  • Bio:

"I like to think of myself as a person that you need to keep your eye on or I'll wander off into the forest and forget to come back."

I'm a hero to some and a savior to the rest. Some people say that I think to highly of myself but that was before I melted their pants with the heat that radiates from my plethora of accomplishments.

I enjoy backpacking/hiking and fantasize about crashing in a plane in Siberia where I'll spectacularly survive and my sole motivation will be returning to my heartbroken wife.

I like climbing but that doesn't mean I'm very good at it. Bouldering and sport are my forte's.

I trail run as often as I can but saving the world on a daily basis usually interferes with that plan.

I also dabble in cycling, ice climbing and skiing but know almost nothing about them.

One day I'm going to find definitive proof that Sasquatch exists (not like those hillbillies from the history channel, but real substantial evidence).

"To believe in bigfoot is to hope, to dream -- to resist the crassness of mass culture and to insist that ones individuality remains untouched."

Excellent for car camping

GSI Outdoors Kitchen Set 23

GSI Outdoors Kitchen Set 23

Rating for this product: 5 May 11, 2012

We bought this set as a one-size-fits-all car camping untensil extraordinaire and it's exactly that. We love the versatility of all the items included and love that all we have to do is grab the case and we know we've got everything we need. There's even extra room inside for a set of plates and other goodies.
Keep in mind, it's a big case, bigger than we expected. So I would not recommend this for anything other than car camping as it will take up a ludicrous amount of space in your backpack.

No Bueno for Canyoneering

Sperry Top-Sider Son-R Ping Buckle Water Shoe - Men's

Sperry Top-Sider Son-R Ping Buckle Water Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 11, 2012

I don't do much boating but I certainly do a lot of canyoneering and the hard part about canyoneering is finding a good pair of shoes for the hike in that also don't absorb a ton of water and stick to the wet sand-stone in Zion. I am also always looking for something a little less expensive than what Five Ten has to offer.
Well, these shoes are not going to fit that bill at all. They're big and floppy (wide) which I'm assuming is to accommodate a thick neoprene sock for kayakers. There's pretty much zero support and if you try the shoes without socks on, they're jagged on your feet. I did not have a chance to try the grip on a wet surface so I can't comment on how they do there. Despite all that complaining, they do have a squishy foot bed like no other shoe I've ever worn.

Granted, I know these shoes weren't designed for the activity that I was buying them for which is why they aren't getting zero stars. Just know that if you're looking for an alternative to the Canyoneer 2, these are not it.

Great for canyoneering

Osprey Packs Stratos 36 Backpack - 2100-2300cu in

Osprey Packs Stratos 36 Backpack - 2100-2300cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 1, 2012

I've been looking for a couple of years for a good pack to use while canyoneering, and you'd be surprised how hard it is to find one. After lots of looking I finally decided on this one and it's been a great choice.
Plenty of room in the pack to carry a rope, harness, webbing, food (as long as you don't mind some smooshed sandwhiches) and some extra shoes for the hike in. I went with the Stratos because of the front loading feature which makes it easy to stuff the rope in the pack when you're on the move.
My only beef with the pack is that it does only have the two main pockets and the smaller of the two is pretty tiny especially if you've got the main pocket loaded up with gear. I think I might look into installing a shelf just above the front loading pocket to keep my rope separate from all my other junk.

Chaco Flip Eco Tread Sandal - Men's

Chaco Flip Eco Tread Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 7, 2012

Spent the entire summer of 2011 (give or take a couple adventures) in nothing but my Chaco Flips! Excellent support, stay on your feet and look great. There is a break-in period of about a week and a half if you're feet aren't used to Chaco's straps. But soon enough you'll forget there ever was an issue. I fully expect to get 1, if not 2 or 3, more summers out of these guys.

Light and Stretchy

prAna Blink Long Short - Men's

prAna Blink Long Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 7, 2012

Needed a pair of casual shorts that breathed well, were lightweight, and could handle adventure at a moments notice and ended up with a pair of these. They do everything I needed them to and do it flawlessly. Super light, dry uber quick and allow lots of mobility. A little on the longer side, I'm 6'1" and the mediums come down to almost mid-calf, I usually end up rolling them up a little. Also, a little baggier than I had expected from looking at the pictures. The hips also tend to flare out from the tight elastic waistband. Overall a rockin' pair of shorts.

Typical Stoic Fit

Stoic Breathe Composite Bottom - Men's

Stoic Breathe Composite Bottom - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 7, 2012

A common complaint about Stoic products is the funky fit that seems to come so standard. While these are not an exception to that rule (long tight legs and big crotch), the funny fit doesn't seem to cause any complications. As far as breathable base layers go, they perform fantastically. A little thicker than I was expecting (I was comparing to Patagonia's Capilene 3's), these are a nice addition to my cold morning running attire. I'm 6'1" with a 32" waist and the Medium fits superbly!

great sock

SmartWool Hiking Light Crew Sock

SmartWool Hiking Light Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 5 February 15, 2011

of all the socks i own, these are probably my favorite. wool does a great job of fighting off those terrible foot odors. super warm and lots of support. despite being the hiking lite, still pretty substantial thickness. seems super durable and well constructed.

Arc'teryx Phase SV Zip-Neck Top - Men's

Arc'teryx Phase SV Zip-Neck Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 15, 2011

love arc'teryx and love the phase sv. great for using while layering up for a cold day. also great as a standalone piece on those warmer days for running. sweat evaporates super quick, and doesn't hold onto that smell that most of us create during those longer runs! would recommend it to anybody.

GoPro HD HERO Naked

GoPro HD HERO Naked

Rating for this product: 5 February 15, 2011

i love this camera. haven't had the chance to take it underwater yet, but made several trips to mountains to use it in the snow and haven't had a single complaint. love the easy to use functionality of it. when using the waterproof case, it has a hard time recording sound, but this should be expected as it's sealed inside of a plastic shell. can't wait to get out there and get some more sweet footage from the angles that would otherwise be impossible to capture.

Merrell Chameleon3 Stretch Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 15, 2011

i love these shoes. super roomy and warm, especially in the cold winter time. great support, nice and cushiony. i like the weight a lot. not real heavy but seem to be extremely durable. i'm hoping these will last for quite some time. will report back if i have any problems with them, but so far they're holding up great and i don't have a single complaint. especially love being able to slip them on without having to worry about lacing up.

great insulator

Patagonia Capilene 2 Bottom - Men's

Patagonia Capilene 2 Bottom - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 15, 2011

these things work great as an insulating piece. i slap on these things when i know it's going to be a cold day (between 32 and 0 farenheit) and couldn't be happier. my only complaint would be that the elastic around the ankles seems kind of big. usually have to pull them back down into place several times throughout the day. but, that's not a big deal.

La Sportiva Crosslite Trail Running Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Crosslite Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 15, 2011

excellent shoes. super grippy with a nice wide front for extra stability. pretty light, i've felt lighter, but nothing to complain about. they do seem to be a little snug, might want to try going up half a size. i normally wear a size 10.5 in U.S. sizing and went with a 44 on these and they still seem a little snug. all in all, an excellent shoe

Stoic Merino Ski Sock - 1 Pair

Rating for this product: 4 January 13, 2011

I wasn't expecting such a heavy duty sock when I ordered these originally. Also, seems to make my leg itch more than other wool socks. Other than that, excellent knee high sock.

Excellent Down

Marmot Ama Dablam Down Jacket - Men's

Marmot Ama Dablam Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 13, 2011

I'm shocked at how much I love this jacket. Fits like a glove and keeps me warmer than bundling up in 5 layers of cotton. I'm simply impressed. Marmot down is the best that I've worn. However the fit is a little weird. I'm 6' 1", 165lbs and normally I would go with a Medium and it would fit me like a super star, but I find with this jacket a Small gets the job done. However I do like a more athletic cut so if that's what you're liking for I might consider sizing down.

Vans Rata Vulc Shoe - Men's

Vans Rata Vulc Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 10, 2010

A little tight at first. After a couple of times slipping it on and off you get the hang of it and after about a week of breaking it in it's super easy to do. Super comfy and pretty bangin. Lots of positive comments from others when I walk in the room.

Great coat

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 25, 2010

I bought this coat in 2008 with no real understanding on the down rating system. Just wanted a down coat and the price was right on this bad boy. I've taken this thing through a lot and it's still kicking. It's not excessively tough, but if you're careful you shouldn't have any troubles with tearing. My only real problem is one that seems to be expressed quite often with this particular coat and that is size. For those with a longer torso, I would go with something different. Also the fit isn't very slim, very "puffy" and round. And in extreme cold temperatures, I would suggest a second layer below. Other than that, great coat.
