Nice fit, good helmet

Grivel Salamander Helmet

Rating for this product: 4 December 31, 2010

I've ordered a number of different helmets to try, and this one fit the bill. It's not perfect, but it had enough good things to make me decide that this was the one to keep.

Pros: securely fits my head, straps are comfortable and adjustable and the wheel at the back allows me to easily tighten after it's too warm for a hat beneath. It is not as high profile/stands up high from my head as some of the other helmets I've tried. The stickers come off, too. I'm thinking of grabbing some paint and making a cool design of my own since it is a bit on the plain side.

Cons: It is not a super lightweight helmet, although I don't really notice that it's on when I'm wearing it. I'm a bit worried that it will be too warm on a hot summer day as it's black and not as well ventilated as some of the other types.

Overall, it fit the best and was comfortable for me.

La Sportiva Katana Rock Climbing Shoe - Women's Discontinued Rubber

November 30, 2010

I got these shoes in April of 2010 and love them. My feet are a little on the narrow to average side and I find that the heel actually rides up a little bit too snugly around the top of my achilles for my liking. Interestingly there's a bit of extra room in the heel pocket itself though! They're a great fit for performance but, like most good performance shoes, they're too tight to be worn for a long day. Love the shoe though and would buy another pair if they were on sale. Looks like resoling for now!

Disappointing purchase

Wild Country Alpine Shield Climbing Helmet

Wild Country Alpine Shield Climbing Helmet

Rating for this product: 2 November 29, 2010

After three months of using the helmet I noticed that the side strap was breaking. The quick-adjust slides in the back broke off within a month of weekend usage making it difficult to move back and forth for sizing with a hat on beneath the helmet. The fit and the flexibility for ice climbing were big pluses, but this will be going back to the manufacturer. Three months of occasional use is far too short of a lifespan for the cost. Sadly, I would recommend taking a pass on this equipment.

Petzl Altios Climbing Helmet- 2010

Petzl Altios Climbing Helmet- 2010

Rating for this product: 2 April 21, 2010

I purchased this helmet without having tried it on first (mistake number 1!). The fit is not comfortable for me at all. It places a lot of pressure on the occiput at the back of my head with the rear support. When I tighten it, it pulls my hair. The straps are difficult to adjust over the ears. Overall I'm very disappointed in it. I'll be looking for a new helmet and hoping that I can sell it to someone whose head it fits better than my own....
