Salomon Lord Ski

October 11, 2011

Hey Gilliekc,

The biggest difference is that the Sentinel comes with titanium through the ski. This will play a major difference in ski performace, as it will be more stable, more stiff and burlier. Depending on how you skill develops, it could be a great ski of choice but if you're at all tentative, the Lord is a great replacement.

I use the Sentinel as my daily ski and love it.

Hope this helps,

Salomon Quest 10 Boot - Men's

September 26, 2011

Hey Eric,

You cannot do them at home, or at least I wouldn't recommend it. Any shop that sells Salomon boots should have the liner ovens and would be able to help you out. I have seen a couple instances of toasted liners and a mess in someones oven, not good.

I would hate to spend the $500 bucks on a pair of boots and save $20 bucks by ruining them in my kitchen.

Salomon Czar Ski

September 23, 2011

Hey Fil,

I'd say go with the 190 because although it's only 3'' in difference, you're gonna be more upset getting soething too small than if you got something with a little bit more meat! I am bigger than you in height and weight but mounted mine more progressive (forward) and love them. THis was a favorite ski in my quiver (until the Rocker2 came out)

You'd be surprised how many smaller people use the 182, so I say get the 190, mount'em forward and slay.

Salomon Sentinel Ski

September 20, 2011

The Sentinel was my go-to daily ski last year and by no means should it be considered soft. I used the 191 and it brought back all the sensations of my race skis.

Never spent much time in moguls with them, but I can tell you this ski charges. Super solid at speed, and hooks up really well. There wasn't a day last year I was disappointed when using the Sentinel, even with so many other options in skis out there.

The Mantras are bad ass, and I'm not too sure how much 4mm will make of a difference though.

Either way, you've narrowed down your choice to two great skis.

Salomon Rocker 2 Ski

September 20, 2011

Hey Ple,

I have been on both and I will be using the 192. I am also 6'1' and weigh 215. Even if I was 40 pounds lighter, I'd be on the 192.

The 8cm difference is actually pretty minimal in terms of effective edge length and I felt no issues on the bigger one not being nimble. The 184 was clearly too short for me, and I think it would be too short for you as well.

192 without question

Salomon Rocker 2 Ski

September 20, 2011

192.

I'm a little bigger than you are, but when choosing the Rocker2 remember that it's full twin rocker so it can't really compare sizing to the Czar (traditional tail) Your effective edge length might even feel a bit smaller than your Czars.

If you're at all worried, I'd mount them a bit more progressive to mimmick the tip length of the Czar.

Great ski choice, though

Thanks,
Nick

Salomon Z12 Ti Ski Binding

August 29, 2011

Hey McDaddy,

You should be able to make them work, because in general, after you mount a binding you can adjust one full size down and two full sizes up. BUT, it depends on the boot sole length of your boot. If it does work, you can expect the binding to be fully extended to accomodate your boot. I would anticipate remounting just to be safe.

Salomon STH 12 Ski Binding

August 18, 2011

Hey Jeff,

Both bindings are building on the same chasis and are very similiar. The STH will be a bit more freestyle oriented as it does not have a gliding AFD pad (Z12).

Also, the most glaring difference is that the STH has the micrometric steel heel track as the Z12 has the traditional Ti track, within its plastic housing.

I have enjoyed my STH binding and would choose them again.

Hello Michele,

If you are concerned about blisters, that is usually caused by new shoes that your feet are used to. These shoes can be worn with socks, but if you're planning on getting your feet wet, don't wear socks.

Wear the shoes with socks for a few days before you go rafting and it should help the break in.

Salomon Czar Ski

May 24, 2011

Hey Colin,

CU Boulder, huh? That's where I went and I'm glad to see you are already thinking about how much you're going to ski.

I own both of them and agree with Jamey that it is a tough choice. I love my Czars and used them as my daily ski...until the Rocker2 came out. With that being said, I was using the 190 Czar and a lot of people had trouble skiing it in conditions other than powder (groomers) I seemed to be the minority who was okay with it.

When the Rocker2 came out, it changed the game. For a ski with rockered tip and tail, it's edge hold on groomers far surpasses the Czar which would lead me to recommend the Rocker2

Enjoy Boulder homie, it's so much fun and keep us posted on what you end up choosing.

Thanks,
Nick

Salomon Twenty Twelve Ski

May 16, 2011

Hey Sammy,

With 179cm being the biggest size offered, there was a lot of people who rode the 179cm this year. Next year, the 186cm is going to be around so it will help for us 6'0'' + sized people. Most of the pros who use the skis are all on the 179cm because the 171 is simply too short.

With your height, weight and willingness to improve I'd say the 179cm. It's easier to grow into the ski, then buy the 171cm and realize after a couple months it's too short

Hope this helps,

Salomon Wings Sky GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

April 18, 2011

Hey Jim,

Sorry for the delayed response!

These aren't specifically made for "cold" temperatures, but many Salomon prodcuts could be used for different applications. There isn't additional insulated materials to cater to colder temperatures and it's sole is still geared towards trail running. Although it is gore-tex, your foot could stay pretty warm assuming you're always moving but I'd probably recommend a harder treaded winter boot, like the Quest 4D.

All in all, this would be OK for winter trail running, but if you're hiking, it'd look for a harder soled, thicker treaded hiking boot.

Hope this helps,
Nick

If you're still progressing into your ability, go with the 170cm. You can shy a bit shorter on the Sentinel because its such a powerful ski. You might have an easier time manuevering the 170's in trees and tighter skiing conditions.

Salomon Suspect Ski

February 28, 2011

Hey Jack,

Do they break easily? Depends on what you do.

All skis are taking a bigger beating than we put on them 20 years ago. We're jumping higher and taking these things to rails. 100% of the time, a ski will eventually fail against rails. The rail will never fail, not one time ever.

So, to answer you question. As we've gotten harder on skis, all companies have been trying to make their skis stronger. I think the products all of these companies are producing today are way better than that of the past. It more comes down to realistic expectations, are any skis going to last for the type of skiing you'll do.

They may be a bit short for you, because all the Czars ski shorter than their length. My girlfriend who's 5'8'' 120lbs is on the 182cm. May be a bit big for her, but she's killing it.

As far as redrilling, can you redrill, yes. What is most important is that the new holes you drill maintain an adequate distance from existing holes. The preexisting holes need to be plugged proffesionally as does the mounting of new bindings.

Hey Rafael,

In regards to Salomon, the shell and liner size in all .0 and .5 sizes is the same. Meaning a 29.0 and 29.5 are identical shells and liners. The only difference is that the 29.0 will have a thicker insole to decrease internal volume.

So, a 29.5 would work for you with a little bit thicker of an insole. Salomon still produces the 29.0's though!

Hey Djl,

Great ski choice, super fun and you got a great size.

The listed midsole mark of that ski (185cm) is 835 mm from the tail. They list that measurement because sometiems there can be imperfections in the graphic that lead to differetn midsole marks.

I'd mount then 835mm from the tail down to 830mm. The shorter you go, the more "traditional alpine" type set up you'll have.

Salomon Twenty Twelve Ski

November 22, 2010

Hey Keene,

I have skied them both.

The first thing you will notice when skiing the Twenty Twelve is the reverse camber under tail. It forces you in a much more neutral stance and doesn't allow for the "jibberish" lean back steeze of the Suspect.

Both skis rip groomers super well and in the park, you'd be suprised on the swing weight of the twenty twelve. THe suspect is proven, no need to boast. The twenty twelve is defiently different and far less conservative.

I'll be skiing the twenty twelve this year.

Hey Stu,

You're proobably thining between the 182 or 191. I have always been a fan of skiing a bigger ski and I have the 191. I am 6'1'' 225lbs. If I was your size, I would still chooose the 191 but if you're at all worried about it being too big, then the 182 would be great. It is very manuverable and handles the tight situations very well while also giving you adequate grip at higher speeds. Salomon tends to ski a bit shorter in their big mountain skis and if you see yourself advancing as a skier, thgen the 191 would be great.

Salomon Shogun Ski

November 12, 2010

Hey BIGRED,

Armada JJ's are sick but I have only skied them in pow, not crud. I have had the chance to also ski the Shogun for 15 days and I really enjoyed it. It did a great job in variable snow conditions, and blasted crud. It floats pretty well but not as good as the Armada. I'd steer you twoards the Shogun if you're looking for a ski that can do both well.

Salomon Poison Ski Boot - Women's

November 11, 2010

Hey RChap,

It's not you, Salomon's website can be very confusing.

Big Mountain does not neccessarily mean touring boots. The history of boot categories stems from the evolution of different diciplines within skiing. For example, race boots, freestyle boots, all mountain boots, beginner boots.

Each category shared many common denominators yet each also had unique characteristics that were advantageous to their specific discipline.

All Mountain for Salomon means exactly, all-mountain. This product can be used for all variable conditions and mountain offerings. All-mountain boots are the most popular for most skiers as they offer adequate stiffness and exceptional comfort.

For this boot, 2 buckles is used to decrease overall weight without decreasing performance. My mom and my girlfriend both use this boot and they are at two completely different level of skiers but both swear by them.

Hope this helps,
nick

Salomon STH 14 Driver Ski Binding

100 if you can choose, 90 if you don't have any other options.

Salomon STH 14 Driver Ski Binding

October 29, 2010

hey Ski3914073,

The 130mm brake is made as a replacement part, so they do exist if you choose to get these. So regardless, you can get these to work.

As for stretching, you're only 8mm away and that's only 4mm on each side. With a good vise, you could definintely get these to work, but I'd buy'em and special order the 130mm brakes instead.

These new drivers are so sick

Thanks man,
Nick

Salomon Lord Ski

October 27, 2010

Hey Ivo,

Since you're on a race ski already (160cm) and you like more slalom style turns, the 169 would be an easier transition but if you're looking to improve your all mountain technique, in more variable conditions. I would suggest the 177cm.

I say this because you clearly have the height and weight to handle a ski of that size and it really isn't THAT big. You have the ability to ski it and will appreciate the additional length when charging rougher conditions.

THanks,
Nick

Salomon Z12 Ti Ski Binding

October 27, 2010

Hey Kim,

The Z12's will definitely work. When choosing a binding, I usually direct people towards DIN range. Do you think you'll need more than a 4-12 DIN range? If not, here is your pick :)

These are lighter than the Salomon STH 12 also. (These weigh 857grams per half pair)

Thanks,
Nick

Hey Colin,

I was asking around yesterday and there is one guy here at work that uses the Shogun for AT purposes. He uses the old Pocket Rocket for tele and based on dimensions and technology, this ski should work pretty damn well for tele. As for AT, it rocks!

Thanks man and have a rad winter,

Hey Heath,

I have used mine for quite a while and they are holding up well. They are definitely not as bright as they were out of the box, and I can't say I am very good about keeping them clean but the occasional spray with the hose. They have held up really well, considering the circumstances.

Letting them sit soiled with dirt/mud doesn't help!

Salomon Shogun Ski

September 22, 2010

Hey Lorand,

Both the Gotama and Shogun would be great choices, but I must lean you towards the Shogun.

It dimensions will offer you the ability to slay all conditions and excell in pow. It offers rocker technology that will help you plane quickly in pow, but also allow effective edge grip on harder snow conditions.

With you size, weight and your skiing ability you could choose the 182 or 191. It really depends on what you're used to. The 191 skis pretty true to size so if a longer ski isn't what you have been on, I'd lean towards the 182.

I have been on the 191, but am 6'2'' and 225lbs.

Hope this helps!

Salomon Dumont Ski

September 1, 2010

Hey David,

The two skis are very simliar. The major differences are only going to be effective if you're spending time on rails. The Dumont offers double edge armor, and the Suspect has single edge armor. THis Salomon technology has threaded wire that runs across the based added additional strength to the edges. (not a concern if you're just rippin' around on them)

The 176 is the most popular size, and sounds like it'd be right in your wheel house. The 171 is probably a bit too small, but if you're used to throwin around a race ski, you should have no issues on the 181 either.

Overall, great ski but there are definitely better options from Salomon if you're looking for a powder oriented ski.

Enjoy dood!

Salomon Dumont Ski

September 1, 2010

Yo T1,

Don't stress, don't stress homie!

YOu could really pick up any binding, tons of great stuff out there. If you're gonna be spending time in the park and want somethign that will give you the confidence to send some booters, maybe take a look at the Salomon STH bindings.

There are the STH 12, (new)STH 14's, and the badass STH 16. Depending on how big you are, pick the binding with the appropriate din range. The STH 16 are what I use, but if you're a lighter skier, you may not want that high of a DIN limit. All sick bindings, definitely go with the STH!

Enjoy those skis though, you got a sick set up

Salomon Ghost Ski Boot - Men's

September 1, 2010

Hey Vik,

Great question. You are correct that the shells of a whole/half sized boots are the same. (ie 28 and 28.5 = are the same) The only difference is, the footbed within the liner.

All liners are made as the half sized yet a thicker insole is used for the whole sized boots. The reasoning is to eliminate more volume within the boot to help provide a greater fit.

So, it really isn't too different if you choose the 28 or 28.5. They are both the same size, except that insole. All boots will pack out a little bit, but these Ghosts are stacked with a race liner that will take a great beating.

You could really pick either, they are the same. If you're worried, pick the 28.0 and then let them pack out a bit.

Smith Troy Lee Helmet

August 26, 2010

Hey Rowland,

Most people who use this helmet, are not using it for ski racing. Unless your doing skier cross or big mountain comps, you might be one of the only people to use a full face like this for traditional ski racing. Smith makes great helmets, but if you're looking for a actual ski racing helmet, you might need to look for Briko or Carrera. As these are a bit more niche, you might have to look at more of a racing speciality shop (Reliable Racing)

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Women's

August 25, 2010

Hey Pat,

THe XA Pro 3D is a great shoe, with a very low stance to increase your stability. With that being said, you do have an increased "feel" of your terrain. Trailrunning shoes are made for people who, unlike road runners, tend to look down at the ground more and are able to choose their foot placement a bit more than standard runners/walkers.

With that being said, many people choose this shoe for casual and everyday use! If you are looking to use this shoe on concrete, more than trails, it does offer some posting support as does out XT Wing.

HOpe this helps!

Salomon Knight Ski

August 25, 2010

Yo,

The Knight could be considered a Foil replacement. It's on the lower end of the Salomon Big Mountain line of skis, with a pretty forgiving sidecut.

The Knight will give you similar feel as the Foil based on construction and base material but if you are looking for an all-mountain "do-it-all" ski, you may want to check out the Salomon Lord as well. (a beefier, woodcore, justa-tad bigger than the Knight)

Salomon Lhasa Winter Boot - Women's

August 17, 2010

Hey Hinda,

The materials on the boot have been treated, to offer some water resistence but they are not water-proof, like a Gore-tex material.

The boots are fairly high cut and should come up to about mid calf on most ladies.

Keen makes great products as well, but I think you'll be happier with these boots as they provide great warmth, great traction and are far more asthetically pleasing.

Salomon Shogun Ski

August 13, 2010

Hey CSA2502687,

At your size, I'd probably lean towards the 182's, it's only a 6cm increase which really isn't HUGE. I think if you feel comfortable on your 176 Snoops, you will have no problem stepping up to the 182. You'll be happy with this increase in the powder but will only really notice any difference in length when you're in the bumps or in tighter situations. And as you mentioned, they will ski a bit shorter because of the rocker, but not very much.

As for the other skis, I am not sure, they all make super good stuff. I've heard especially good stuff about the Obsethed.

Salomon 3D Fastpacker Mid GTX Hiking Boot - Women's

August 10, 2010

Hey Carla,

Salomon has pretty decent footbeds in their shoes but if you higher arches, and require additional support, you may be forced to change your footbeds. I am not sure of any shoe that comes "out-of-the-box" with an exceptional amount of high arch support, but any shoe can be easily adapted to your foots needs.

Padding: The 3D Fast Packer has a chasis that places your feet closer to the ground. This will increase the "feel" with the ground. You will have a higher amound of feedback of the trails or paths you tread across.

Salomon Quest 4D GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

August 5, 2010

Hey aminekh12115609,

You bring up the million dollar question. A shoe that can keep the water out, but also let out the water. The achilles heel of Goretex product.

Will this shoe work for you and your trip to Malaysia? Absolutely. This boot will work great and offer you an exceptional amount of traction, foot protection and comfort. I am not very familiar with the Vasque product, but they have usually produced quality stuff.

The 4D chassis is like our 3D chassis found in some of our trail running shoes, but on steroids. I think you will be happy with the amount of stability provided by this construction and its overall "feel" on your adventures.

Salomon Suspect Ski

July 30, 2010

Hey Jeffrey,

To answer your question fairly...

Can the edges rip out, yes. Do they happen often, no. As skiing has evolved, we're starting to hammer our gear way more than in the past. With that being said, it has become harder to create a ski that can withstand impact with rails. With that being said, expectations of products still remain high without the realistic understanding of what is truly happening.

Salomon still makes a rad product and a solid warranty, with, in general, an edge ripping out should be covered under warranty.

Hope this helps dood

The XA Pro 5 does have 25mm of posting but as a trail running shoe, you will be running on variable terrain in which your running stance may open slightly more than a consistent road surface.

I consider myself a "Clysdale" runner because I'm a bit heavier, 225lbs and this shoes offers a lot of protection from rock impact underfoot and a beefy toe cap. Definitely, not the best race shoe (a US size 9 weighs 12.9 oz) but gives me exactly what I need as a weekend trail runner.
