I'm a kayak fisherman who has recently endeavored on kayak camping trips, through the ADKs, the Catskills and other areas. I have acquired a bit of gear in the process, and have reviewed quite a bit. Unfortunately, not all of it is on this site. Check my blog at http://kayakfishandcamp.wordpress.com.

Extra layer when you need it

NRS HydroSilk Pant

NRS HydroSilk Pant

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2011

I use these pants periodically as a layering system under a drysuit or under paddling pants. But when it's really hot I just skip them entirely.

NRS HydroSilk Rash Guard - Long-Sleeve - Men's

NRS HydroSilk Rash Guard - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2011

I use this top most of the time I"m on the water. Except in the cooler months, when it becomes part of a layering system to keep my core warm. This top also provides decent sun protection and freedom of movement.

Summer paddling attire

NRS Hydrosilk Rash Guard Top - Short-Sleeve - Men's

NRS Hydrosilk Rash Guard Top - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2011

I wear this as part of a layering system when heading out on cooler day, but in the summer, this is the only layer. I tend to wear the long sleeve for sun protection, but the shorty is good when you jest need some color. This will not keep you warm if it is windy on the water.

Chinook is fishing for PFD

NRS Chinook Personal Flotation Device

NRS Chinook Personal Flotation Device

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2011

I love this life vest for its capacity, styling and comfort. Let's face it, you're not going to wear a PFD that is uncomfortable, so get one that is. I've been using mine for years without issue. Always wear your life vest!

NRS Boaters Gloves

NRS Boaters Gloves

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2011

I use these in the warmer months to prevent blisters and offer a bit of sun protection for my hands. With a UPF rating of 50, these gloves are the best when it's warm out. I also like the snot patch and the leather palms.

Drip, drip, drip

Katadyn Vario Dual Technology MicroFilter

Katadyn Vario Dual Technology MicroFilter

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2011

I used this filter in the ADKs on a kayak camping trip and it served us well. No sickness, nothing. The water tasted great - fresh. I need to learn more about the calibration of the ceramic filter, as I could have processed more water in the same amount of time. But I love this filter. I love how it screws directly onto nalgene bottles and the provided accessories prepare you for maintenance and varying situations.

GSI Outdoors Pivot Spoon

GSI Outdoors Pivot Spoon

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2011

I like the pivot design, the durable construction and real utensil feel. The plastic won't damage non-stick coatings, and the bowl of the spoon is large enough to serve as a ladle in a pinch.

Coleman Cool Zephyr Ceiling Fan with Light

Coleman Cool Zephyr Ceiling Fan with Light

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2011

It's great having a fan on car camping trips, even in the cooler months. I use the fan to recirculate heat from a propane heater in my tent prior to getting in. It's like central air. The two light functions and two speed settings make this a versatile fan.

Sea To Summit eVent Compression Dry Sack

Sea To Summit eVent Compression Dry Sack

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2011

I got the medium and small bags for my sleeping bag and clothes on kayak camping trips. Thinking of picking up a few more for other stuff. E-vent material is nice, purges air and keeps things dry.

Big River, heavy duty

Sea To Summit Big River Dry Bag

Sea To Summit Big River Dry Bag

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2011

I love these bags. The loops and rings help to provide anchor points. Definitely keeps everything you put in them dry. I got the 13L for kitchen stuff and the 65L for a portage pack. Heavy-duty materials mean these bags will last.

Alpha set, forget the rest

Sea To Summit Alpha Light Utensils

Sea To Summit Alpha Light Utensils

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2011

I got the Alpha set and I like individual cutlery rather than fumbling with a spork/foon nonsense. The holes in the set tend to collect food goo, but otherwise a solid, durable set of cutlery. The caribiner is nice to keep it all together. Also, I believe S to S also sells a cutlery bag/tent peg bag for the set.

Hot or Cold, get this mug

Sea To Summit Delta Insulated Mug

Sea To Summit Delta Insulated Mug

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2011

This cup serves as a bowl and measuring cup, making it do double duty, keeping hot stuff hot or cold stuff cold. It does not collapse, but sometimes you want a sold mug. Just don't lose the lid.

10L sink

Sea To Summit Kitchen Sink

Sea To Summit Kitchen Sink

Rating for this product: 4 October 20, 2011

This little sink is great, but the best part is how it collapses to such a small item. Definitely helps during clean up, just let the pots soak for a bit. It helps. Sometimes getting it to stand up is a bit tricky.

Seals a bit tricky

Platypus Platy Water Tank

Platypus Platy Water Tank

Rating for this product: 4 October 20, 2011

I love this water carrier, but it is a bit tricky to seal, and you have to make sure it is sealed, otherwise, things can get wet. I used this on a kayak-camping trip in the ADKs, and it served us well. Ample capacity in the 6L for two people, for drinking, cooking and cleaning. Compacts down easily when empty.
