The North Face Chesterton Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

The North Face Chesterton Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2005

Great for my height (I’m 6'2"), in size large it hits me mid way at my hips and the sleeves hit at my thumb knuckles (this is really nice for taller guys). It fits very close to the body but seems to be built for climbers because the seaming in the shoulder area allows nicely for broad muscular shoulders which is great for me and has always been an issue I had with other fleece shirts. It’s very warm for its light weight and moves well with activity. I love putting it on during cold wet mornings, it really warms you up. A+ to North Face on this one (in my book).

Solid pants and long enough for 6ft 2in guys.

Patagonia Stretch Element Pant - Men's

Patagonia Stretch Element Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 4, 2005

I’m 6ft 2in and these work well for my height. I bet these would work for guys up to 6ft 4in. I’ve had these for a year now and have used them in rain, snow, extreme cold, and combinations of any or all during various activities. They do actually stretch with extreme movement very nicely. I can easily fit a pair of heavy weight fleece liner pants on underneath for extreme cold temps, and I can comfortably wear the stretch elements alone during fair weather rain storms. For rainy weather I roll the attached inner gaiters up a few inches which allow the pant legs to hang freely around my boots. For deep snow I attach 2/8th-inch thick nylon string (not included) to the loops on the bottom of the gaiters then secure the gaiters to the soles of my boots and close the fasteners around the base of the boot. This works well with no restricted movement and keeps the snow out very effectively.

Too short for 6ft 2in guys

Patagonia Down Vest - Men's

Patagonia Down Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 1, 2005

I’m 6ft 2in and this vest was just too short for me which really surprised me because I’ve always had good experiences with Patagonia sizing. It needs another 2in for my height, so if you are 6ft or less than you’ll probably dig it. Also, the collar hits me in my chin every time I bring my head down or turn to look to my side. It’s nice looking but this vest doesn’t fit the bill (for me). Patagonia is a solid brand though. Overall, I highly recommend their clothing. I’m wearing a Patagonia Puffball Vest right now which I’ve owned for over a year now and I love it. The Puffball is not as heavy weight as this vest that I’m writing this review for but it’s pretty warm and fits my height very well.

Everything about it rocks...

Marmot Mountain Down Jacket - Men's

Marmot Mountain Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 1, 2005

Extremely light weight (I got a large). It feels like a super comfortable down sleeping bag. The hood closes nicely with plenty of space to see out and it doesn’t pull on my head even when drawn tight. The length, I’m 6'2" and it hits me just past my hips. It’s a cross breed between a jacket and parka which is awesome. One of my favorite features is an internal snap seal “skirt” (sort of like a kayak skirt) which can be snapped around your waist inside the jacket so you don’t have to pull the draw strings shut on the bottom to keep the cold air out (though of course you can if you want...). It fits really well all the way through especially with active movement. I put a pack on and it still feels great with lots of freedom. The re-enforced elbows and shoulders feel like Teflon but more flexible. Lastly, it looks really cool (I got the blue which is a bit darker than the picture presents).

This parka is a monster!

The North Face McMurdo Parka - Men's

The North Face McMurdo Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 28, 2005

Too much for me in fact. Too warm and too heavy. In my opinion it’s not good for outdoor activity where weight and overheating are issues. I swear it seems like it weighted over 5 pounds (size large). I compared it with a military N3-B snorkel parka I have, and it was twice as heavy if not more. With all my gear on and for long durations that’s just too much additional weight and heat... If you live in a very cold windy city where you’ll be using the parka as your primary heating source, or you are going to be standing around a lot and want to keep toasty warm then believe me this parka will make you happy. However if you’re going to use it for any kind of hardcore cold weather activity you might want look for something a little more light weight or just lighter. One more thing, I have a North Face Gore-Tex shell that is going on its 11th year and it looks and feels like new, so if you buy this parka and you dig it then you’ll be real happy with North Face.

Only for EXTREME cold weather.

The North Face Himalayan Mitten

The North Face Himalayan Mitten

Rating for this product: 4 February 21, 2005

30 mph winds, -15F temps and my hands were sweating hot after hiking through the snow for only 10 minutes, I actually had to take the mittens off and let my hands cool down. I couldn’t imagine wearing them for long winter hikes in anything above -15 degrees. I love North Face and these are well made mittens but they are way WAY too warm. Only for extreme cold "IMO".

Mountain Hardwear Chugach Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Chugach Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 21, 2005

These are cool pants and seemed nice and warm but I am 6'2 and the legs only came down to the top of my ankle high hiking boots. I could picture "wise guys" pointing at me a saying "Where's the flood?"... The sizing chart for these pants is wrong, I measured the inseam and it came to about 30 3/4 inches... Patagonia is the only company I have found so far that makes their pants a little extra long which is great for taller men.

Excellent active winter pants!

Patagonia Stretch Element Pant - Men's

Patagonia Stretch Element Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 21, 2005

They are very comfortable, plenty long enough (I am 6'2”), and they really do stretch with movement. I easily fit a pair of 200 weight fleece pants underneath and have been very warm and comfortable in the down to -15 degree temps with heavy winds. There are loops on the bottom of the gaiters where I attached a simple nylon string to secure the gaiters snuggly around the bottoms of my winter boots while hiking in deep snow. No snow or cold has gotten in and I couldn't be happier with these pants. Worth every penny.

This jacket is amazing.

Patagonia R4 Jacket - Men's

Patagonia R4 Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 21, 2005

I wear it every day both in the house and outside. Ridiculously comfortable! I am 6'2 with a long torso and this jacket (size large) fits me like a warm glove. It stretches with movement too. What is unreal is that I have been wearing this jacket (with properly insulated winter pants, boots and hat) in down to -15F temps with no shell and only two light layers below. I have worn only a tee shirt underneath in 25F weather. It’s a great jacket. It keeps the warm in and the cold wind out very effectively with minimal weight. Then I walk in the house take my winter stuff off and put the jacket back on... It doesn’t over heat... I was skeptical of paying the high price for what seemed like just a windproof fleece jacket but I can honestly tell you that it’s worth every penny. It is the most versatile jacket I have ever owned, and damn good looking too.
