A great "beginners" tent and more

The North Face Rock 22 Bx Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

The North Face Rock 22 Bx Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 March 10, 2011

As suggested by others this tent is a great way to ease into camping. I got the Right-to-Outlet version of the tent (sagitta)a year ago. It is very easy to set-up and very reliable. We haven't had any condensation or water leak issues. It is not the most light but it is light enough to figure if backpacking is your thing. At 34sq ft it is quite roomy for a backpacking tent. My wife, myself and our 75lb lab fit just fine. There are "3-person" tents out there that are just 5 sq ft bigger.

We've used this tent for car-camping, boat camping and quite a bit of backpacking. Thanks to it we figured that we love the outdoors, and even though it has served it purpose as an entry tent, unless if we settle to one type of camping or our needs change somehow we will probably stick to this all-arounder.

A shot at the perfect ski shell?

Marmot Flight Commander Jacket - Men's

Marmot Flight Commander Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 8, 2011

With this jacket Marmot took a shot at the perfect ski shell. Surprising soft Gore-tex performance shell, fully taped seams, powder skirt, pit zip venting (the product description is wrong), a cut that allows for layering, great pockets. It falls short in two ways though: 1. The sleeves could be longer/better isolated from outside (with gaiters of some sort). I am 5'11 and the length for size L fits me marginally. 2. The hood is not helmet compatible. I can cram it over my helmet when on the lifts but there is no way I can ski with it.

In my particular case I intend to keep it since none of these flaws are critical to me plus I got a very good deal on it. Hopefully next year's edition improves on these topics and yields the perfect jacket.

Marmot Flight Commander Jacket - Men's

March 8, 2011

As suggested by others I would be more concerned about the sleeve length. I am 5'11 and 180lbs and the sleeves on the L are just right. In terms of layers the jacket allows for several. I tried it with a merino base layer, a 100 weight fleece and a marmot zeus and the fit is fine. I can't imagine wearing more layers.

My wife loves it!

Outdoor Research Solitude Softshell Jacket - Women's

Outdoor Research Solitude Softshell Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 3, 2011

Just received it but it is warm and the fit is nice. Add the fact that I got it in SAC and this is a very sweet deal. My wife looks forward to using it for spring skiing and hiking. Will report back with impressions.
