Stoic Somnus 30 Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

October 19, 2011

This isn't really the "gear in action" per-se, but it came in the mail, and I can't wait to use it! I'll probably have to wait until spring at this point, sadly. Will post a review then.

Perfect

Marmot Kompressor Plus Backpack - 1100cu in

Marmot Kompressor Plus Backpack - 1100cu in

Rating for this product: 5 January 17, 2012

The other reviewers are forgetting one very important thing: this is a 12-oz pack. No, it's not super-heavy duty, indestructible. It's not super-heavy anything. It's way light. I love it. I strap my snowshoes on the outside using the compression straps. I carry water, layers, nom-nom's, and a camera. I bag 12,000 and 13,000 ft mts in winter with it. It's a no nonsense, minimal pack, and that's exactly what it is. It's perfect.

Great casual wear

Stoic Welder Hi Softshell Jacket - Men's

Stoic Welder Hi Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 13, 2011

I bought this piece for use just as casual wear (I'm not big into soft-shells for the backountry, I stick to down and gore-tex) and it's great! It's solid and looks good. It is warm enough for walking around town in winter, although I haven't worn it in cold temps yet. It did keep me dry in a downpour while I was walking -- I was probably only in the rain for 20 minutes, but it was POURING and the water all beaded off like crazy. I'll update my review when I get to put it to some cold-weather use.

It is nicely cut -- athletic but can fit layers under.

The only choice

Nathan HPL #008 Race Vest

Nathan HPL #008 Race Vest

Rating for this product: 5 September 19, 2011

I knew I got the right hydration system when I took it on my long weekend run in the Boulder mountains. Not only did it feel like I wasn't carrying anything, with a seemingly perfectly engineered suspension that prevents bouncing and distributes the weight perfectly, but every other runner that I saw out that day was wearing the same damn thing! I probably saw ten runners, and nine of them were wearing this vest!

I've heard the bigger version is also great, but 50oz is more than enough for me, so I chose this one.

No compromise pad

Stoic LTWT Sleeping Pad - Short

Rating for this product: 5 September 19, 2011

This pad rocks! Comparable in weight to foam pads, but packs down to nothing. I've been through a lot with this pad, and it hasn't let me down! Well, except when I put a big cut in it with a sharp point sticking out of my cooking-kit, but a little duct tape saved the day. If you want to get a sleeping pad, and you like to go light, but you don't want a bulky foam pad dangling off the outside of your pack, this pad is the best choice.

See photo below: This definitely wasn't the pad's fault! Taped up and good to go! Turns out my patching job was a little leaky (pad gets soft by morning) so I'm going to get the same pad again! Nothing beats the Stoic LTWT Pad!
