Best pack for skiing and hiking

Clik Elite Contrejour 35 Camera Pack - 1800cu in

Clik Elite Contrejour 35 Camera Pack - 1800cu in

Rating for this product: 5 October 3, 2011

The Contrejour 35 is hands down my favorite pack. It carries enough gear for a day of shooting in the backcountry, and it carries it well (it actually feels lighter than my old pack, despite being bigger, and cramming more stuff into it). I use it for skiing, ski touring, hiking in the summer, and general all purpose camera storage.

This pack will easily carry a pro body (or 2), with 3 to 6 lenses (depending on size and how you set up the dividers), extra batteries, CF cards, shovel, probe, extra layers, lunch, water, skins, radios. You could easily throw in a few speedlights and pocket wizards if needed. And then throw in more snacks, and yet another layer, or extra goggles, extra mittens, whatever you need. I have even used it for an overnight yurt trip with an extra stuff sack strapped to the outside.

When not skinning/touring and you find yourself needing to bootpack... the "A" or "H" frame ski carry option works great. You can also run them straight up the back of the pack, and that works great, too, but I have found that I prefer the "H" carry for skis.

When traveling by plane this pack fits perfectly into the carry on luggage size requirements. You can also fit a 15" macbook with a soft case easily into the outer compartment. The weight starts to add up with camera gear, laptop, hard drives, magazines, books, etc., though so be careful if you're flying through some place like Auckland, New Zealand. They are crazy strict about the weight of carry-on luggage there!!!

I am about 5'5" and this size is perfect for me. If you are taller and think you need the extra space, then you might want to check out the Contrejour 40.

Horny Toad Storm Tank Top - Women's

Horny Toad Storm Tank Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2011

I like this top so much I just ordered another one in a different color.

I have been wearing it for mountain biking in the heat of summer. It's nice to have straps that are strappy (vs. just a sleeveless style tank) but still have substance to them (i.e. not spaghetti straps).

The fabric has a nice soft feel to it, so it's really comfortable. And the cut is perfect in my opinion. It's not too clingy in the stomach area like so many other tanks in this style. It has a built in bra, but I do wear my own sports bra with it for extra support while exercising.

And an extra thumbs up for the subtle style touches with the diagonal, decorative, seams on the front and contrast colors on the edges!

Mountain House Buffalo Style Chicken Wrap

Mountain House Buffalo Style Chicken Wrap

Rating for this product: 5 July 20, 2011

This was so much better than I expected (i mean really... dehydrated buffalo style chicken????) A friend brought it with her on one of our trips and let me try some. I liked it so much I decided to buy some for our next adventure.

The chicken seems to be more like real chicken (i.e. you can see/taste the stringy proteins rather than having cubes of reconstituted chicken parts). The sauce has a nice kick, and it's a pretty good consistency to use in a tortilla (not too runny, but I think everyone should just pay attention to any dehydrated meal as far the amount of water is concerned... always err on the side of less water to start and add more if needed).

Isis Everyday Brief Underwear - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 July 20, 2011

Fabric and color options are great.

The fabric is nice and light, has a smooth, soft feel, similar to the Patagonia Barely Hipster. I prefer the fit of the Patagonia hipsters, though (I have big hips), so I ended up going with those instead of these, but if they are cut right for you, you are bound to love them.

Columbia Greenway Cami Top - Women's

Columbia Greenway Cami Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 July 20, 2011

This top runs a little on the big side, enough that I would actually consider sizing down (usually I am fine when things run big cause I prefer a loose fit) but it's definitely comfortable.

I was expecting the inner layer to be sewn in completely to the outer layer, but it's actually a bra top that is just tacked in to the outer layer in two spots, one on each side. So it can get a little tangled and you have to sort it out before putting on.

Comfortable fabric, nice color options. Since the bra top is so loose, I might just take the stictches out and use the outer layer as a tank by itself.

quality food, could use some spice

AlpineAire Brown Rice and Chicken with Veggies

AlpineAire Brown Rice and Chicken with Veggies

Rating for this product: 4 July 20, 2011

It certainly gets the job done after a long day of hiking.

I love that they have brown rice instead of white, and the chicken is surprisingly good for a dehydrated meal.

This one was also VERY filling since it has more than just the brown rice as far as grains go. I ended up saving a third of it and eating the rest for breakfast the next day. (And that actually worked out for the best because we ended up camping an extra night. It was nice to have an extra breakfast instead of just power bars at that point).

I do wish it had a few more veggies, and a few more spices, though. You could always bring your own little spice pack to throw in. The lack of spice seems to be a common theme in all the AlpineAire meals vs. the Mountain House meals. But the quality is great.

beauty sleep!

Big Agnes Sleeping Giant Memory Foam Sleeping Pad

Big Agnes Sleeping Giant Memory Foam Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 July 15, 2011

I had been lusting after a friend's BA Sleeping Giant for a few years and FINALLY pulled the trigger on one of my own. I have an extra wide Therm-a-rest that I already use for car camping (it's an older model, I think it's called the CampLight?) that is 25inches wide. So I got the wide/long version of the Sleeping Giant and it's a perfect fit. I have never slept so well in a tent!

I have also used my ultralight/backpacking POE sleeping pad in there for times when we are on our way to a backpacking trip, but still have one or two nights car camping before we get to the start of our intended hike/backpack. And then leave the Sleeping Giant in car while we are off in the woods/desert.

Sure it takes up space, but if you have room in the car, it makes your sleep much more sound! I also find that the memory foam WILL squish down pretty small, so if you have a little bit of extra space in a duffel, you can cram it in there and then it really doesn't take as much extra space as you'd think.

I have also compared this to the Therm-a-rest dreamtime and think BA's quality is MUCH better, and they paid a lot more attention to detail.

Changing my mind about skirts!

Patagonia Kamala Skirt - Women's

Patagonia Kamala Skirt - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 15, 2011

I'm not usually a "skirt-person" but I started buying skirts because it makes changing in and out of bike clothes so much easier, and now I'm in love with this skirt! It goes with me on every camping trip, and it goes in the duffel for every post-mountain-bike-ride meal and/or beer. I wish they offered more colors (i.e. not black or grey, but actual color) that were not floral. I'm hoping they will keep this one in production and have some new color options next year. I would definitely get a 2nd one.

I never wear it as a dress, but for girls who like dresses, it does make a nice summer dress when converted. I like the wide rushed waist when it's in skirt mode. And the fabric is incredibly comfortable.

Columbia Hoodie Hero Pullover Sweatshirt - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 15, 2011

This is one of those hoodies that looks much better in person. The blue color is slightly more vibrant, but not overwhelming. The fabric is not too thick, so it's perfect for summer. I liked it SO much I decided to buy a second one in a different color cause I knew I would wear it out in no time. The cowl neck is also very versatile. You can slouch in a few different ways. I have gotten a TON of compliments on this top!

not so strapy

Teva Mush Adapto Sandal - Women's

Teva Mush Adapto Sandal - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 July 15, 2011

I ordered same size as all other flip flops I've ever ordered and the fit was just fine. And like most flip flops, they will break in, and become slightly wider as they do. As the footbed breaks in and conforms to your foot, it gets a little thinner, and also slightly wider. So it's okay to be a close fit from the start.

I decided to try these out because I liked the detail of having multiple little straps instead of one wide one. They are set so close together though, that they just look like one wide strap anyway. So if Teva makes these again, I hope they will spread the straps apart next time. The top most of the little straps tends to get twisted every once in a while. I really like the idea, I just think the design needs a little tweaking for my personal tastes.

But otherwise, they are very comfortable. I have the Teva Olowahu as well (which are my absolute favorite), and find these soles a little heartier, so if you're looking for more support, one of the Teva Mush options (like this or the original mush) might be the way to go. You get a little more cushion for the feet after the break-in.

prefer the BA

Therm-a-Rest Dreamtime Comfort Cover

Therm-a-Rest Dreamtime Comfort Cover

Rating for this product: 2 July 14, 2011

I bought this one and the Big Agnes Sleeping Giant to compare, and the Big Anges won. The foam either wasn't re-shaping, or it was cut VERY un-even. You also end up exposing the foam when you put your sleeping pad in and out (the BA has another cover over it's foam when you unzip the main cover). The overall quality of the cover was suspect as well... a lot of loose threads hanging all over the place. It looks like Therm-a-rest decided to compete with the BA Sleeping Giant and pulled this thing together in less than a week's time.

One thing that could be a plus is the soft texture in the Dreamtime cover. The BA has a very slick nylon, and my camp pillow is always sliding off. Although, I think the slick nylon is easier to clean than the plush texture. So that's more of a personal preference thing there.

And don't get me wrong, I like Therm-a-rest. In fact I am using a therm-a-rest sleeping pad along with my Sleeping Giant. Unfortunately I think they missed the mark on this Dreamtime cover.

Platypus Platy SoftBottle

Platypus Platy SoftBottle

Rating for this product: 5 July 14, 2011

LOVE these for hiking, biking, camping, backpacking... There is the obvious weight and space savings as you drink and it gets smaller. For a REALLY long and/or hot day, I will fill my 3 liter hydration pack, AND throw in one of these so I have 4 liters total. The only downsides that I have found so far are that I tend to lose the caps (but I'm sure that's more my fault than Platypus'), and if you are backpacking with a Steripen, it does not work with such a small opening. So you still need a wide mouth bottle if you're planning to sterilize with the steripen. One nalgene and multiple platy bottles will do the trick though.

DAKINE Replacement Reservoir

DAKINE Replacement Reservoir

Rating for this product: 4 July 14, 2011

I've been super happy with the Dakine reservoirs. Nice big opening for filling and cleaning. I have a 3 liter that came with my bike pack, and I bought another 2 liter for shorter rides and hikes. In addition to bike packs, I use these in my hiking packs, and will also freeze the extra one and use it for ice in the cooler on a camping weekend, and then you have cold water when it melts.

better than last years

DAKINE Replacement Bite Valve

DAKINE Replacement Bite Valve

Rating for this product: 4 July 14, 2011

Got this to replace last year's dakine bite valve which was leaking air and making it difficult use. This newer style works much better in my opinion. The previous one had a pull/push lock, and I ended up biting too hard on the bite valve and thus breaking it. This one twists to lock it off. The only downside is that I find it hard to lock/unlock with one hand, however it doesn't leak (at least not so far) so I only need to lock it when I'm not actually riding or hiking (i.e. I lock it when I throw it on the car so it doesn't leak by accident).

Patagonia Barely Hipster - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 11, 2011

Nice summer option and alternative to the Active Hipster (which I also love). These are much lighter than the Active line, but every bit as great for active people, and especially great for hot summer days of hiking. The waist band is really smooth, and like the product title claims, feels like it's barely there.

It's hard to see in the photo, but the black has the same fabric pattern as the other two.

do they come in wide?

Chaco ZX/2 Yampa Sandal - Women's

Chaco ZX/2 Yampa Sandal - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 July 11, 2011

These are great as far as being a sandal with a vibram sole, and I like this new Yampa style sole over the traditional options. The double strap is always a nice touch, and seems like it helps to customize the fit better than one wide strap, and the green colors are especially awesome. They take some time to figure out the best strap adjustment, but I am also convinced I need the wide version, which does not seem to be available (or wasn't at the time I bought these).

So I would caution anyone with wide feet to seek out the wide version, otherwise, if you're a Chaco fan, you're bound to enjoy these.

Honey Stinger Stinger Waffle - 16 Pack

Rating for this product: 5 July 11, 2011

So good! Both flavors are equally as good in my opinion. Makes a great snack, and is WAY more exciting to eat than a bar of things all mushed up and pounded into a brick. Not much protein, pretty much just a calorie punch, but great when that's what you need.

I've used these lately for backpacking, hiking, and biking.

FAVORITE ALERT

Teva Olowahu Sandal - Womens

Teva Olowahu Sandal - Womens

Rating for this product: 5 July 11, 2011

I was so excited that these finally came in green! I bought them, broke them in, they quickly became my favorites, their distinct tan lines were emblazoned into my feet in no time, and THEN... I lost them. SAD PANDA. I had swapped them for my hiking shoes for a very steep scramble up a hillside and forgot to pack them up. I went back the next morning to retrieve them and someone had swapped their rubber-dollar-store flip flops for mine. LAME. I am extremely bummed that the green is now sold out (all-time favorite color, things in green just make me happy), but I bought a second pair in a different color because they are seriously THAT comfortable.

Also, I have a wider foot, and prefer less arch support, so I think these are universally good for anyone and will break in just right for your own feet (saw previous review saying they were good for narrow feet and higher arch).

Discrete Varmo Pom Beanie

Discrete Varmo Pom Beanie

Rating for this product: 5 December 20, 2010

This beanie is SO cozy and warm and comfortable. The yarn is super soft, and I think it would be a great fit for a lot of different people/heads. It has a nice stretch factor in the way it was knitted (most women's hats are too small for me, but the cable knit has a nice give that makes it versatile). I like that it's not lined with fleece, too. Those sometimes feel claustrophobic. This one is great!

Rating for this product: 4 December 9, 2010

LIGHT! A+ for that. BUT, the heel pieces feel like I might brake them when I step out (and I have never felt that way with the Barons). We will just have to see how they stand the test of time. This isn't my primary set up, not even my secondary set up, so it won't get abused as much as my Barons anyway.

They feel just fine for skiing in, and I haven't had the chance to tour in them yet, but will throw up a new review when I do.

Helly Hansen, You're Blowing It!

Helly Hansen Mission Cargo Pant - Men's

Helly Hansen Mission Cargo Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 December 9, 2010

I have been wearing Helly Hansen pants for the last 4 years at least. Always the men's cargo pant (because the girl pants never offer enough freedom of motion for me), and always the same size. I had the same problem as the previous reviewer. I ordered the same size as usual, and it's at least a full size too small. I ordered a size up and they are still tighter than my previous HH pants (that are a size smaller). Really annoying. Returned both of them.

Apparently they have started building them for tall people??? And if you go up a size it's just because you're taller? I donno... I am really bummed. My current Helly Hansen pants are cased in duct tape at the ankles, and I'm gonna have to keep wearing them until I find another brand. I have tried on a good 5 brands at this point. Pain in the arse.

So.... If you're a slim tall guy, you might still like these pants a lot, but will probably need to go up a size from what you are used to.

replaced my tek towel, A+

Sea To Summit DryLite Towel

Sea To Summit DryLite Towel

Rating for this product: 5 September 8, 2010

I started off with a L Tek Towel but now have this DryLite and I like it MUCH better.

I went with the XL because I prefer the full coverage and use it more for car camping and traveling vs. backpacking (I have a smaller tek towel I'm still using for backpacking, but will probably replace with a small drylite)

Even though this one looks more like the texture of a chamois, I find it to be a much better and softer feel across the skin than other towels, especially compared to the tek towel which felt very grabby when you run it across your skin. Even though it (tek towel) looks like a plush cotton towel, as soon as you run it across the skin it has this weird rough grabby feeling. This is NOT the case with the dry lite, it feels perfectly soft (note, it is not plush, but feels smooth and soft in comparison to others) and dries you off really fast. The loop is also great for hanging to dry in a tree, and its nice that it opens with a snap to hang it from almost anywhere. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

good, but a little grabby

Sea To Summit Tek Towel

Sea To Summit Tek Towel

Rating for this product: 3 September 8, 2010

I have used this towel for travel and camping (size L). It's nice to have a standard size towel that packs down so small and is easy to shove in a corner of the pack. It absorbs great, dries you off quick, and dries off itself in a reasonable amount of time.

I purchased this one because I liked the fluffy-beach towel texture, however in reality the micro fibers are a bit grabby on the skin (dry and well moisturized skin alike). The "grabiness" lessens a bit with every wash, but it's still a little grabby. In the end, I let my boyfriend use this one, and have picked up a Sea-To-Summit DryLite for myself.

NRS Aquapac Small Whanganui All-Purpose Case

Rating for this product: 5 September 8, 2010

I bought this along with the aquapack 414 compact camera to compare them for use with the camera (because this one was a little cheaper). I decided the window feature of the 414 was the way to go for camera use and ended up returning this one, however I could definitely see this being useful for documents, passport, or anything else small that you want to keep dry and handy. You could still use it to keep a small camera dry and just take it out when you want to use it (depending on the situation of course, and would not be able to do under water photos). Also, it's not pictured, but it does come with a string to hang around your neck, or tie to something else.

NRS Aquapac Compact Camera Case

NRS Aquapac Compact Camera Case

Rating for this product: 4 September 8, 2010

I used a Canon S90 in this aquapack during a multi-day raft trip, and loaned it to a friend during a canyoneering trip who loved using it. The temps were generally cool to moderate while I was using it.

Pros: Keeps the water out! The plastic is nice and pliable so it's pretty easy to change settings on the camera -even with a rotating dial, and the long neck string was great to just keep it around my neck hanging down over my PFD -it was always at the ready, and as long as the window was clear for the shot, you can't notice any difference in quality shooting through it.

Cons: because the closure system is a long plastic bar, it didn't fit very well in any pockets of my PFD, and even if it fit, it was difficult to get it back out of those pockets (so I had to just leave it hanging around my neck), you also need to take a little extra care to make sure the plastic window is flat against the lens so your photos don't look warped, but it's not difficult to do that (or you could turn this into a plus and get artsy!)

Outdoor Research Lateral Dry Bag

Outdoor Research Lateral Dry Bag

Rating for this product: 3 September 8, 2010

Pros: The wide opening is really great for packing and unpacking and finding your gear, and the 4 straps and handle/strap can also be useful for tie-down on a boat.

Cons: I found it harder to purge the air enough with such a wide opening for a comparatively shallow bag. I think this was due in part to the items I had and how I packed them, so I will explain. I used this bag on a river trip to hold some camera gear, tripod, small camera pack, and a couple random things. So the items themselves created a problem in purging the air around them. I also used this bag for canyoneering/backpacking and had items organized into 3 stuff sacks that I then put into the dry bag. The air purged a little easier with these softer items, but still had trouble getting it all. I think it would work better if you are not packing and organizing items in other stuff sacks or cases first, or if you have one stuff sack with say a sleeping bag, and then fill in all the space with your clothes.

Suggestions: I think adding a purge valve or a zip-lock style closure would make this bag close up better and more securely.

Sea To Summit Pocket Trowel - Reinforced Nylon

Sea To Summit Pocket Trowel - Reinforced Nylon

Rating for this product: 3 September 8, 2010

When I first opened the package just to check it out, brand new, I found the storage compartment to be worthless. I thought maybe I was crazy and wasn't suppose to remove that end cap and had to double check the packaging to make sure it was listed as a feature. I eventually got it open, but it was near impossible and is WAY too much trouble to bother using it for any storage, especially TP. The buttons to collapse the shovel are a little easier, but could still be improved. Overall, it still works as a shovel, but I hope they upgrade and smooth out the kinks in the next version. And call me girly if you want to, but if you're going to bother offering a product in multiple colors, it would be nice to choose your own color when purchasing on the web.

Mary Janes Farm Organic Black Bean Hummus

My friends used this on our trip through The Narrows to put on sandwiches and had more than the three of them could eat. I had a bag of baby carrots that was perfect for dipping. It made a great snacky extra to the small lunch I brought on day 2. I can see how it would make 8 servings, too. It was on the dense and filling side of the spectrum. I thought it tasted great as a snack in the backcountry.

Mountain House Oriental Style Spicy Chicken - 2 Serving Entree

Mountain House Oriental Style Spicy Chicken - 2 Serving Entree

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2010

I wanted something that had a good amount of meat and veggies, not just creamy noodles or rice and one topping. This was looking like my only option to fit the criteria, and after reading all the reviews I was extra sold on this one. I didn't have time to try it at home first like many people suggest of any dehydrated meal, but thanks to the reviews I made an awesome decision here, and as far as a dehydrated meal after a full day of hiking, it did not disappoint. Like most people I had the whole bag to myself as one meal. I also did not have any desserts or side dishes, and didn't do any snacking between lunch and dinner. I didn't keep track of the time I let it sit before eating, but tried to err on the long side as well from other suggestions and it worked great. Would definitely buy this one again.

Backcountry.com Dawn Patrol Vacuum Coffee Tumbler

Backcountry.com Dawn Patrol Vacuum Coffee Tumbler

Rating for this product: 5 May 26, 2010

I broke my previous favorite coffee mug and decided to try these out. I find them great for camping since you can store them without leaking any leftover drips that might have been in there and great when you want to bring a hot beverage to work and not have to drink it all right away. It's also nice to not worry about it leaking in my tote bag on the way home. Also great to take into your local coffee shop for a 12 oz refill (and force yourself to NOT spend the money on the 16 or 20 oz). I also used these on a road trip.... loaded up one with a chai to drink right away, and kept a mocha hot in the other one to drink 4 hours later. Been using them for 2 months pretty consistently and they are not as scratched up as I expected either (green and blue ones).

Rating for this product: 5 May 26, 2010

Love these! Can wear the wool ALL DAY and it's great. My other favorites are the Patagonia Active Hipster briefs, which I actually think are more comfy at first because they have a -slightly higher- rise and that awesomely smooth waist band, HOWEVER, I feel the need to take those off at some point after wearing the synthetics all day. The Icebreakers are different/better in that respect and makes them awesome for all day ski tours, hiking, and traveling.

Outdoor Research Ultralight Stuff Sack

Rating for this product: 5 May 26, 2010

I bought the 15L, but wish I had the 20L, though that's a personal issue really. Great stuff sack, not too bulky, though I did expect it to be a little lighter than it is (but guessing this will last longer). The lock on the drawcord is sewn into the rim/opening of the bag which I was a little annoyed with at first, but then I realized how my other stuff sacks all have broken plastic pieces and I can no longer lock the drawcords and decided it was actually a really smart design on OR's part and I can just get used to it.

Lolë Quartz Tank Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 May 26, 2010

I love the look of this top and the Sea Blue color, but was bummed to see it's not available in XL. Was hoping the a-line/empire waist would let me get away with a size L (I can usually do that with a style like this), but that was not the case. It's still more of a slim fit despite the a-line. Bummed. Oh well.

ExOfficio Aza Tank - Women's

ExOfficio Aza Tank - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 May 26, 2010

Normally I am on the upper end of the XL and prefer brands like TNF and Columbia that tend to run a little big, but the XL in this top was too big (most problematic in the arm holes since it is sleeveless). The Light Jade color option being mostly white was also see through. On the plus side, the fabric was soft, and really light, and I could still see it being great for a hot summer day. I would definitely recommend sizing down.

Columbia Shore Thing Tank Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 26, 2010

The shelf bra doesn't do much for me (still wear a sports bra with it) but I like the rest of it enough that it doesn't bother me. I've been wearing this mountain biking a bunch and love it. It wicks great and even though it's "slim" fit, it's not too tight, and fabric has a great hand despite being mostly polyester. Nice and soft/comy still. Love the green with yellow pattern combo, and I like the keyhhole back for style points so it's not as boring as the rest of my tech tops.

Great top, perfect in the chest and shoulder area, but too snug in the mid-section for me. I have other Columbia tanks that don't have this problem. Otherwise it would have been awesome for biking. I had to return it. Would be great for someone smaller in the hip area.

Lorpen Superlite Merino Wool Ski Socks

Rating for this product: 5 March 19, 2010

I have a variety of lorpen socks and these are BY FAR my favorite. The merino is really comfy. Some of the others have a weave that starts to itch or irritate my feet on long days or hiking/touring, but not these. Wish there were some Mediums left in stock! I recently tried out some other brands and still not as good as these. Padding is for suckers. These are the perfect thin layer of comfy merino.

Dynafit TLT Vertical ST Alpine Touring Binding

Dynafit TLT Vertical ST Alpine Touring Binding

Rating for this product: 5 January 22, 2010

Just spent a week touring in BC and I am now a Dynafit convert. I have used my Freeride setup for the last 7 years and also tried out the marker barons earlier this year. The Dynafits take some getting use to, especially in rotating the heel lift back and forth on the fly while hiking, but the weight (or lack there-of) and ease on the joints while hiking, and just general ease of motion while hiking is amazing. I went back to the freerides for a day and could really feel the flexing in the binding and tweaking on my knees while hiking. I also hike with a boat load of heavy camera gear, so getting the weight off my feet was a huge draw. I don't really huck but do like to crank out big turns when I can and found no issue there with these bindings. (I am definitely not the type that lives for the up track). I will probably still use the freeride setup on occasion, but I think touring with those marker barons will be extremely rare from the pain-in-the-arse heel lifts and required removal of ski to go back to ski mode. I don't care how bomber people say they are and how much they ski like a "real alpine binding" and how much the weight isn't noticeable. It is. More Dynafits please.

Marmot Midweight Zip-Neck Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 January 5, 2010

This top has a great fit, and seems perfectly warm, but the fabric has this weird grabby feeling to it. I purchased this along with a couple options for mid-layers and decided to return this one in favor of the thinner, smoother fabric of the north face el cap top. The fabric might soften up or smooth out in the wash (it has a similar feeling to some of the micro fiber tek towels out there). But ultimately I just wanted one mid-layer and chose a different one for a couple reasons.

Rating for this product: 4 January 5, 2010

This fabric was thinner than I expected it to be (but that may be a plus for my applications during skiing), but I decided to try this instead of the TKA 100 top because those have a crazy slim fit and was not comfy. This one on the other hand runs big. I could probably size down, but not worth the hassle so I'm sticking with the XL.

The North Face TKA 100 Fleece Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 5, 2010

A friend of mine recommended these and now I see why. They are just really really comfy and they keep me warm on cold winter nights because I can't afford to turn the heat up too high in my apartment. They are so comfy I almost just wore them to work one day. I decided to get a second pair and I do want to note that the second pair fit tighter than the first so maybe TNF should keep an eye on their QC. Luckily, they were not too small, but definitely a big difference between the grey ones and the 2nd pair I bought in black. Still love them though.

The North Face TKA 100 Glacier 1/4 Zip Fleece Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 January 5, 2010

as others have mentioned, this runs very snug. Usually an XL from TNF is roomy on me, but this one was too snug to be comfortable over a base layer and under a jacket. I wish the fleece had more stretch in it as well for putting it on, and general movements while wearing it. Since I can't order anything bigger than the XL I'm returning, I ended up getting one of the TNF heavyweight baselayers instead (and that ones runs on the big side).

These are soft on the outside, but no fleece on the inside. Thinner material than I expected. I ordered these and the north face tka 100 pants and decided to keep the TNF ones and return these. These are nicer price, but i had to go for the fleece-on-skin comfort factor of the others. The fit was good, but the feeling of the fabric was the downside for me.

Wondering where people are mounting their AT bindings on the Asylums? I mounted mine on the recommended line, but feel like they are way too far forward (and compared to my regular alpine set up, they are at least 3 cm forward). Seems a shame to redrill them so soon, but I think I might have to. Wondering if anyone else has been mounting back a bit?

Rating for this product: 5 September 14, 2009

Comfy enough I bought a 2nd one.

The fabric is a little heavier than I was expecting, but the seamless-ness is really nice and comfy. So comfy that when I burned my shoulders by accident one weekend, this was the only bra I could wear until my burn went away.

I use it for hiking and biking, and plan to wear it skiing. It wicks and dries better than the seamless Champion bras I have been wearing (which are still great, but I think the Patagonia will be better in the winter for that reason).

Sigg Traveler 1.0L Bottle

Sigg Traveler 1.0L Bottle

Rating for this product: 4 September 14, 2009

Bought this for my boyfriend but he left it at my house... so i started using it and found out that I really love it. I thought... "whatever it's just another water bottle" but the smaller mouth is much easier to drink from than a nalgene, my water tastes great, and the finish on the outside of the bottle is just nice and classy.

My only complaint is that there are a few too many threads in the screw top. I like to get to my drinking water a little faster than that. I would compare it to the Laken bottles... easier to get at your water especially nice when you are really dehydrated or just want a really quick drink. It sounds nit-picky but those kind of details can be really nice.

Platypus Platy Plus Bottle

Rating for this product: 5 September 14, 2009

I just bought my second platy bottle and the new ones are made of a newer and seemingly more durable material (though I have yet to have a problem with my first one). They also have a slightly different shape with a loop near the mouth to grab on to or clip to a biner. I'm not sure if BC has mixed stock of old and new designs, but it was the 1.0L regular screw top close top.

I like to use them for extra water on long bike rides, or freeze before a camping trip to use as ice pack in the cooler and eventually for drinking water in the next day or two.

Patagonia Margot Dress - Women's

Patagonia Margot Dress - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 September 14, 2009

I had the same problem as some previous reviewers... too clingy/tight in the waist/stomach area. It fit perfectly up top, but unfortunately not enough flow of fabric out from the empire waist (which would usually be the perfect style for my body shape, but sadly not with this particular dress). Otherwise it's really cute and the fabric has a nice feel.

So... recommended if you are on the slim side, and not recommended if your middle is your "problem area."

Rating for this product: 3 September 14, 2009

This spoon has the feel of a kid spoon to me. Not that it is small, but the way kid spoons have that extra coating of plastic and are shallow (as other reviewers noted). On the plus side it nests nicely with the matching fork, but on the down side, it's not the most comfortable to eat with. Better than a throw-away plastic spoon, and gets the job done, but not the first spoon I would reach for. It looks like a normal shape in the picture, but the angle of the photo is a little deceiving I think.

The North Face Crescent Sunshine Hooded Sweatshirt - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 September 14, 2009

I love this hoodie but had to return it. I ordered an XL which is usually perfect or big for me coming from TNF, but this one was very tight in the stomach/waist area and would have been awful for layering. If they made a 2x I would exchange it, but they don't. Smaller size ladies might want to consider sizing up.

As far as construction, it is a nice thick fleece, and the buttons have a hidden zipper so you don't have to do up the buttons every time if you don't want to bother.

Rating for this product: 5 September 14, 2009

I have worn my 1st pair of TNF flip flops (from last summer) so much I needed to get a second pair. I have not worn out the old ones yet, but they are so comfy I just wanted to get a 2nd pair in a different color (and then be ready for the day when the 1st pair does need to be retired).

The straps are really comfy, and the footbeds conforms to your feet so nicely. TNF did a great job with these. I went with a 9, which is sizing down a half size for me from my sneaker size of 9.5 As the footbeds wear-in they get just a touch wider and longer, so they end up perfect.

Rating for this product: 5 May 28, 2009

I lost a few stakes on my 2nd to last camping trip so I bought a pack of these to fill in where needed. I used 4 of them to stake down the guy lines for my tent last weekend and my tent did not budge (it's a TNF rock 22). In contrast, my friend's big agnes 4 person tent blew 1/4 to a 1/2 mile across the desert, while another friend's tent (that was anchored with guy lines around rocks) blew on it's side, and our BD megamid shelter also blew over (though the stakes did stay in the ground for that guy).... but you get the idea... it was REALLY WINDY! I'm sure tent design was a large factor, but I'm sure the stakes helped tremendously as well.

Outdoor Research Sonnet Cap - Women's

Outdoor Research Sonnet Cap - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 27, 2009

I have gotten a TON of compliments on this hat and I am always so stoked to say it's made by Outdoor Research.

I originally bought this to wear hiking or after biking when my head is all sweaty and dirty, but it's so cute and comfortable that I decided I should get a 2nd one to keep clean for every day use at work or out and about. Sadly the green one is sold out!

I have one suggestion for OR though... the zipper pull on the stash pocket was kind of annoying against my head because of the direction that it zips when it it closed. I just leave the pocket open so the zipper pull is under the flap that lines the bottom inside of the hat and it's not a problem, i never notice it anymore, but maybe for future versions they should reverse the direction of the zipper.

I also bought the size Large because women's specific hats NEVER fit my head (they are always too small) and I had to exchange this for a Medium. If it helps for reference, I also wear a size medium in Giro helmets (both ski and bike).

I hope OR makes more of these in even more color choices for next season.

Still great, but personally loved last year's version a lot better

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 April 10, 2009

Still a solid choice, but last year's version was a lot better. They are both long which is great for a base layer top so it is less likely to ride up, but this newer one is tighter in the hip/butt area which is not as functional for most women (hello people, women have hips!) so it tends to ride up a little anyway, despite the length. I have to try and stretch this one out a little before wearing it unlike the one I purchased last year which is still a perfect fit.

Last year's color choices were a lot better too, loved the charcoal one especially and do not like having such light colors in my base layers (this year's). It would have been nice to have one darker color option available. And normally I would be all over a green option, but that "guacamole" looks like vomit. Sorry guys!

To end on a high note, i still love the material and the weave they use. A nice flat smooth finish to this merino that is more like a jersey knit (but not as stretchy as cotton jersey) and good flat lock seems. And performance of the merino during activity is stellar.

I also LOVE LOVE LOVE these boots so far. The ONLY thing I have done to them is to put my own footbeds in them and wear them around my house for a couple hours before skiing on them, and the first day on snow was awesome.

I tried on the Scarpa Domina, Scarpa Diva, and Garmont Xena and NONE OF THEM fit. Mostly it was a problem with my amazon calves. All of those boots had the buckles moved to their biggest settings and it was still a HUGE struggle to close them only to lose all blood flow. I was starting to think I would never be able to have a dynafit set up if I wanted to. I tried on the Shiva and it fit pretty close, AND it had two more spots to move the buckles over (i ended up moving them one bigger).

They were hard to get into at first with the BOA lace over the tongue and all the heel padding, but I quickly discovered all you have to do is pull up on the tongue and your foot slides right in (there is a band of elastic over the base of the tongue). If you put it in walk mode first it's even easier.

I was skiing a Salomon Rush 9 previously (claimed to be a 90 flex) and had spent mucho dinero on getting them fitted. The Shivas ski just as well if not better out of the box (with my own footbeds) and I would say they have a similar flex (BD says these are 110).

I have about 20 days on them so far and the liners seem to have packed in a bit so I am glad i did not get them heat molded. If it becomes a problem i will surely update my review.

Our snowpack has been super sketch until just recently so I have not taken them out on any tours, just skiing in-bounds (which should give you a good idea of how awsome they are for the pure pleasure of skiing), but will also update after a few hikes.

Final thoughts... the buckles are super smooth, and my feet are super happy. I want to go skiing now just so I have an excuse to use my new boots!

no size 23.5?? -JenKandy, bc now has the alpine sole in stock: http://www.backcountry.com/store/BLD0437/Black-Diamond-Shiva-Alpine-Sole-Block.html -ReJen, it seems all the BD boots are a little hard to come by this year. not sure if BD couldn't make enough, of if they are just way more popular than expected. I know i've been recommending them to everyone! -Re

McNett ReviveX Synthetic Fabric Cleaner

December 11, 2008

would this be a poor choice for a down jacket? i see it says to use it for synthetic insulation jacket specifically but there is not down wash available on the website right now, so wondering if this would work okay, too?

Outdoor Research Banff Bodysuit - Women's

I usually end up buying mens' pants that have a more relaxed fit, like the helly hansen agenda pant to work with the "junk in the trunk". And I have a friend who likes the Sessions brand mens' pants. I understand not all women like the baggy look, so to that end, I have found some luck with the north face and columbia women's line running a bit roomier than other brands. I had some TNF women's freedom pants that worked out pretty well, might look into those? Good luck, I know how you feel!!!

no venting as stated, otherwise good

Helly Hansen Agenda Pant - Men's

Helly Hansen Agenda Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 11, 2008

i like the fit of these, nice and relaxed, but i was really bummed to find out they do not have ANY vents as stated in the tech specs. I have had previous year's models of the same pant that also had inner leg vents, so i assumed they would have them by that fact as well. But no. They are really harshing my ventilation mellow.

Aside from that, the fit is great, nice and loose, the VELCRO on the cargo pocket is burley and because they have the waist adjuster tabs i don't have to wear belt if i don't want to. I have been wearing my last pair for 3 years and they finally gave up on keeping the water out, so it's nice to have a new pair that is waterproof again.

kmc... that was the first thing i noticed, too... only Pink or Purple???? Why not at least one blue or green choice? At least they aren't pastels, though! I will give it that. If i -was- going to buy pink or purple i would want them bold. But that blue choice for the men's version would be sweet!

Sea To Summit X-Bowl Collapsable Bowl

Sea To Summit X-Bowl Collapsable Bowl

Rating for this product: 5 October 2, 2008

can't get much better than this. I'm gonna have to buy another for my car camping dry box (my other bowl doesn't collapse and is taking up way too much space). I've been using this all summer for bike-camping trips. I used it for an overnight tour in the spring as well where i crammed all my stuff in to a day pack and it was so nice to just slide this bowl in flat. wish i could choose my color, but oh well, it's great either way!

GSI Outdoors Lexan Teaspoon

GSI Outdoors Lexan Teaspoon

Rating for this product: 5 October 2, 2008

sporks seem all multi-functional and all, but i really love having this spoon. you just can't scrape the bottom of your oatmeal quite as well with a spork. I don't why you wouldn't buy these, so cheap, light, and useful.

Rating for this product: 5 October 2, 2008

i said almost the same thing about the spoon.... sometimes you just want a real fork and not a spork. i also feel like im scratching the crap out of my jetboil with my spork, and come on... you can't eat noodles quite as well with a sport as you can with a real fork. it's really light, really cheap, cleans up fast, just get one.

this was my staple until i found the sea to summit X bowl. this is great for what it is, though i found my spork and cleaning it with sand in the desert scratched the crap out of it. the price is nice though.

Rating for this product: 4 October 2, 2008

i wasn't sure if this was a hard plastic or a collapable plastic, but i was recently camping with a friend who had one and found out it is the collapsible one. Now i'm getting one for sure. I hate having to buy water on the way to the campsite and using all that extra plastic. Stoked to have a refillable one

MSR Alpine Folding Utensils - Set

Rating for this product: 3 October 2, 2008

these don't hold up quite as well as the jet boil ones. they like to fold up on you while you're trying to use them and the plastic is a bit too pliable in general to be as effective as they could be. for a few extra bucks i think the jet boil utensils are the way to go.

more xc/freeride than downhill maybe

Sombrio Avante MTB Glove - Women's

Sombrio Avante MTB Glove - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 October 2, 2008

not bad, but i wish they had some padding or at least reinforcement at the base of the fingers. i found myself switching to my old gloves half way through a day of lift-served riding. probably better for xc/freeride than downhill. otherwise the fit is good (make sure you follow their fit chart). Usually i wear a large womens or a medium mens/unisex and i needed the XL in these, glad i measured first.

Pearl Izumi Zilch Cycling Glove - Full-Finger - Women's

Pearl Izumi Zilch Cycling Glove - Full-Finger - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 October 2, 2008

i measure 7 inches from tip of middle finger to wrist and 4 inches across my palm (8 inches around the palm), and i wear a size Large. i find the base of the fingers to be a little on the snug side but maybe i haven't worn them in enough yet (i have another pair of PI gloves that don't have this problem, so maybe i am forgetting about the break-in period). I like the big cush padding in the base of the palm and the reinforcement at the base of the fingers. I wish they would put padding in that part that doesn't fall apart like their other gloves (i.e. similar design to the padding they did use in the palm) but that's just me. I don't see why we have to assume calluses are normal when they can be prevented with a little bit of padding (they just need to make the padding quality.... the best gloves i ever had were a pair of Scotts but those seem REALLY hard to find in the US for some reason.) anyway....on another high note, the soft fabric for the nose-wipe thumb seems extra soft on these, real nice as we head into fall with cooler riding and the occasional need for a nose wipe from the cold.

i thought it was great until it broke (the press part is what broke). now i use it to hold pens and pencils in my kitchen. I don't know if someone else broke it without telling me, but i got it out to use one day and it was broken. I never even used it very much. hopefully mine was just a lemon. I know friends who have had better experiences.

The North Face Rock 22 Bx Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 October 2, 2008

Still my go-to favorite. I have an MSR hubba hubba too, but save that for when i really need the ultra light experience. This tent has served me well and i think it's the best design (two doors so you're not stepping on anyone to get out, two vestibules for each person's gear, pockets around the inside, simple two pole design). It has held up quite well in the rain too. Recently i was up in Idaho and it rained so hard it woke me up twice, but the fly stayed off the tent walls and everything inside was nice and dry.

a little more fitted than i was hoping, but still a good fit, not too tight. I find it realy comfy for hiking in. it's hard to see the pattern in the pic, but it has a pattern to it (i thought it was some kind of waffle weave in the photo, but it's a smooth fabric, with a pattern).

Laken Hit Bottle - 1L

Rating for this product: 4 September 30, 2008

nice and light. i wanted a straw style drinking top but this one is still nice. actually its nice to just pour it in and not have to worry about dumping it (like wide mouth nalgene) or needing to suck on a straw (camelbak bottles).

not sure if the plastic top is going to hold up in the long run. the hinge already seems a little loose.
