  • Stomping Grounds:

    Jackson County, Southern Oregon
  • Bio:

I like being in the back country under hard conditions such as desert camping in the summer and mountain camping in the winter. Nevada and eastern Utah in the summer, Crater Lake in the winter. These are no-nonsense environments and they provide a much-needed break from what passes too often for reality. I prefer gear that is reliable though simplicity and durability. I also prefer versatile gear so that I don't have to buy every gadget out there.

DAKINE Pro 2 Backpack - 1600cu in

DAKINE Pro 2 Backpack - 1600cu in

Rating for this product: 4 January 25, 2011

It appears that I have an earlier version of this unit; however the basic idea is the same. This is a durable peice of gear especially since I use it year-round as a day pack. I do end up with my probe sticking up through one of the zippers but you can interlock the toggles on them so they don't come apart casually, but you can still pull them apart when needed. It does have internal pockets for probes but they don't accomodate the probe I have. I would like the shovel blade pocket to be easier to get the shovel in and out of but it does fit, and the handle does fit right into the side loops. The two small mesh inner pockets near the top are nice; in my case they carry 1) compass, survey marker tape, headlight and 2) matches, lighter, tinder, space blanket instead of goggles but organization is always personal. The hip belt pocket has a clip for keys.

I actually like the extra webbing; one strap is detachable and this provides a lot of options if settling in to a location for a while.

Bombproof

Mountain Hardwear Exposure II Parka - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Exposure II Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 11, 2011

I selected this parka for back-country XC skiing, snowshoeing and camping. I tend to go out in bad weather and I sweat a lot, so moisture control is a big issue. A week or so ago I went on an XC ski trip in a storm, and this parka was bombproof. I did get wet inside, despite the pit zips, but I probably should have removed one of my inner layers, or slowed down, since the trip out was uphill. Even so, I was warm and comfortable while being blasted by wind and snow, and I did not fasten the snow skirt or tighten any drawstrings. So, as a storm shelter this parka is great.

Bonus points for extra long sleeves; this can be a problem with many jackets but not this one. One snap went missing from the snow skirt but I attribute that to in-store damage; my wife bought it at a local store. I know I could return it to MH but I don't see the point; this parka already does exactly what I want it to do and the snaps are not the only closure system for the skirt.

The jacket does not compress much but it does fit into a daypack along with an emergency fleece blanket and all the usual stuff.

Smith Phenom Goggle

December 28, 2010

Fogging is the big issue for me. No downhill for me; it's all backcountry XC or snowshoe, sometimes way back there and alone, often hot and sweaty work. I just had a pair of Bolles (gift) fail during a typical Pacific NW storm today - my own private whiteout. These Smiths are pretty much advertised as the solution to my problem. I'm also looking at the Anon Hawkeyes and the Oakley Crowbars. Obviously I will have to try them on for fit but what does anybody have to say about ventilation? Side issue: peripheral vision.

The North Face Moraine 33 Tent 3-Person 3-Season

The North Face Moraine 33 Tent 3-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 September 5, 2006

This tent seemed to be the most 3-season tent for the money when we were shopping for a smaller tent, and after using it I think we were right. It will be a snug fit for 3 adults but it is luxurious for 2, which is typical for most tents anyway. Setup is easy, footprint is moderate and ventilation is superb without being drafty. No storms yet but the geometry looks decent, there is plenty of interlink between fly, frame, and guy points, and there are 9 anchor points even before guying out. This is a real 3-season, not convertible, so our aged Mountain Hardwear Skyview 5 is still the tent of choice for cold, snow, and places with dust storms, but for less than extreme camping this is a lot of bang for the buck.

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 September 5, 2006

This is my 2nd and hopefully my last headlamp. I use it for camping and sometimes some very late night yard chores. I mostly use the 3 LEDs on the low setting and get adequate task and navigation light. The single beam packs quite a punch and if you really need to see what's around you (like finding that difficult campsite) it's like having a small Maglite strapped to your head, without the weight. I especially like that it's waterproof.

a good bag for big guys

The North Face Goliath 3D Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Polarguard

The North Face Goliath 3D Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Polarguard

Rating for this product: 5 February 2, 2005

This bag turned out to be as good as I'd hoped or even better. I bought it for snow camping, which I've been doing in a smaller 20 degree bag. Room was the big issue and the Goliath (long) with it's 68" shoulder circumference is perfect for a 5'-11" 210lb weightlifter. Struggling to operate zippers etc from inside are a thing of the past, and as a tosser and turner I am well accommodated. The 0 degree rating is bonus; I shed layers to sleep whereas my campmate did not and still found it unnecessary to zip it all the way up, much less tighten any drawstrings. Also the hefty zippers are easier to operate than those on my other bag. This is easily worth the cost and definitely worth dealing with the extra size.
