  • Stomping Grounds:

    American Midwest, Saudi Arabia
  • Bio:

I'm a runner, and a climber, and a backpacker, and I love all things outdoors. I live for the opportunity to get out into nature, and have been extremely blessed with the ability to be able to do so. Material Physics and Kinesiology fascinate me so I love trying out different kinds of gear and how they work with the human body.

My current gear setup for backpacking is:
    BD Hilight Tent
    Marmot Matterhorn 42 Pack
    Stoic Vamp 30 sleeping bag
    MSR Pocket Rocket Stove
    Backcountry 700mL Titanium pot
    BD Z-Poles

My favorite piece of gear is my RAB Vapour Rise softshell pants, as they saved my butt while climbing Mount Washington this past winter. Combine that with a Stoic Welder, and that is a killer clothing combination.

These are both supposedly two man tents, but the Stoic has about twice as much total area as the Hilight. It's really a one-man tent unless you're alpine climbing or something.

Julbo Nomad Sunglasses - Zebra Antifog Lens

Rating for this product: 5 May 22, 2012

I love 'em. They're great glasses, although the price isn't as good as it used to be. Perfect for anyone with a small face. The inserts do a great job of blocking reflected light from your face, just like they should.

Eagles Nest Outfitters SlackWire Slackline

May 15, 2012

They don't generally post weight limits on this stuff because it's climbing-spec webbing or stronger, meaning that the tensile strength is greater than 4500lbs. Seen videos with several people on a slackline and no problem. Maximum weight is also dependent on how long you set it up. A 60' setup will be able to take less weight than a 10' one.

The North Face Dock Tent 4-Person 3-Season

May 15, 2012

This isn't a tent by itself. It's designed to be added on to the TNF Docking Station tent, and so it won't stand up without the other. If you're backpacking, there are very few 4 person tents, and for ease of use's sake, you'd be much better served by going with two 2-man tents. I'd recommend the Kelty Salida 2 as a lightweight and inexpensive option. If there are three of you, the Black Diamond Skylight is a great option. In general, for cold weather, you tend to want something with less mesh, because it keeps the heat in, which is why the Salida and Skylight are both pretty good options. If there's going to be heavy snow, look at something with a four-season rating, like the Big Agnes Flying Diamond or MSR Dragontail. A three season tend can be crushed under heavy snow, so be careful.

Gibbon Slacklines Classic Slackline

May 15, 2012

It's just nylon, so it will degrade in the sun overtime. More importantly, because you're stretching it to get it taut, if you leave it up, you'll break down the nylon a lot faster. If you leave it set up in your yard all the time, it'll break down more quickly from sun and stretch. That said, it'll still last awhile, so it's not the end of the world to leave it set up.

La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Women's

May 15, 2012

I've tried both, and have the Scarpas. They are super similar boots in both materia and, now that the Sportivas are blue, looks. Pretty much the only difference is that the Scarpas have a wider footbed than the Sportivas. Other than that, it's slight color and material differences. Both are great companies, so if they fit, you're not going wrong with either.

Arc'teryx Rampart Pant - Women's

May 15, 2012

That's a difficult call, but I would go with the 10. I've had these for over a year now, and they tend to shrink a little in the wash, then re-expand as you where them, so they might be a little bit tight if you got the size eight. Your other option would be to order both and return the one that doesn't fit as well. Backcountry has discounted shipping labels, so it's only a few dollars more.

For what it's worth, these are pretty much the best pants ever. I've worn them close to 150 times in the past year, and they still look good.

Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket - Women's

May 15, 2012

Nope. It's a rain jacket, so it's meant to keep you dry, not warm. It's completely windproof, so in that regard, it could help you out as far as staying warm; however, you should probably be looking into dedicated insulating jackets. If you like Patagonia, look at the Nano Puff series of jackets, any of them will suffice. Some other good options for light insulation would be the North Face Zephyrus Pullover, Arc'teryx Atom LT, and Rab Xenon. None of these are fleece though, and fleece will save you money if that's an issue. It will just be slightly heavier and bulkier. If you're looking for fleece, try to get something that's either windproof or wind-resistant, because it'll keep you a lot warmer. I'd recommend something with Polartec Wind Pro, or Gore Windstopper, but there are lots of good things out there. The Stoic Breaker fleece would work pretty well, or the anything from the North Face Windwall series. Good luck!

Black Diamond Camalot C4's

April 26, 2012

You can totally clip into the thumb loop. Metal on metal is fine as long as a rope is in the system. The nylon sling does little to absorb shock, because it's so short, so it pretty much makes no difference. That said, unless you're aid climbing, clipping to the loop will make your cam walk without fail.

Blue Water Lightning Pro 9.7mm Climbing Rope

April 10, 2012

There won't be a tag on the rope most likely (although some have that information on the sticker at each end of the rope). What you can do is just hold it under a faucet. Any dry-treated rope will repel the water and not absorb it, just like a rain jacket, and a rope that's not treated will soak it up very quickly. I doubt that the company you bought it from would make you pay return shipping if they sent you the wrong product.

Sterling Velocity Sharma Dry Rope - 9.8mm

April 10, 2012

It'll work just fine. 60m is perfect for lead climbing. 70 and 80m ropes are generally for very specialized climbs on longer-than-usual pitches, which you probably won't need to do. That said, this isn't a particularly great rope. The 6 falls is quite low, even for a 9.8mm cord, and the 8.8kN fall force is pretty high. I'd recommend the Tendon Ambition 9.8 Complete Shield. 7.6kN impact force, and 9 falls. It's also cheaper than the Sterling rope.

Grivel G14 Crampon Spare Parts

"N/M" stands for Newmatic, a type of crampon that uses a rubber strap to connect to your boots. "Com" refers to Cramp-O-Matic, which uses a wire on the front to connect to the welt on your boot. The two front points (or monopoint, should you choose to configure it that way) are forged, and don't come with these spare parts.

The Aura is going to be a bit sturdier, but apart from that, there really isn't too much difference between the two of them. I dislike the hubbed pole design on tents larger than one-man, but that's personal opinion. The all-mesh top on the Aura would also be nice in summer.

The material will hold up to punctures just fine. The problem you will run into is all the straps. Because they get caught on stuff, some airlines will just cut them off. Osprey makes a canvas bag with handles on it for the purpose of checking your backpack on flights. I'd look into that if I were you, alongside this bag. Your other option is simply carryon. Black Diamond Skylight Tent: 3-Person 3-Season

March 26, 2012

I would disagree. People assume that because the Nanoshield fabric is single wall, you'll have issues with condensation. I've used a Hilight (smaller, similar tent from BD with the same fabric) for backpacking in 30F as well as 70F, and never had to deal with condensation on the inside. Nanoshield is easily twice as breathable as eVent or a comparable waterproof fabric, and is fantastic. This will also deal with wind better than the copper spur, whose ultralight materials will get torn apart in high winds.

Black Diamond Fitzroy Tent: 3-Person 4-Season

February 29, 2012

Totally depends on what you need the tent for. The Fitzroy is 3 person, Bombshelter is 4-person, Nammatj 2GT is 2-person. How many people do you need it for? Black Diamond/Bibler make pretty much the best mountaineering tents in the world, but Marmot makes some good ones, along with Mountain Hardwear. For a two person, I'd recommend the Black Diamond Ahwahnee, or Marmot Alpinist. For three, the Fitzroy is great, along with the Mountain Hardwear EV3, and for four people, there is nothing better than the BD Bombshelter. I have no experience with North Face tents, but I hear their new single wall ones are pretty nice. You'll be good with any of these. They're built to last by reputable companies.
