Check out The North Face Blue Ridge Paclite which also has core vents, which would enhance breathablity. Also, the articulated sleeves on this jacket would not make significant differences, if any as they are both extremely light. Some Arc'teryx jackets are also very good choices.

Comparing this to the sl, they are almost equal, though the sl might be more preferred. Mountain Hardwear Jovian Jacket - Men's

November 2, 2011

The method used to measure waterproofness is mmh2o. This measures the amount of h2o (water)in mm stacked on the material, until it leaks. Those psi ratings can be converted to mmh2o by multiplying them by 576.384 (You can find this at http://www.snowboardingforum.com/outerwear-accessories/7859-waterproof-breathability-confused-explained-3.html. Gore-Tex's Waterproof rating is about 28,000 mmh2o on the hydrostatic head for most of their fabrics (Paclite, Pro Shell, Performance, etc.), which is about 12,000 mm worse than the 40,000 mmh2o of the dryQ elite. You can find this at http://www.sierratradingpost.com/lp2/waterproof-guide/ even though it does not show dryqelite (I was caught between Conduit and dryqelite). Even though th e 40,000 mmh2o is extremely high, the breathability seems unusual. For a jacket, the 40K is extremely high, which may be part of the air-permeability .

Also, some of Backcountry's ratings are COMPLETELY WRONG, such as the Stoic Vaporshell, which they recently changed to 28,000 mmh2o, which is still off, when according to the official site states is 20K and the breathability, which they state is 68,000 gm/24hrs (http://www.backcountry.com/store/review/200108808/Hydrostatic-head-quot;Waterproof-Ratin.html). However 20,000 is already a lot and the more waterproof, the less breathable.

The breathability for Pro Shell is about 25,000 g/m2 24 hrs which is less than dryqelite according to bc, however is better than any type of waterproof/breathable technology, including eVent, which is 22,000. However, some companies, such as Polartec Neoshell thought that 20,000 mmh2o is too much and made theirs 10,000 mmh2o and is extremely breathable, possibly more breathable than Pro Shell and dryqelite.

With windproofness, the rating for waterproof/breathable tech is about 4-7 cfm, which is not like Gore's Windstopper fabric (which is 0 cfm), but is windproof as the mininum is 5 cfm (I've also heard that MH dryqelite is 0.5 cfm). Gore's new Active Shell is also quite breathable, possibly more than neoshell and dryqelite, however if you are not walking into a downpour, but just some light to mild rain, you might want a softshell. Also, The North Face's HyVent Alpha's waterproof rating is quite high, about 43,000 mmh2o, however the breathablity is not very good.

This jacket has a 25 psi waterproof rating, however when researching, I found that HyVent Alpha 3L has a 75 psi rating. Is 25 psi the correct rating or is it because of the relatively weak face fabric? Also, the 625 g/m2 breathabilty rating is next to nothing at the same rating as 2l which they say is 25% more than older fabrics?

Brunton Nomad V2 Digital Compass

Rating for this product: 5 September 13, 2011

I purchased the V2 for $55.00 and it so far has been working well for me. The compass gives a very quick reading and is extremely accurate when I point it at the same direction of my Suunto MC2 by less than one degree. The thermometer is also useful, but is slow. The buttons are small, but do not go off in my pack. The clock is accurate and the backlight is useful in the dark.

The North Face Resolve Jacket

The North Face Resolve Jacket - Men's

The North Face Resolve Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2011

I bought this jacket for $80.00 at a different store and this is an excellent jacket. The HyVent makes this jacket highly waterproof and is surprisingly breathable. The mesh on the inside makes the jacket more comfortable as you do not feel the plastic feeling on the back side of the nylon. The hood can be big, however you can easily solve this problem if you adjust the drawcord or put a cap on top. I have been using this jacket everywhere from home in New York City to The White Mountain 4000 footers to the Catskill 3500 footers and use it year round to block either rain, snow or wind. As it is not the lightest jacket out there, if you are a ultralighter, this may not be your first choice, but for the low price, this jacket is unbeatable.

Asolo FSN 95 GTX Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 7, 2011

I recently purchased the Asolo FSN-95 GTX at a different store for $105 and I've climbed with them out of the box new in the New Hampshire 4000 footers. The boots are extremely durable, shed water like crazy and have a good grip for a non-vibram sole. I climbed them on Eisenhower in bad weather, Washington, Cannon, Osceola, Chocura (even though its not 4000 ft) and much more. The gore-tex is surprisingly breathable and comfortable. The only problem I've had was that the metal lacing kept bending, and now is soft, however that does not affect the shoe's performance

The North Face Pursuit Jacket - Men's

September 7, 2011

According to the specifications, both the Venture and Pursuit has an equal waterproof rating of 25 psi (lbs per square inch), though I heard that they have 40 psi. The breathabilty rating is almost the same, though the Pursuit is slightly more breathable. The HyVent 2.5 Layer is more breathable and more durable as it is a waterproof membrane, not a polyutherene coating. This jacket is slightly lighter though they are both made of the same material. Both the Pursuit and the Venture have underarm vents and have adjustable hoods. The Pursuit's retail price is about $130, which is $30 more expensive than the Venture's price. One thing that the Venture has that the Pursuit does not is that in can stuff in it's own pocket. Overall, in terms of features and performance, I would chose the Pursuit, however, if you want the one with a lower price, you would want to choose the Venture.

The North Face Angstrom 30 Daypack

The North Face Angstrom 30 Backpack - 1830cu in

The North Face Angstrom 30 Backpack - 1830cu in

Rating for this product: 5 September 6, 2011

I purchased the Angstrom 30 at a different store. The bag is very light, has good organization, is very sleek and has good capacity. The included rain cover is very useful, however is sometimes hard to get out of the tiny compartment which is placed in the water bottle holster. Even though it frustrates me, I put it in the zipper compartment in the secondary compartment. The rain cover has velcro straps to attach to the top handle so it does not fly away. You can also attach it by pulling out the plastic piece from the inside through the hydration sleeve hole and click the draw-string into the piece. My biggest concern was when the hip buckle cracked, however when I called The North Face, they shipped me a much better, stronger buckle, which is part of the reason I am giving it five stars.

The North Face Base Camp Travel Canister - 300cu in

Rating for this product: 5 September 6, 2011

I purchased the The North Face's "Base Camp Travel Canister for use as a first aid kit. It holds all my first aid items, is extremely durable and resists water. My only concerns was when I found a tiny hole in the bag, however, that problem was easily solved by sealing it with seam sealer. I think that was either a defect, or a tweezer or some sharp object penetrated the Thermoplastic Elastomer material (TPE), which I thought was indestructible.
