Actually two pairs of these pants in this shot, one pair giving you the bird (sorry about that) one pair dancing staring at the ground. For the record, I know what Widespread Panic looks like, so I'm the one looking at the ground, not giving you the bird!

The DWR finish is good for skiing in, if you don't go down like a street walker jonesing for a hit. However I have heard from several individual that the jacket, or possible the DWR picks up grease like a mo-fo. Keep this in mind if your spending your time wrenching on snowmobiles or cats like these grease monkey!

The mantra would be a better bet for out west, they can rip the groomers and crud up, and hang till about 18" of powder, then they start to tip dive. That number would depend on your weight and the length. I'm 165 lbs and ride 184 Mantra. I have ridden these on hard pack, but not deep powder, I suspect they would tip dive on me at closer to 12".

Dynafit TLT Vertical FT Binding

March 13, 2012

I'd like to add to this here, Sandy and Arthur are spot on on this, but here is another tip...

When I step the toe piece in I pick the whole ski up and "wag" it back and forth a few times (just like twice) then I step down into the heel piece. This helps to ensure that both toe grommets (holes) are set correctly and that one it's just a hair or two off. Does that make sense?

Great Look, meh... (poor?)QUALITY...

Mammut Nordwand Jacket - Men's

Mammut Nordwand Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 March 6, 2012

Man, I am saddened to write this review...

First off let me say I look of this coat, the look is sick, the function has been awesome, overall I was blown away by this coat...

For about 2 months.

Then I noticed the shoulder "pilling" where the inside Velcro patch rubs on the outside shoulder. An issue that could be solved by placing the Velcro patch on the opposite (ie left side) of the jacket. As it stands now the Velcro has created wear on what is essentially a almost brand new 650 dollar coat.

It is not a small issue, it is not just noticeable, but destructive of the face-fabric. For this price point, on Gore-Pro, after 2 months of use, this is completely unacceptable.

To top off the issue, I have been informed this is "normal" wear and tear, and not covered under warranty.... REALLY? On a 650 Gore-Pro shell? I've put an Arcteryx coat through 150 days of torture and it looks brand new

I'd say "save your money" but who wants to do that, if you need to pop on a six-hundred dollar coat go for it...

Just make sure it starts with an "Arc" and ends with an "treyx"

Well at least if you buy it here you can just stick bc.com with the return on this when it fails you and Mammut's no help at all....

(Read COMMENTS below, I am updating this review to reflect that)

Dynafit ZZero 4 C-TF Alpine Touring Boot

October 27, 2011

Dynafit boots tend to run more narrow than Scarpa, I'd put them on par with Technica. They arn't any longer or shorter than any other boots out there, I've never noticed any difference in length between brands. Could be your are asking where the shell splits. It's on the whole sizes for dynafit.

Can you haet mold the liners at home, yes. Can you jack up your boots doing this, FOR SURE. Give a local boot fitter some cash and some beers... You'll be glad you did.

Amazing Light Fleece

Arc'teryx Strato Fleece Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Strato Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 13, 2011

Well I said a light fleece, but what I mean is light in feel and weight, but HEAVY on warmth! The blue color is rich and deep in it's tone, and the fit is great. Seams on this jacket allow it to cover your midsection when you reach up and back. The fabric is very un-fleece looking, so it's different in it's wear when you're out on a night after the slopes.

I like the cuffs as well, the ends fit nicely on my wrists, and are tight with out being overly tight. The logo is just flashily enough that people will know your wearing an Arc, with out looking like a Canadian Nascar driver! Zipper pulls on hand warmers are a plus, nice and durable, (like all Arcteryx gear!)

I'm 5'11" 165-170 lbs, and I got the M, fit great, a L would have been just a little too big for my look.

Armada JJ Ski

Armada JJ Ski

Rating for this product: 5 September 3, 2011

The JJ’s are a game changer for sure. They float, they pop, they scream and they smear, they f-ing rally! They get around really well, coming into turns easily, and they float like champ thru powder. They mellow out transitions and small bumps, etc with their size and float.

I like that they can knock down wind lips and spin drifts, sliding sideway over the top, buttering down the tops of bumps the same way as well (hey it’s still powder, even if it’s been thrown up there untracked on a 2-foot tall bump in the middle of Tower 3 at J-hole). They can charge fast and get you outta a tight spot, and the width and early rise tip and tail allow you to really move out of a jam quick, ie the bottom of a chute with sluff running down behind you.
That being said, I will let it be known that I am a bit of a Eruo-Trash skier, I like tight turns, and a lot of them. So the “playfulness” of this ski for me might be a little “hookie” for another man. If you like a powder turn that is built to run big turns, or none at all, I might get something with a higher turn radius, like I dunno, the XXL Rider.

I’m 5’11”, 165 lbs, and I ride the 185, which might be a little bit on the large size for me, but I make it work. I don't do much (read: any) skiing backwards or crazy tricks, so I mounted mine at the factory recommended, not forward of this, they seem to ride great here and come around fast, if you ride more rails and ski backwards you might want to move them forward.

CamelBak Ergo Hydrolock

CamelBak Ergo Hydrolock

Rating for this product: 5 August 14, 2011

I just love this, if you don't have one, get it! Nothing worse than bending down to fiddle with a ski boot and winter and getting drenched by your camelbak, NOTHING!

As for issues with freezing, I always open my bit valve up with my hand after I am down, and raise it above my head, this gets most of the water out f the lock area, the bite valve, and out of the tube, the places it is most likely to freeze in. Alternative to that, I make sure and take a sip on every chairlift, or every few hundred yards skinning, keeping things from freezing up.

Stoic Merino Ski Sock - 2 Pair

Rating for this product: 4 August 14, 2011

I like these, but man are they tall, practically come up past my knee! Well at least to the bottom of it. If you have long shins, these are the sock for you! Lots of padding, seems like the wrap around padding for the shin could be a touch lower. But overall, for the price these things are selling at, these are amazing, a little on the thick side, which is great, unless your spring skiing!

This is thick, and heavy, and great for car camping, I would not use it for hiking, or to accommodate two people, in the back of my VW Passat wagon, it's the boss, or on the ground right outside of it, or as a crash pad for friends. Sure it's not crazy functional, but nice to be able to roll over and not right off your pad.

Powerbar Gel Blast - Box (12 Packs)

Rating for this product: 3 August 14, 2011

High in caffeine, which is good, but also a ton of just straight sugars. The gels Powerbar makes have a much better content of carbs, but these are like 35g of carbs, 34 g. of sugars. Not the best mix.

They taste good, (I got the cola)but watch out for the crash if these alone are used for extended activates, like things lasting 3 plus hours, couple them with some good long carbs!

Eagle Creek Take 2 ORV Trunk 28 Bag

Eagle Creek Take 2 ORV Trunk 28 Bag

Rating for this product: 5 August 14, 2011

Not only is this like 3 bags in one, it absolutely packs a ton of gear, and allows you to break it down, to either check two bags, or carry one one. Nice because even if you have to pay to check a second bag, it is almost always cheaper to pay for that bag then pay the overages on one bag that is over weight.

I just wish it had better options built in for flying with a suit, ahhh well, I only own one of those anyways!

ProBar Old School PB and J - 12 Pack

ProBar Old School PB and J - 12 Pack

Rating for this product: 5 August 14, 2011

Wow, what a great trail treat! These things really taste great, and pack some long term energy in them. The fat and calorie content are not for the faint of heart, but that’s because they are a meal replacement bar. When your on the go, and need to get some serious fuel into your body, and gels and shot blocks just are not going to cut it, throw one of these in the pack. I’ve tried a variety of flavors, and haven't found a bad one in the bunch!

Ok, sure they are pricey, let's talk about that: did you look at the ingredients list? Where else can you get an OG, Vegan, Raw food mean for this price. Cheaper than a trip to the farmers market, and better tasting than your weird friend's "heady" recipes, brahhhhhh.

Sure you could get something not as good for you for cheaper, but you could also eat dog food like mad max, and I don't see you doing that yet either....

Bottom Line: YUM!

Thick, like a brick

Clifbar Clif Shot Energy Gel - 24 Pack

Clifbar Clif Shot Energy Gel - 24 Pack

Rating for this product: 4 August 14, 2011

Well not that thick, but still...

They have a coffee cup on the outside of the caffeinated ones indicating how much caffeine they have in them, good thing, cus this thing eats like a brick. A little too thick for my tastes, not bad if you hit ti before a workout, but I’d hate to try and wolf one of these down while biking or running!

Still, gets your jacked and give you some serious go-juice!

I got the mocha, pretty good taste, bumps this from 3 to 4 stars!

Don't Bonk

Powerbar Gel - Box (24 Packets)

Powerbar Gel - Box (24 Packets)

Rating for this product: 5 August 14, 2011

Taste is pretty good with some of these, the Tangerine being the exception for me, but everyone’s tastes are different I guess. I like the consistency of these, not too runny, but not so thick you have to chew them, like say the ClifBar gel. They have a good variety of sugar and carb, coming in at 25-25 g of carbs, 10g of which are sugars. So a good combo so you won’t bonk out hard quickly.

For long activities I like to jump from no-caffeine to caffeine, not hitting the strong stuff too fast, so I don;t bottom out.

An amazing probe for one reason only, besides length. The laser etched numbers don’t rub off. I’ve had previous poles where after a season of skiing, (I ride with my gear 95% of my days, in or out of area) the number are totally rubbed off. Not a huge deal, unless you’re trying to record accurate snow measurements in a pit. If you want to get your layers charted right, get this pole!

Armada JJ Ski

Armada JJ Ski

Rating for this product: 5 August 14, 2011

Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandal - Men's

Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 14, 2011

I liked the added stability, and increased traction in less than ideal environments, even without the toe strap! I went sans toe strap because I had heard that it can synch down on your toe, and that if it get grit and sand in there it acts like a blade between your toes…ouch!
The draw back with these beef sandals is weight; these things are some hefty SOBs! They also have a bit of a break in time, so don’t get them and plan on going big right away, give yourself a few days of break in around town before you need to scramble some serious distances in these!
5 Stars, except for the weight and break in time, so 4 stars.

Yes it can fit a helmet, if you put it in with your skis I might back some base layers around it. Watch the weight, if you put too much into these bags they will go over weight limit quick, so it might be cheaper to check a second bag, and put your helmet in the middle of that.

Armada JJ Ski

March 8, 2011

I'd say the two are pretty close to comparable. I've skied them both, and would be happier with either. The JJ's seemed lighter to me. But if you skied the S7 you skied the JJ as a rule of thumb.

The 175 is going to ride like a much shorter ski. What sorta conditions/where do you ride at? I'm 5'11", 175 and an expert (cough, cough) skier. I ride the 185's myself, but I think you could get away with the 175. I'd say the 175 is good for where you are now, but the 185 might be good for where you want to go. If your happy, or don't plan on becoming a full time ski-bum-rat, get the 175 and ride the crap outta them, if your looking to step up with 50+ days a season, go 185, and hang on till you get them down.

They come with the dull gray springs, not the bright shiny sliver springs. The Dull gray being the "new" one's you refer too. Next year all models wil come with the "stronger" springs, as well as a heel design that limits the turning of the heel piece you have to do.

Marker Baron Ski Binding

February 19, 2011

Depends, what is your DIN at now, and how much do you plan to ski on these either on area or off.
If you need the higher DIN, or are going to ski a LOT of days on these, or are really tough on your equipment, then maybe do Duke. If you don't need the higher DIN, or are not that abusive to your equipment, go Baron and save some $. I have both, my Dukes are on my Mantras with prob 180 days on both skis and bindings. They are beat to S#!T but still tour and ride great. My Barons are on some Blizzards I used to ride more (narrow/shorter ski for crappier ski conditions I used to ride) They have prob. about 60 days on them, and look brand freaking new, still ride great as well.

I am 165 lbs, 5'11" and ski with a DIN of 9 on Dukes (184 Mantras), Barons (176 Blizzard IQON), and Dynafits (184 Karhu Storm BCs).

Dynafit TLT Vertical ST Alpine Touring Binding

February 19, 2011

I'm pretty sure you could get the ST w/o the break and then order the 110 break separately from another store/site. Getting the 100 brake and bending it and saving the plastic stoppers is still a lot of ground to have to cover. I'm almost 100% positive that the 110 break can be used with this binding, but if you want to double check call Dynafit USA at Tel: (303) 444-0446.

Next Question: No clue! Sorry. I had a friend who just swapped his back and forth between two skis. He one with the Voile plate system, and the other ski was a KArhu drilled right into the ski. He would just back the screws out slowly, and thread them in slowly with some lock-tite. I'd say he swapped his dynafits back and forth several times doing this. Not sure I would, but he didn't have any issues with it.

Really, id say it comes down to this: do you want to stow your hood or not, and how much collar flap do you want (the Stinger really let you "turtle down" on the lifts in cold weather and bury your face in the cuff) and where do you want the zipper to zip up at?

SV should be comparable in both, in terms of warmth and longevity.

PS stinger has HUGE pit zips, nice when it's getting warmer.

Dynafit TLT Vertical ST Alpine Touring Binding

February 17, 2011

Sorry, some of this response is choped from my other responses, and some is 1st time use here:
THE NEW STUFF:
Yes? I know people who ride both the ST and FT as a primary inbounds binding. BTW, Andrew M. is not one of them. While the euros do this quite a bit, it is less common here in the US. I know it's way more weight, but the marker duke would take a lot more of a beating, but be more designed for what your taking about. Still if you want to ride the ST inbounds, I feel you can do so. They are not as elastic as "reg" bindings (duke included).

I guess the bigger question is how often do you intend to ski them, and how long do you want them to last for?

(the repeat)
The ST has the plate (well plastic or carbon fiber) that runs under it in the front and back. I know in the picture here the ST's look like they have a plastic plate instead of the FT carbon fiber, but those pieces on the ST don't actually connect when the binding is mounted. The FT plate is supposed to keep the ski slightly stiff under foot, which will help on area when your de-cambering the ski on some big ol bumps. Otherwise the ski might flex too much and you might release out.

That is the company line, so take it with a grain of salt. I know people how ski the 12 and say that is true, and people who say it is not true

BOTH ARE GREAT BINDINGS!!

I've skied both, don't really notice much of a difference, the FT might be a little more durable???

Dynafit TLT Vertical ST Alpine Touring Binding

February 17, 2011

I have only once (or twice) had to actually take out a tool (I always ski with a leather man) and dig ice out of the toe holes. I have also had to dig it out from under the toe piece on the binding, do carry something to do this with you, it won't happen all that often, but it will 1 out of every 30-50 days.

When you get your toe in swing the ski gently, and lift it up, just to make sure the toes are in place.

Boot insertion: Try angling one of the boot's hole in, with the other hole up in the air above the binding, then "rolling" the other hole down, and into place while applying pressure. Work well, even on places that suck for putting on skis.

February 12, 2011

im 5'11" 160 lbs, and the M fits me great, and even the S fits me fine, but is a little short in the mid section, but not the sleeves(those still fit fine), if that helps you at all.

So for your height/weight, I might say a L? Also, this down sweater is significantly trimmer than other down "coats" but still as warm, while it might depend on your outer shell, I would say if you can get a fleece under it, you should have no problem with this coat under the shell.

JJ's would save you a little bit of weight over s7, and I disagree with Andrew, same WOW factor on both of those, I've ridden them both back to back, both great skis. I'f your in the middle ground between S and L, get the S, that will save you some weight too, and make it so you have wayyyy less track behind the rear binding to pick up on each step when you tour.

Dynafit TLT Vertical ST Alpine Touring Binding

January 25, 2011

The Breaks:
They cost a little bit more, and extra because they are a different unit than a normal downhill break. There is quite a bit more going on with them. If you don't eat it all that often (not the case with me) maybe save the weight and $ and go with the leashes. If you tend to yard sale occasionally (like me) stick with the breaks.

I have only once (or twice) had to actually take out a tool (I always ski with a leather man) and dig ice out of the toe holes. I have also had to dig it out from under the toe piece on the binding, do carry something to do this with you, it won't happen all that often, but it will 1 out of every 30-50 days. It is really easy to get into and out of these bindings, I would practice at home a few times.

Sorry if this seems canned, it's a response I wrote for the same question on the FT page:
ST is 276g lighter per pair
ST Din is 5-10/ FT is 6-12
The FT is available in a wider 110cm brake, ST widest brake is 100cm

The brake difference can be eliminated by buying the 110 break separately, they (the 110 brake) is compatible with both bindings.

The "real" difference, not much, beyond the din. The weight is not a huge issue as the real weight savings with Dynafit come from not having to pick up the entire back end of your binding with every step as you have to with the Duke, baron, or Fritschi's

The ST has the plate (well plastic or carbon fiber) that runs under it from front to back. I know in the picture here the ST's look like they have a plastic plate instead of the FT carbon fiber, but those pieces on the ST don't actually connect when the binding is mounted. Your right on the edge of the large small overlay, i'd do small, the binding will be a little lighter, especially the part you have to pick up each time you take a step up-hill. The 30g's dosnt sound like much weight, but a lot of the would be in the extra piece coming off the back of the binding where you can move the rear end of the binding out, so as such, the 30g's will add up as you have to pick it up each and every time you take a step forward. (and it's 30gs a binding, so 60gs for the pair, or just over 2oz)

BCA has recently started shipping a new version of software for our Tracker2. The new software (version 4) addresses an issue discovered by the Jackson Hole ski patrol and alpine guides in a fleet of 182 beacons purchased in mid-November. Several of the Jackson Hole units have inadvertently entered our opticomm reprogramming mode. As a precautionary measure, we have replaced the Jackson fleet with version 4 units, which addresses this concern. We will analyze their original fleet to determine the extent of the problem.

The problem the units experienced caused them to occasionally go into opticomm mode inadvertently. Opticomm is a programming mode which is used to download new software through our optical communication window on the front of the unit. When the Tracker2 is in opticomm mode, it does not transmit. Normally this mode is activated by disconnecting and reconnecting one of the batteries while the unit is attached to our opticomm reprogramming accessory. However, it appears that this mode is occasionally being triggered by a buildup and discharge of static electricity.

f your Tracker2 occasionally reboots while it is off or in transmit mode, then it is experiencing a power interruption. This is always accompanied by an audible beep. (This should not be confused with the warning beeps that sound when the beacon is left in transmit or search mode for extended periods of time.) After a power interruption, the Tracker2 will usually return to the mode it was in: search, transmit, or off. While the issue of power interruption is not a major concern, we hope to determine if the issue of entering opticomm mode is significant enough to warrant a corrective action. In the meantime, we are offering free upgrades to our version 4 software. This software version provides additional safeguards against inadvertently entering opticomm mode.

To determine if you already have version 4 software, disconnect and reconnect one battery while the unit is off. After displaying “t2,” the unit will then display the software version. If the display reads “r04,” then you have the most recent software. This software has been included in all Tracker2 units shipped since late December.

We apologize for this complication and are working diligently to analyze and rectify the issue. If you would like to upgrade your Tracker2, please contact BCA at info@backcountryaccess.com or (303)417-1345 and we will provide you with a return authorization number. Thank you for your patience and support.

Marker Baron Ski Binding

January 11, 2011

I think the mounting pattern is different, due to the base plate, I me getting the griffons in a few days and will update then. Still, I come the the "you can drill a ski twice" school. so I say just move the binding forward or backward and re drill. Given that your boot center on these binding could change dramatically depending on where you boot sits in the adjustment of the rear heel piece I don't think this would be a huge issue. Also if the mounting points are different enough, you could still mount the binding with your boot center where you wanted and be ok.
