  • Stomping Grounds:

    Northen Sierra, Santa Cruz Mountains
  • Bio:

Snowboarding is my biggest passion and trying to get as many days in as possible since I'm cube bound. Splitboarding and hiking are also excellent ways to spend time in the mountains. I'm trying to climb more too and am slowly working towards my goal of doing trad climbing. When I'm not doing that stuff I also like to mountain bike, ride my motorcycle or just geek it out in front of the computer.

I just love the feeling of being free when you're in the alpine and am always pursuing that.

Stoic Luft Down Sweater - Men's

Stoic Luft Down Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 30, 2010

I have to preface this review with the fact that I got a smokin' deal on this jacket so the was value is absolutely incredible.

Stoic stuff seems to fit me (6' 190 lbs, long torso bought the L) very well which, to me, makes or breaks clothing. It can have great features etc. but if it doesn't fit me it isn't worth it to me.

The sewn-through baffles are well filled with down except maybe at the top by the shoulders but that's not where a ton of your heat output is, right? Also with a pack on it's irrelevant as well.

I haven't noticed a difference in warmth between the down baffles and primaloft insulated areas either so that seems to have been well executed.

The fleece lining at the chin and in the pockets isn't the softest at first but it works fine.

The zipper tends to always get caught up when it hits the chest pocket which is a little annoying but not a huge deal.

I like the stretch cuff gaiter things on the sleeves but if you have gloves on and biggish hands you won't get your hands through them but I think it's better than a normal elastic cuff and I have to admit it, it makes the jacket look cooler. :)

Also the pertex shell is impressive (at least while new) for shedding light rain and the odd drops here and there for a bit. It also seems to breath fine.

Warmth is difficult to quantify as everyone is different etc. but I am pretty happy with it down to 35 F with nothing but a t-shirt underneath well fed, well rested and not moving.

It has a few stray and weird threads but overall the quality seems as good as anything these days. No down leakage yet either which is impressive to me.

Get it on sale and I think you'll be happy with it!

Weird seams in the armpits

Stoic Merino 150 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Stoic Merino 150 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 December 30, 2010

I really liked this shirt because it had a nice athletic fit on me, good torso and sleeve length and not too baggy (6', 190 lbs with a long torso). However the shirt had seams running right under the armpits.

I could have probably ignored it and gotten used to the rubbing of the seams there but I felt it was a pretty stupid design. For the money I would expect a different more comfortable pattern. I guess I'm alone on this one!

I thought the material was quite high quality wool and not too itchy. What can you expect? It's not a synthetic.

In the end I had to return it because of the armpit seams.

Awesome with a minor finishing problem

CAMP USA Orbit Screw Gate Carabiner

CAMP USA Orbit Screw Gate Carabiner

Rating for this product: 4 July 23, 2010

Light and smooth. 1" tied slings don't sit so well in them but that's the price you pay for light! Also when I first got these (I bought 2) they both had a small metal sliver stuck to the hinge on the gate that poke med. I had to pull it off with needle nose pliers. Then they were great!

Same as everyone else - weird fit!

CAMP USA Pulse Ski and Climbing Helmet

CAMP USA Pulse Ski and Climbing Helmet

Rating for this product: 2 July 1, 2010

I can't really fairly rate it since it just simply didn't fit my head. But like many others this helmet seems great on paper but neither the size 1 or 2 would fit my head right. I ended up with a BDel Tracer which seemed much more comfortable for my head shape but sacrificed the skiing rating.

Inexpensive but not worth it to me

Wild Country Oxygen Keylock Carabiner

Wild Country Oxygen Keylock Carabiner

Rating for this product: 2 July 1, 2010

I know these are inexpensive 'biners but I did not like the action on either of the two I got. The fit of the gate hinge pin I thought had more slop than other inexpensive carabiners like the BD Light D (I know it's not he same shape but it's comparable in price and function to some degree). The closing "snap" from it too wasn't as strong as I prefer.

The bottom line is that yes it's an inexpensive carabiner but I believe that it feels a little too "cheap".
