BD knows how to make packs!

Black Diamond Speed 40 Backpack - 2319-2563cu in

Black Diamond Speed 40 Backpack - 2319-2563cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 9, 2012

Streamlined and simple. Way good.

There are only 2 things I would change on it:
1: The clip for the rope strap is in this really little pocket. When your pack is full, it is super hard to get your fingers in there to clip or un-clip the rope strap. Add 2 or three inches to the webbing that the clip is on!
2: I would like to see reinforced ski straps like on the Mission 50. This would prevent the side straps from getting beat up when hauling your skis in an A-frame.

Both of the things I would like to see changed are super minor and I still give this pack 5 stars.

One tool fits all

Petzl Quark Ice Tool

Petzl Quark Ice Tool

Rating for this product: 4 April 24, 2012

Great as a one tool fits all solution; from vertical ice to long alpine climbs.
Only thing that will most likely eventually break on you are the adjustable-height grip rests. These need a re-design. If you hit them on a bulge of ice, they lever and crack at the bolt. This doesn't affect the integrity of the tool, just the grip rest.

Great for the small sizes

Metolius Master Cam

Metolius Master Cam

Rating for this product: 4 April 24, 2012

I prefer these in their small sizes. Narrow head and the single stem doesn't get in the way of small constrictions below the placement like a u-stem TCU can.

Huge Upgrade

Outdoor Research Alibi II Glove

Outdoor Research Alibi II Glove

Rating for this product: 5 April 24, 2012

These are such an upgrade over my heavy gloves and or my liners for ice climbing. Your hands will definitely get cold at times in these things, but they grip so well. I just always have a pair of heavy gloves for belaying tucked in my shell or clipped to the back of my harness and switch to those when I finish a pitch.

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 2560-4395cu in

Rating for this product: 5 April 24, 2012

I have had these bags for years and they hold up to everything I throw at them. The biggest decision you need to make is which size[es] you need!

The Only Insole I Use

Superfeet Trim-To-Fit Green Insole

Superfeet Trim-To-Fit Green Insole

Rating for this product: 5 April 24, 2012

Great support for my foot. The arch is nice and high (unlike most stock insoles which are flat). The cupped heel isolates my foot's natural cushion right under the heel. None of that gimmicky and wobbly gel. Great for day to day use, running shoes, and my ski boots. These insoles rock.

My favorite for racking my cams. Color coded, smooth gate, and enough room to clip runners/ropes!

#4

Trango Big Bro

Trango Big Bro

Rating for this product: 5 April 24, 2012

I got the #4 Big Bro to expand my gear range. At its smallest it is like a tipped out #6 cam (BD or Wild Country). Sometimes it is just what you need!

Tiny but Trustworthy

CAMP USA Nano 23 Carabiner - Six Pack

CAMP USA Nano 23 Carabiner - Six Pack

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2010

These things are so small and lightweight, you don't feel bad bringing a few extra for that remote climb. Great for making alpine draws with dyneema runners. They are a bit small but I do not really notice it even when anxiously clipping gear. Light is right!

From Finger Locks to Body Jams

Black Diamond Camalot C4's

Black Diamond Camalot C4's

Rating for this product: 5 October 21, 2010

These things rock from finger to body sizes. They go in smooth and don't walk away. Plus, it's easier to get an over cammed Camalot out than any other cam. Confidence inspiring gear keeps me in the vertical world!
