FlyLow Gear B.A.Puffy Coat - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 11, 2010

I thought this puffy would be overkill but its holds strong in -20 windy days when you can tuck inside the massive hood and keep everything out. The waterproof zippers are clutch on fluffy days. You can also wear the jacket around town and on warmer days with the pit zips open. I know its a small detail (Flylow's products have alot of these) but theres a little cover that goes over the main zipper allowing you to tuck your face in your jacket without that frozen zipper rubbing on your face. I really do use this jacket 90% of my season, great lightweight option but doesn't pack down like a down puffy would.

MSR Packtowl Personal Towels

MSR Packtowl Personal Towels

Rating for this product: 5 September 20, 2010

Soft, shammy type feel but gets the job done, theres always a dry square somewhere on it. Packs up very small - even the XL.The clips nice to hang it on branches to dry as well. Dry's fast and is definitely worth the cost to eliminate a big bulky towel, or drying yourself on your shirts.

Sea To Summit eVent Compression Dry Sack

Sea To Summit eVent Compression Dry Sack

Rating for this product: 5 September 20, 2010

I've used this sack for my sleeping bag and clothes in torrential downpours, and they've even taken a swim in the colorado river, everything was still bone dry when I finally retrieved it too. Im the kind of person that wants to make sure my important gear stays 100% perfect, I trust this bag and will continue to buy them for my gear. When you look in my pack you normally see about 3-4 of these, tend to keep my food and cookware in one also, keeps the pack clean and you can just rinse the sack out if it gets dirty.

prAna Axiom Denim Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 20, 2010

I bought a pair of these a couple weeks ago and I'm going to have to buy 2 more pairs. The gusseted crotch makes for easy heel hooks and just makes the pants fit better. The 32's waist runs a 32 inseam also.
Think I'll have to buy a brown pair too.

prAna Ninebark Reversible Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 20, 2010

Stretchy, comfy and big cuffs. Very relaxed shirt but is great for a night out or heading out to the crag. Pretty warm too.
Not really sure on my thoughts about the reversible, seams show on opposite side, prefer to wear with stripes out.

SmartWool PhD Outdoor Light Crew Sock

September 20, 2010

I wouldn't use these by themselves in a heavier duty boot. For trail running in ankle cut shoes, usually more venting and breathable these are great and I swear by them, I cant even wear cotton socks anymore and you really don't need the rubbing of another poly pro liner for everyday stuff, and the "support zone's" really hold the sock in place and comfy. If your planning on wearing a boot or something a little more heavy duty I would always throw on a thin poly pro like Phil mentions, just more comfortable and moisture wicking. just my 2cents

Speedy, Wet & Fun

Tributary 13.0 SB Raft

Rating for this product: 5 September 19, 2010

Spent the summer of 09 guiding these out on Clear Creek, CO.... the boat is a blast, small, fun & maneuverable. Although the boat is self bailing the bladder in the floor fills up and really adds some speed.
This boat is by far faster than the NRS Otters or the Highsides. The trib almost guarantee's customer satisfaction because of the splash factor/ low side walls.
From a guide standpoint I wish there was a little bit more space in the rear compartment, especially with a full load of custy's. Not much room for extra paddles and feet, and the lacing that holds the floor together tends to tear chaco'd feet up. Better with booties on if you jam your feet under the thwarts n front of you.

Petzl Corax Harness - Men's

Petzl Corax Harness - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 19, 2010

The Corax is excellent, pretty comfortable even after falls and no pinching. Bought the size 2 just incase I wear it over thicker pants and jackets in the winter months. Fits great and can crank down tight (5"10 - 175lb) even with minimal gear in the summer months. The gear loops are small and tight to the harness but they are durable and can hold quite a bit of gear. Bottom Line: Comfortable, Durable and Safe. Adjustment straps are great too,

Deuter Futura 32 Backpack - 1950cu in

September 19, 2010

They both fit great, and I have to say I love the pack, the suspension system, pockets, storage, zippers and the hydration setup, my one little gripe actually regard the water bottles, you do need to take the pack off to get to them and it's also kind of difficult to get to the mini pocket on the right side strap (camera, snacks etc).

La Sportiva Miura VS Vibram XS Edge Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 September 19, 2010

Great fit and a fun break in period, actually a soft inside and the P3 really helps keep the foot in shape on tiny footholds and smears.
I sized down and they stretched to a perfect size. One Fifty is painful but the quality and performance is worth it.

Good day skinning/hiking pack

DAKINE Heli Pro 20L Winter Backpack - 1200cu in

DAKINE Heli Pro 20L Winter Backpack - 1200cu in

Rating for this product: 5 September 19, 2010

Great bag with plenty of space for some lunch and extra clothes when out in the backcountry. I can usually fit my skins and all of my avy protection gear as well. The straps secure really well and fit well around a jacket. The goggle pocket is nice too, keep a case in there with some extra lens's too. The waist straps also help balance out added weight better than most touring backpacks on the market.

DAKINE Heli Pro 20L Winter Backpack - 1200cu in

September 19, 2010

I've been using the black diamond deploy 3 shovel (excellent and durable metal btw), and the Super Tour 265 Probe. Like Tyler said there is no dedicated tool compartment, but this gear does fit well on the bag and if you use the attached mini bungie's you can get the shovel to sit on the outside of the pack really nicely. There's also a mesh compartment in the bag with a spot for a bladder.

Superman on the Forehead

Black Diamond Icon Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 September 19, 2010

This headlamp is so bright it really isn't to bad setting up camp in the dark anymore. You have to leave it on low setting in the tent because it glares back at you. I use this as my only headlamp, swear by it and its never failed me. Ok it's a little heavier than other models on the market but its distributed well around your head and after a while you forget its there. BD = $

In the picture - The icon is on the far right and on low setting.

Perfection does Exist

Smith Variant Brim Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 September 19, 2010

I never thought I'd say I enjoy wearing a helmet until I put the variant on. The helmet breathes great, has excellent padding but is low profile and doesn't even feel like your wearing anything. My helmets already taken a couple good dingers, ice and some hard ground. I'm glad I bought I helmet and definitely allows you to push yourself a little bit harder. High Recommendations +++

One of the Best Setups out there....

Smith I/OS Interchangeable Optic Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 September 19, 2010

Great range of vision and no fogging issues. The IOS is a phenomenal setup and the Sensor Mirror Extra lens is great in most lighting situations, struggle a little in low light, and garbage at night. The frame is pretty durable but softer material and the changing the lens is simple, two snaps out two snaps in. The porex filter on the lens actually works too and helps keep them from fogging. Just make sure never to touch the inside of the lens with anything. The goggle also fits very well with Smith's Variant Brim Helmet and theres no cold or exposed spots around goggle. Excellent Product.

Ultra Lite and Gets it Done

Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 4 September 19, 2010

Lightweight, Packable, Comfy and Durable. I've spent about 25 days on the Z-lite this year and its served me well. Acts great as a camp seat or mini kitchen chair. The pad flattens out nice and is pretty comfortable on grass, dirt or leaves. I tend not to use it during the winter because it doesn't insulate as well as an inflatable. This also fits pretty good on the side of packs with the tensioning straps. When I'm going light I take the Z-lite. I can't give it 5 stars because of how thin it is, but it gets the job done and is light enough to warrant not sleeping on the hard ground for the night.

Great Protection, Tons of Space

The North Face Big Fat Frog 24 Bx Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

The North Face Big Fat Frog 24 Bx Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 September 18, 2010

Spent about 25 nights in this so far this year. By far the best tent I have ever owned. Extremely sturdy DAC poles and goes up quick. The huge open doorway makes it easy to move around items stored in the vestibule. There are plenty of pockets for storage and plenty of space inside, comfortably fits 2 5"10 people or 1 and a 45lb dog. Ceiling height is good, can sit up easily and move around without hitting my head.

Which brings me to the vestibule storage. SOO much space, I took this with me for Ride the Rockies 2010 for 7 nights and fit two huge duffels and two road bikes (front wheel off) in the vestibule with a little fan dangling.Because of the mesh the tent breathes great and has held up great against wind, rain and snow.

Although it is a little on the hefty side, split between two people makes it just over 3lbs each. Probably a little overkill as a solo tent but my lab follows me on most trips so it works out ok.The fly is very thin sil nylon but stretches well and really keeps out the elements.Like the other posts below I have also had the same issues with condensation but nothing extreme that detracts from the product. My only other little gripe is it's a little to easy to drag dirt and stones into your sleeping area because there's no floor to the vestibule.Overall - excellent tent which I use for all 4 seasons, easy set up and breakdown and plenty of space. Very comparable to MTN Hardwears 2 person tents but with the added vestibule.

Excellent Replacement

Thule Peloton Bike Mount

Thule Peloton Bike Mount

Rating for this product: 5 September 18, 2010

Bought this model to replace my broken echelon mount and I like this model so much more. The locking system is excellent and I have no problems trusting it to hold my road or mtn bike. The rear wheel holder is a little flimsy but does its job to hold the wheel in place. Very quick load & unload time and extremely secure with the fork holders, much better than a clip or clamp rubbing the paint or decals off your bike.

Started out Ok.

Thule Echelon Roof Bike Mount

Thule Echelon Roof Bike Mount

Rating for this product: 2 September 18, 2010

I usually swear by Thule gear and have bought much from them in the past. The rack worked great for a while until it started dragging on a little plastic piece on the tightening knob. Keeping a road bike on the rack mean's tightening the echelon a little bit tighter than its supposed to go and overtime wore down Thules ETC system so it no longer locks in the forks. I switched to a pelaton system and like it but will probably move to the Rocky Mt's model next time around.

4 (FRNT) You East Coasters

4FRNT Skis MSP Ski

4FRNT Skis MSP Ski

Rating for this product: 4 September 18, 2010

Definitely not a one ski quiver but what it does it does very well. Pretty stiff underfoot but softer tips and tails make them a joy in the terrain park, and they shred groomers pretty well with no chatter, edge wears away pretty quick and the top sheet chips away over time, nothing that damages the ski to much but definitely ruins your graphics, guess this is what we get for sandwich construction though.
The thin waist doesn't do much if you get a fresh dump and tends to bog you down. Overall I really enjoyed skiing these out on the east coast, super playful, supportive in the park, great on groomers and hold their own on vertical skating rinks. Did alright out west on groomers but struggled in the crud and anything over ankle deep (obviously). I would buy these again but only if I moved back east. They just don't get it done out west.

Good 3 Season Bivy

Mountain Hardwear Conduit SL Bivy

Mountain Hardwear Conduit SL Bivy

Rating for this product: 3 September 18, 2010

The bivy's been great for spring, summer and fall weather, even with a good downpour. I love the extra long zippers and the cinch cord works pretty well but it would be nice with a mesh face cover for bugs. The bivy has treated me well but I refuse to use it in the winter because it doesn't breath as well as the gore or event fabrics, and I've woken up with a wet and cold bag on some pretty chilly winter mornings (-10 - 0 degrees). Overall good product, pretty light and packable and good in 3 seasons but the conduit just isn't breathable enough for the winter months.

Excellent for the Basics

MSR Pocket Rocket Stove

MSR Pocket Rocket Stove

Rating for this product: 5 September 18, 2010

The PocketRocket is extremely light, packable and simple. Its a lightweight on fuel (except in the winter) "used as backup". The only issue I have had is its not great at controlling the heat, either really hot and on, or off. Its really quick at boiling water (even at elevation 11,000+) but when it comes to cooking food the heat isn't dissipated enough and results in cold and burn spots spread through out stews, oatmeal, etc. For minimalist excursions and limited hot food, "rice, chili, etc" you never even know that your carrying this with you. I also usually use the jetboil mini fuels for 1-2 day trips instead of the larger MSR canisters.

Excellent Protection

Metolius Stomp Crash Pad

Metolius Stomp Crash Pad

Rating for this product: 4 September 18, 2010

This pad is everything you need when you head out for the day. It's very thick compared to other models on the market but that really makes it a more viable option. This pad is a great choice if your landings a little sketchy or you have some rocks buried in your landing. The hooks work well and haven't worn much. The pad still feels useful after many falls and is a pretty comfortable carry to your local spot. The only downside to this model is it doesn't have the "fold in half" seat option, but for a little less cash then competitors, it gets the job done and protects your ankles.
