windchill in the single digits) as a mid layer (1 of 4 layers total) and was not cold. 6'3" 220, and fit a midweight long sleeve icebreaker and a midweight merino halfzip under with a windstopper softshell over with no problems. i will say like others have said, that it does not seem up to the material quality that i am used to getting from Mountain Hardwear; just a gut feeling...its not falling apart or anything and has no scuffs or snags in a couple outings. Got the XL.

overall impression: the Zonal is a decent, lightweight, compressible, insulated jacket for mildly to moderately cold temperatures. is it worth 90 chucks? probably. is it worth 185? no. would i use this as a winter alpine layer? no.

i wouldnt worry about the waist size too much on the jacket. go with what will fit your shoulders. if you read the label on the sizing chart, you will notice that that sizing chart is for patagonia outerwear tops and bottoms...it is not specific to this jacket.

go with the large and return/exchange it if it doesnt fit. backcountry.com has great return policies. i have done just that a couple times before...its painless.

probably not, but your pack should fit under the vestibule where you can keep an eye on it. my brother has the 1man Eureka spitfire and fits his pack in with him just fine. the mountain hardwear sprite 1 will for sure fit your needs if you can still find one... you might also try an extra long bivy that you could fit your gear in with you, but then again when you are not in the bivy with your gear, people will know your pack is in it... there is not really a lot out there that is designed such that you can fit your stuff in with you. you might check out 2 man tents as well. they wont be much heavier than the same model 1 man.

nope. you will have fabric hanging out in some parts and no coverage under the tent floor fabric in others. on the expensive but traditional side, you can seek out the footprint specific to your tent, or you can go to a hardware store and get some plastic sheeting (like tyvek) and cut it to your tent's dimensions (this option will most likely be lighter and will for sure be cheaper, assuming you dont go buy the scissors that will shear a car door to cut it).
