Bio:
i like to be outside. backpacking, camping, hiking of all kinds. my dog goes with me because my wife is not a big fan of tent sleeping.
and i am a gear whore. i have been at it a while and have some old stuff that they still make, some duplicate gear from different brands, some new gear that is great and some that is crap, and some new gear on which i spent far more money than i should have...i like to write reviews and i answer questions when i feel i am knowledgeable enough to do so...
Most of my treks have been limited to Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee (although i have done a few of Colorado's 14ers), so keep that in mind when you read my reviews considering cold and altitude.

jason spellman's my sleeping setups...
Created July 20, 2011
i use different sleeping systems for different weather...as you should! to each his own, but these are my favorites!
dont own the Templum, but my buddy likes to carry his own tent. i let him. ha! he picked it up off steepandcheap.com. check it out...my 2nd favorite site...
My brother owns the spitfire. it is a great tent for the price, but there are better ones out there if you are willing to pay for them.
the lightpath 3 is the best tent in which i have ever slept. 2 people and a big dog, 3 man long trip, or massive 2 man.
all three of the pads listed are bomber and i would not trade mine on the trail for less than double retail. i will try others if they are on sale...and buy these again (at full retail if necessary).
I bought a mountain hardwear gore windstopper jacket 12 years ago and have not looked back since. i love their tents.
and when soloing, the ENO onelink system is only moderately lighter than my 3man tent, but it is a worthy trade-off for the best nights of sleep i have ever had...not just in the backcountry...ever...-

jason spellman's Quetico canoeing/hiking/backpacking/portage/paddling/fishing Gear
Created July 30, 2011
I am taking along more gear than i would for a backpacking trip simply because of the fact that i will not be carrying it most of the time...except for portages. i can suffer through a mile carrying too much... i have not decided on a sleeping system yet, but am leaning toward the hammock. the whole onelink system weighs as much as my 3man tent, but i will probably be taking it because of its versatility...and the fact that i wont be carrying it most of the time anyway. i will not be taking all those knives. the leatherman will be coming along because of its many uses and the fact that we will be fishing. will probably leave the flash II at home and bring a fixed blade survival type knife.
things i am taking that are not seen here include a ferro rod, a bic lighter, and clothing.-

jason spellman's rain gear
Created July 21, 2011
the torrentshell is my around town jacket since i got the Epic. i dont wear the torrentshell pants except in a deluge...i prefer just regular quick dry hiking pants with a DWR coating. i like the Mountain Hardwear Mesa and Matterhorn convertible pants for that.

The North Face Havoc Mid GTX XCR Hiking Shoe - Men's
March 26, 2012
I fit a half size up on TNF Boots from my Merrells and pumas and adidas and Salomon and Keen footwear. But i don't own any b/c i am between sizes. 10.5 is too small and 11 is too big in TNF

Salomon Synapse Mid Hiking Boot - Men's
March 26, 2012
The 10.5 was a little more snug than i am used to. I have a bit wider than standard feet and would go a half size up due to width issues, but i should mention i don't own these. Just tried them on.

KEEN Delta Boot - Men's
March 26, 2012
They will probably be good. But if i was hiking said trail I would look for something with a vibram sole and goretex depending on bridge status and time of year. Definitely give them a good break in period before you go no matter the footwear you choose.

La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's
March 25, 2012
They would work fine, but you would be crazy hot below the tree line. Save these for Alpine pursuits and look elsewhere for your backpacking adventures. These are overkill. I wear Merrell Perimeter GTX when it is too cold for vibram5fingers

Gerber Gator Combo Axe II with Saw
March 13, 2012
i have never seen one. i think that with as deep as the teeth are, if you tried to sharpen the other side you would just snap it in half on 1st use. plus, i am not sure that i would have any use for a semi-flexible knife blade.

i dont know anything about these shoes, but saw your comment about wearing vibrams. i have the same philosophy. i wear kinda similar shoes by Born, when i cant get away with wearing vibrams...check born stewie and kilbury models...they are nothing more than leather sewn to a piece of flat/neutral rubber.

Marmot Scree Softshell Pant - Men's
March 13, 2012
same weight, same material. (backcountry's desciption is wrong for both). the material is Marmot M3 Softshell (90% Nylon, 10% elastane). the tioga has an integrated belt, scuff guards on the ankles, and is more athletically cut. scree is a looser fit and lacks the scuff guards and belt (but has belt loops). hope that helps

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's
December 8, 2011
i wouldnt worry about the waist size too much on the jacket. go with what will fit your shoulders. if you read the label on the sizing chart, you will notice that that sizing chart is for patagonia outerwear tops and bottoms...it is not specific to this jacket.
go with the large and return/exchange it if it doesnt fit. backcountry.com has great return policies. i have done just that a couple times before...its painless.

i dont know the answer to your question, but i am in the same boat with a wide forefoot and a narrow heal. i have used plastic heal cups in the past that are made to provide more mass around your heal. they are not uncomfortable and they served their purpose.

145 centimeters, which equates to 57.08 inches, also 4 foot 9 inches. if that is not long enough for your purposes, you have more serious anatomical problems that would preclude your taking pictures.

Big Agnes Seedhouse SL1 Super Light Tent: 1-Person 3-Season
December 8, 2011
probably not, but your pack should fit under the vestibule where you can keep an eye on it. my brother has the 1man Eureka spitfire and fits his pack in with him just fine. the mountain hardwear sprite 1 will for sure fit your needs if you can still find one... you might also try an extra long bivy that you could fit your gear in with you, but then again when you are not in the bivy with your gear, people will know your pack is in it... there is not really a lot out there that is designed such that you can fit your stuff in with you. you might check out 2 man tents as well. they wont be much heavier than the same model 1 man.

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Mummy
December 8, 2011
this model requires the user to blow it up. air pads, like this one are traditionally the lightest and most packable pads you can buy. they, however, are not the warmest. as inflatable pads go, this is a good choice. you might also look at the thermarest neo-air pads. if you are looking for one that is self inflating, i have had the stoic lightweight step pad for over 2yrs now and love it. people also rave about the thermarest prolite self inflating pad.

Big Agnes Salt Creek 2 Tent Footprint
December 8, 2011
nope. you will have fabric hanging out in some parts and no coverage under the tent floor fabric in others. on the expensive but traditional side, you can seek out the footprint specific to your tent, or you can go to a hardware store and get some plastic sheeting (like tyvek) and cut it to your tent's dimensions (this option will most likely be lighter and will for sure be cheaper, assuming you dont go buy the scissors that will shear a car door to cut it).

Arc'teryx Sabre SV Jacket - Men's
December 8, 2011
at 6'1" i think the sleeves on a medium would be too short for you. a large might be a bit baggy, considering its not an athletic cut. you might try one with a more athletic cut. you could always order it, try it on and return it if it doesn't fit. backcountry.com does that.
