I was using this as a base layer on this day, but took my shell off to take this picture.

The North Face Arctic Down Parka - Women's
February 20, 2011
The North Face web site specifies it is imported. It does not say where from, but there is good chance it is somewhere in Asia.

Marmot ROM Softshell Jacket - Men's
February 19, 2011
I've never seen the Kingpin in stores, but looking at the product listing on the Marmot page and the Marmot technical manual, it appears the primary difference is the ROM is made from Windstopper material and the Kingpin from PolarTec Power Shield.
The ROM is more wind resistant (less than 2 CFM versus 8-16 CFM), but the Kingpin is probably more breathable and better for high exertion activities. The Kingpin also looks to have a few more features like an additional chest pocket.

Osprey Packs Stratos 24 Backpack - 1300-1700cu in
February 19, 2011
The Stratos has air speed suspension that would be much better for outdoor use. The Talon would be a fine pack for school, but I don't know if it would keep you as cool on the trails. Ospey says the Talon has "AirScape backpanel with ridge molded foam and air chimneys". I'm not sure how effective it is compared to the air speed suspension.
You're probably best off stopping by a store that has these in stock and trying them on if you can.

Columbia Black Diamond Dash Parka - Women's
February 18, 2011
Sheila,
Most the component jackets (including Columbia) just require you to zip the liner into the shell on both the left and right sides then run the sleeves through and snap them in place. What about this jacket makes that process such a pain? You should only have to zip the shell when the insulated layer is installed.

Marmot Castleton Pant - Men's
February 18, 2011
Seth,
It appears all of the Castleton pants Backcountry is offering are 32" inseam. Marmot's web site specifies either 30" or 32" inseam is available. Check out:

J,
I'd be concerned about losing the gaiter feature. Can you return the pants instead?

Marmot Approach Softshell Jacket - Men's
February 9, 2011
If you are just using this primarily to block the wind you should be ok. This is a fairly light jacket and probably not good to temperatures that cold unless you are being very active and wearing other layers.

Marmot Original DriClime Windshirt - Men's
February 6, 2011
Roger,
I think backcountry is reducing prices on color / size combinations that they have too much inventory on. The only combinations currently on sale are lead / gargoyle S & XL and vapor blue / eclipse XL.

Kahtoola MICROspike Traction System
February 5, 2011
Joe,
I use a L on 10.5 Merrell boots and the fit is good. I think a L may be pushing the limit of what will work with size 14 trail running shoes. There's a better graphic sizing chart from the manufacturer at the link.

Marmot Bastione Component Jacket - Men's
January 26, 2011
I looked at this jacket at a local retailer alongside the Tamarack. They seem fairly similar side by side except the Bastione has the Thermal R layer inside. Both seem like very nice jackets, but for an extra $60 it seems like a good idea to get the Thermal R layer.

Osprey Packs Stratos 36 Backpack - 2100-2300cu in
January 21, 2011
It is bigger than what you are looking for. Per the Osprey web site its dimensions are:
In: 25.6 x 11.8 x 11.4
I think you are going to have a hard time finding a pack with suspension that will fit the 7 inch dimension. I did find the Manta on Osprey's web site that is close to what you are looking for:
In: 19.3 x 9.1 x 7.5

Mountain Hardwear Dome Perignon Beanie
January 16, 2011
I'd recommend black. My hat is titanium, but I picked it up at an outlet store and it was the only color they had. Both are nice colors, but it depends upon your preference.
