Stomping Grounds:
Upstate SC, Northeast GA, & Western NC mountains. -
Bio:
I work all week to pay for weekend adventures! I guess my motto is "life's too short for long term goals".
I don't like being surrounded by people who take things (and themselves) too seriously, and hitting a trail is a great way to leave that element far behind. Plus the folks you meet in the woods are generally far easier to get along with, right?
I try to take 2 or 3 long trips a year... there's nothing like having to run back through your notes just to figure out what day it is!
I absolutely love the southern Appalachians. The sense of history here is amazing, everything feels so ancient. The little pocket of upstate SC where I live has such a high level of bio-diversity that even Rudy Mancke himself couldn't name all of the plants! (Rudy, I say that with the utmost respect, you're a genius!) In fact, Rosman NC (15 miles from here) was listed by the Audubon Society as recording the highest amount of annual precipitation in the southeast... over 80 inches per year! That combined with the abundance of waterfalls & hardwood forests produce the classic blue haze and inspired the Cherokee to name the 2,000ft escarpment between SC & NC "The Blue Wall".
I'm a 3-season hiker, summer here is just too brutal. When it's hot you can find me exploring Jocassee in my kayak or fishing & swimming in one of the local rivers.
My area of the world is a little-known paradise... and that suits me just fine!

Garmin eTrex Venture HC GPS
June 30, 2010
I'm a GPS virgin looking for a unit to guide me safely along the 111-mile Keys Paddling Trail. Would this Garmin serve me well or should I be looking in a higher price range?
