It's just so foldable and easy to take anywhere. Ready to go after a bike ride, fits perfect in my camera pack in case I need it later in the day (and since the bill is split I don't have to worry about destroying it or mangling it) and is light and perfect for hiking in. OR is crushing it these days, keep up the good work!

I bought a pack for my boyfriend to use biking and he got holes in them on the first use (at least 2 of the three pairs). I don't know if there is something going on in his shoes, or if he was man-handling them, or if he just got a lemon pack... but unfortunately they did not work out.

Patagonia Active Mesh Bra - Women's

Patagonia Active Mesh Bra - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 September 14, 2009

Comfy enough I bought a 2nd one.

The fabric is a little heavier than I was expecting, but the seamless-ness is really nice and comfy. So comfy that when I burned my shoulders by accident one weekend, this was the only bra I could wear until my burn went away.

I use it for hiking and biking, and plan to wear it skiing. It wicks and dries better than the seamless Champion bras I have been wearing (which are still great, but I think the Patagonia will be better in the winter for that reason).

Sigg Traveler 1.0L Bottle

Sigg Traveler 1.0L Bottle

Rating for this product: 4 September 14, 2009

Bought this for my boyfriend but he left it at my house... so i started using it and found out that I really love it. I thought... "whatever it's just another water bottle" but the smaller mouth is much easier to drink from than a nalgene, my water tastes great, and the finish on the outside of the bottle is just nice and classy.

My only complaint is that there are a few too many threads in the screw top. I like to get to my drinking water a little faster than that. I would compare it to the Laken bottles... easier to get at your water especially nice when you are really dehydrated or just want a really quick drink. It sounds nit-picky but those kind of details can be really nice.

So glad these finally came back into stock. I recommend buying one now if you are considering it cause they sell like hot cakes and for good reason!

The only bowl or plate I ever take camping now. Slides right into my pack or dry box, no more trying to find other things to nest into the bowl that never really fit right.

Platypus Platy Bottle

Platypus Platy Bottle

Rating for this product: 5 September 14, 2009

I just bought my second platy bottle and the new ones are made of a newer and seemingly more durable material (though I have yet to have a problem with my first one). They also have a slightly different shape with a loop near the mouth to grab on to or clip to a biner. I'm not sure if BC has mixed stock of old and new designs, but it was the 1.0L regular screw top close top.

I like to use them for extra water on long bike rides, or freeze before a camping trip to use as ice pack in the cooler and eventually for drinking water in the next day or two.

agree... best for slim figures

Patagonia Margot Dress - Women's

Patagonia Margot Dress - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 September 14, 2009

I had the same problem as some previous reviewers... too clingy/tight in the waist/stomach area. It fit perfectly up top, but unfortunately not enough flow of fabric out from the empire waist (which would usually be the perfect style for my body shape, but sadly not with this particular dress). Otherwise it's really cute and the fabric has a nice feel.

So... recommended if you are on the slim side, and not recommended if your middle is your "problem area."

Rating for this product: 3 September 14, 2009

Much like the spoon... I feel like a kid eating with this fork. It is oversized in the handle and the fork/tines part itself, using it feels clumsy. It gets the job done, but won't be my preferred fork.

GSI Outdoor Spoon

GSI Outdoor Spoon

Rating for this product: 3 September 14, 2009

This spoon has the feel of a kid spoon to me. Not that it is small, but the way kid spoons have that extra coating of plastic and are shallow (as other reviewers noted). On the plus side it nests nicely with the matching fork, but on the down side, it's not the most comfortable to eat with. Better than a throw-away plastic spoon, and gets the job done, but not the first spoon I would reach for. It looks like a normal shape in the picture, but the angle of the photo is a little deceiving I think.

The North Face Crescent Sunshine Hooded Sweatshirt - Women's

The North Face Crescent Sunshine Hooded Sweatshirt - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 September 14, 2009

I love this hoodie but had to return it. I ordered an XL which is usually perfect or big for me coming from TNF, but this one was very tight in the stomach/waist area and would have been awful for layering. If they made a 2x I would exchange it, but they don't. Smaller size ladies might want to consider sizing up.

As far as construction, it is a nice thick fleece, and the buttons have a hidden zipper so you don't have to do up the buttons every time if you don't want to bother.

The North Face Wohelo Sandal - Women's

The North Face Wohelo Sandal - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 September 14, 2009

I have worn my 1st pair of TNF flip flops (from last summer) so much I needed to get a second pair. I have not worn out the old ones yet, but they are so comfy I just wanted to get a 2nd pair in a different color (and then be ready for the day when the 1st pair does need to be retired).

The straps are really comfy, and the footbeds conforms to your feet so nicely. TNF did a great job with these. I went with a 9, which is sizing down a half size for me from my sneaker size of 9.5 As the footbeds wear-in they get just a touch wider and longer, so they end up perfect.

Coleman Expandable Water Carrier - 5 Gallon

Rating for this product: 4 September 14, 2009

Overall a nice thing to have, and nice that it collapses so you can wait to fill it up when you get to your destination and empty it and collapse it before packing up to go home. I did have to tighten the cap extra hard to make sure it wasn't leaking. So the gaskets or whatever could be better (not even sure if it has one, maybe would be a useful addition. But overall a good thing to have.

Sierra Designs Y-Peg Tent Stakes

Sierra Designs Y-Peg Tent Stakes

Rating for this product: 5 May 28, 2009

I lost a few stakes on my 2nd to last camping trip so I bought a pack of these to fill in where needed. I used 4 of them to stake down the guy lines for my tent last weekend and my tent did not budge (it's a TNF rock 22). In contrast, my friend's big agnes 4 person tent blew 1/4 to a 1/2 mile across the desert, while another friend's tent (that was anchored with guy lines around rocks) blew on it's side, and our BD megamid shelter also blew over (though the stakes did stay in the ground for that guy).... but you get the idea... it was REALLY WINDY! I'm sure tent design was a large factor, but I'm sure the stakes helped tremendously as well.

Yakima Little Joe 3 Bike Rack

Rating for this product: 5 May 28, 2009

I wrote a review back in 2007 and since then my little joe was stolen (out of my garage along with some beloved bicycles) but I thought i would come back to say I bought another one because I still loved it so much and found it so useful for maximizing the capacity of bikes on my car (a subaru impreza outback sport wagon). When you can carry five bikes (3 with the little joe and 2 on the roof) you can save gas money on the way to the trail!

Columbia Sun Goddess Tank - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 28, 2009

I bought this one in green to use mostly for biking and some hiking and I liked it so much I ended up buying a second one in blue. It has a nice relaxed fit, is the perfect weight for summer, and does not cling like a lot of other tech top materials. The shoulders are wide enough to comfortably wear my small camelback style pack for biking and the diagonal/asymetrical line is a really nice touch so it's not so boring.

I bought these in a 9.5 (my usual shoe size) and they fit fine, but when i looked down on my feet they seemed to look more like long narrow bowling shoes so I ended up returning them. Outdoor Research Sonnet Cap - Women's

Outdoor Research Sonnet Cap - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 27, 2009

I have gotten a TON of compliments on this hat and I am always so stoked to say it's made by Outdoor Research.

I originally bought this to wear hiking or after biking when my head is all sweaty and dirty, but it's so cute and comfortable that I decided I should get a 2nd one to keep clean for every day use at work or out and about. Sadly the green one is sold out!

I have one suggestion for OR though... the zipper pull on the stash pocket was kind of annoying against my head because of the direction that it zips when it it closed. I just leave the pocket open so the zipper pull is under the flap that lines the bottom inside of the hat and it's not a problem, i never notice it anymore, but maybe for future versions they should reverse the direction of the zipper.

I also bought the size Large because women's specific hats NEVER fit my head (they are always too small) and I had to exchange this for a Medium. If it helps for reference, I also wear a size medium in Giro helmets (both ski and bike).

I hope OR makes more of these in even more color choices for next season.

Will this fit on any hydration system hose or only Platypus brand?

tweak: the real question is.. is a platypus hose a different size than a camelbak hose or a nalgene hose or do all the companies use a standard size hose for their hydration systems? saying it was designed only to work on a Platypus hose doesn't mean it can't work on another hose, we just need to know the hose size, right?

Still great, but personally loved last year's version a lot better

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 April 10, 2009

Still a solid choice, but last year's version was a lot better. They are both long which is great for a base layer top so it is less likely to ride up, but this newer one is tighter in the hip/butt area which is not as functional for most women (hello people, women have hips!) so it tends to ride up a little anyway, despite the length. I have to try and stretch this one out a little before wearing it unlike the one I purchased last year which is still a perfect fit.

Last year's color choices were a lot better too, loved the charcoal one especially and do not like having such light colors in my base layers (this year's). It would have been nice to have one darker color option available. And normally I would be all over a green option, but that "guacamole" looks like vomit. Sorry guys!

To end on a high note, i still love the material and the weave they use. A nice flat smooth finish to this merino that is more like a jersey knit (but not as stretchy as cotton jersey) and good flat lock seems. And performance of the merino during activity is stellar.

LOVE at first sight

Black Diamond Shiva Alpine Touring Boot - Women's

Black Diamond Shiva Alpine Touring Boot - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2009

I also LOVE LOVE LOVE these boots so far. The ONLY thing I have done to them is to put my own footbeds in them and wear them around my house for a couple hours before skiing on them, and the first day on snow was awesome.

I tried on the Scarpa Domina, Scarpa Diva, and Garmont Xena and NONE OF THEM fit. Mostly it was a problem with my amazon calves. All of those boots had the buckles moved to their biggest settings and it was still a HUGE struggle to close them only to lose all blood flow. I was starting to think I would never be able to have a dynafit set up if I wanted to. I tried on the Shiva and it fit pretty close, AND it had two more spots to move the buckles over (i ended up moving them one bigger).

They were hard to get into at first with the BOA lace over the tongue and all the heel padding, but I quickly discovered all you have to do is pull up on the tongue and your foot slides right in (there is a band of elastic over the base of the tongue). If you put it in walk mode first it's even easier.

I was skiing a Salomon Rush 9 previously (claimed to be a 90 flex) and had spent mucho dinero on getting them fitted. The Shivas ski just as well if not better out of the box (with my own footbeds) and I would say they have a similar flex (BD says these are 110).

I have about 20 days on them so far and the liners seem to have packed in a bit so I am glad i did not get them heat molded. If it becomes a problem i will surely update my review.

Our snowpack has been super sketch until just recently so I have not taken them out on any tours, just skiing in-bounds (which should give you a good idea of how awsome they are for the pure pleasure of skiing), but will also update after a few hikes.

Final thoughts... the buckles are super smooth, and my feet are super happy. I want to go skiing now just so I have an excuse to use my new boots!

I usually end up buying mens' pants that have a more relaxed fit, like the helly hansen agenda pant to work with the "junk in the trunk". And I have a friend who likes the Sessions brand mens' pants. I understand not all women like the baggy look, so to that end, I have found some luck with the north face and columbia women's line running a bit roomier than other brands. I had some TNF women's freedom pants that worked out pretty well, might look into those? Good luck, I know how you feel!!!

Helly Hansen Agenda Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 11, 2008

i like the fit of these, nice and relaxed, but i was really bummed to find out they do not have ANY vents as stated in the tech specs. I have had previous year's models of the same pant that also had inner leg vents, so i assumed they would have them by that fact as well. But no. They are really harshing my ventilation mellow.

Aside from that, the fit is great, nice and loose, the VELCRO on the cargo pocket is burley and because they have the waist adjuster tabs i don't have to wear belt if i don't want to. I have been wearing my last pair for 3 years and they finally gave up on keeping the water out, so it's nice to have a new pair that is waterproof again.

Pearl Izumi Zilch Cycling Glove - Full-Finger - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 October 2, 2008

i measure 7 inches from tip of middle finger to wrist and 4 inches across my palm (8 inches around the palm), and i wear a size Large. i find the base of the fingers to be a little on the snug side but maybe i haven't worn them in enough yet (i have another pair of PI gloves that don't have this problem, so maybe i am forgetting about the break-in period). I like the big cush padding in the base of the palm and the reinforcement at the base of the fingers. I wish they would put padding in that part that doesn't fall apart like their other gloves (i.e. similar design to the padding they did use in the palm) but that's just me. I don't see why we have to assume calluses are normal when they can be prevented with a little bit of padding (they just need to make the padding quality.... the best gloves i ever had were a pair of Scotts but those seem REALLY hard to find in the US for some reason.) anyway....on another high note, the soft fabric for the nose-wipe thumb seems extra soft on these, real nice as we head into fall with cooler riding and the occasional need for a nose wipe from the cold.

I know friends who have had better experiences.

The North Face Rock 22 Bx Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 October 2, 2008

Still my go-to favorite. I have an MSR hubba hubba too, but save that for when i really need the ultra light experience. This tent has served me well and i think it's the best design (two doors so you're not stepping on anyone to get out, two vestibules for each person's gear, pockets around the inside, simple two pole design). It has held up quite well in the rain too. Recently i was up in Idaho and it rained so hard it woke me up twice, but the fly stayed off the tent walls and everything inside was nice and dry.

a little more fitted than i was hoping, but still a good fit, not too tight. I find it realy comfy for hiking in. it's hard to see the pattern in the pic, but it has a pattern to it (i thought it was some kind of waffle weave in the photo, but it's a smooth fabric, with a pattern).

Laken Hit Bottle - 1L

Rating for this product: 4 September 30, 2008

nice and light. i wanted a straw style drinking top but this one is still nice. actually its nice to just pour it in and not have to worry about dumping it (like wide mouth nalgene) or needing to suck on a straw (camelbak bottles).

not sure if the plastic top is going to hold up in the long run. the hinge already seems a little loose.

Smith Interlock Trace Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 September 30, 2008

These were my boyfriends, but he left them at my house one day and now they are mine, hahaha. They have nice full coverage for mountain biking (which is what i use them for), the wood tort frame looks pretty cool, and polarized is always nice to have. I thought the brown was too warm/brown/orange at first, but once your eyes get used it, they are great. They fit great and stay on during biking just fine. overall i have a medium sized head for comparison.

Columbia Mountain Tech Top - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 September 30, 2008

I also bought the gin color and i am brunette and think it goes great. it is NOT lime green. I would say it might be a little lighter than the picture, but it all depends on how color calibrated your monitor is. anyway, i love the T, i wear it mostly for biking and sometimes for hiking. It has a nice relazed fit (i HATE tight body hugging tech Tees) this has nice contours and wicks well. I know some people think Columbia is lame, but their Titanium line is awesome and such great prices. I am considering getting another one, i wish they other two colors weren't so pastel pink and yellow. A blue would be nice.

Big Agnes Sleeping Giant Memory Foam Deluxe Pillow

Rating for this product: 4 September 30, 2008

love the memory foam. i was using a kelty synthetic camp pillow which was pretty good, but now i put that in the big agnes memory foam sleeve (i actually just bought the kit and not the inflatable pillow). I like having the extra pillow height cause i usually sleep on my side when camping. My camping is usually car camping on various biking trips so i'm not worried about the weight. I'm really interested in their memory foam sleeping pad kit too, just need them to get the bigger size in for my sleeping pad. (i have friend who uses it and swears by it)

fyi on the fabrics... they are slightly different. the blue is a little softer and the brown has a pattern/weave, it seems a little bit thicker. The inside fabrics on both seem to be the same amount of snuggly soft though.

Oakley Crowbar Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 September 30, 2008

if you need a goggle for low light cloudy blizard-type days, the crowbar with the H.I. Yellow has been perfect for that. I thought they seemed a little big at first, but with a helmet that all gets balanced out and the extra air space between you head and the actual lens is good for air circulation. I have been really really stoked on these.

i was pretty dissapointed in the fit in the hips. the XL is plenty big in the shoulders and chest, actually almost too big, but way too tight in the hips. If you have hips you might need to size up. I ended getting a mont bell men's jacket instead. the rest of the jacket seemed great, i was just bummed on the fit.

SmartWool Midweight Boot Top Bottom - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 September 30, 2008

these are great, boot top or 3/4 length is really the way to go for skiing/snowboarding. I had been sold on the icebreaker 3/4 bottoms but when i ordered a new pair they had this new tighter (sausage roll inducing) waist-band. These smart wools do not, they have a wrapped comfortable waist band. So these will be my new go-to bottoms. they also don't seem to stretch out as much as the ice breakers did.

SmartWool PhD Running Ultra Light Micro Sock - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 September 30, 2008

It seems like socks are never as "ultra light" as you would expect from a description like "ultra light." So i expected them to be a little thinner. Not that bad though, very supportive, quality fabrics. I might go up a size next time as i am right on border of sizes. I wear a 9.5 and the medium is suppose to go up to 9.5, but they feel really snug in the forefoot and heel so I might go for the L next time.

JanSport Guide Bag

Rating for this product: 4 September 30, 2008

this is a great little purse/messenger bag, it is kind of between the two on size. when you lift up the flat there is a great organizer pockets for ID and cards, i was using mine for business cards as i would still keep my credit cards, etc in my wallet inside. the main pocket is big enough for an exta layer if it is a thin layer, like a thin merino wool layer or something. Not saying everyone walks around with one of those, but to give you an idea it would be big enough for that plus your wallet, keys, cell phone, checkbook, and a few extras. Not huge, but big enough. Also the strap gets plenty long to go over the shouler/across the chest style.

Volkl Gotama Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 September 30, 2008

This ski is still my go-to-ski, or "daily driver" as someone else put it. going into year number three riding a pair of gotamas. Every once in a while I wish i had something fatter for those uber deep days, but as far as a one quiver resort ski for living in Utah, this is my true love. It's funny...sometimes i get comments on the lift from out of town skiers saying "ohh, you brought out the fat skis today.." and they seem shocked when i tell them, "no, actually I ski these every day." They will rail groomers when you need them too.

Some people mentioned light enough for touring, but i prefer a much lighter ski for touring (i carry a small boat load of camera gear though, so i try to keep everything else as light as possible). Maybe for side-country touring, I could see the use?

Shimano America Disc Brake Mineral Oil - Bleed Kit

Rating for this product: 4 September 30, 2008

not sure what you can really say about this... i have heard other brakes suck to bleed in comparison but these are the only ones i have tried. I'm glad there are bleed kits available though so i don't have to always for it at a shop cause i am PO'. Also, not pictures, the kit comes with a plastic bag, but you can use any sandwich bag. I also used a twist tie and a paper clip to keep it in place. Oh... and there are no actual instructions on bleeding your brakes, so if this is your first time you will need to look that up somewhere us. Parktool has a really good step-by-step info page with a couple pictures.

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 250 - 9070cu in

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 250 - 9070cu in

Rating for this product: 4 July 24, 2008

Got the Medium for weekend camping trips to bike/hike/canyoneer etc. So far it's been the perfect size. I can fit my sleeping bag, pad, and camp pillow inside along with the clothes i need so I don't have so many random things strewn about the car on the way down, and I'm also not taking up more than my fair share of cargo space from friends I travel with.

I've only been using it half a summer so I can't say exactly how well it stands up over time, but it seems pretty bomber and I'm not afraid to drop it in the dirt/sand/whatever around camp.

Like one other review I read, the plastic tab holding the small bit of cord to the zipper pulls came off which makes the one zipper harder to open/close. Not the biggest deal, but I think something like that should have lasted a LOT longer.

I wasn't sold on the backpack straps at first and the lack of a regular shoulder strap, but i live in an upstairs apartment, and the backpack straps have proven quite useful and comfortable for getting my crap down to the car and loaded.

Rating for this product: 5 July 24, 2008

I had been using a dakine heli pack for day hikes and was very unhappy with it (harsh on the shoulders, zippers hard to access). The Talon is so much better. It is lighter to start with, the straps and back panel are light and airy, great for hot summer days, the zippers are plenty easy to access and use, etc. Plenty of room for a layer, water, sandwich, first aid kit, etc. It's just perfect for day hikes.

Pearl Izumi Symphony Full-Finger Glove - Women's

Pearl Izumi Symphony Full-Finger Glove - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 June 13, 2008

I now have 21 rides on these gloves and have found a few breakdowns now. The strip of padding that runs along the base of the fingers has gotten worked pretty good. It is hard to describe but has kind of folded in half beneath the fabric of the palm which results in lumpier padding. The wrist is meant for skinnier wrists and the velcro is not strong enough to make up for that, so it comes undone often.

There are things I still like about these gloves, such as the mesh fabric between the fingers and the abundance of nose-wiper fabric on not just the thumb, but the index finger as well. Those parts are great, but I think I will buy a different glove next time on account of the padding issues.

I would still recommend them for a more casual rider, but not if you are riding 4+ days a week.

If you aren't afraid of Nalgene bottles yet, this is a sweet top (or if you need to replace one for the CamelBak bottle). Rating for this product: 5 May 13, 2008

Recently I needed to fit an overnight trip into a daypack and this bowl came in super handy. It was the last thing to get shoved in, and it was no problem. I think it's even bigger than my old camping bowl that didn't fold up which was awesome for containing all my dinner noodles. And since it can withstand up to 300 degree temps i left my mug at home, too. I haven't given the cutting board base any action yet, but it looks bomber.

MontBell Ultralight Down Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 13, 2008

i tried on a bunch of lightweight down jackets to use for layering, winter camping, ski touring, emergency layer, etc and this one came out on top. It was half the weight and a lot less money than the others I looked at and it packs down smaller, too. After using it I am stoked that I made the right choice. I find myself wanting to wear it for any reason i can find and my roommate has threatened to steal it, too. The only thing I could possibly complain about is that the arms seems to be on the big side, but it doesn't bother me at all (and might be good to know for those tall people out there).

Sea To Summit Sil Cordura Ultra-light Compression Sacks

Rating for this product: 4 May 13, 2008

I was able to fit my 15 degree 800 fill down sleeping bag perfectly into the size small and after cranking down a little the whole thing fit perfectly into the bottom on my day pack. I decided to use the size medium one that I bought for my MSR Hubba Hubba tent and found that without putting the poles in, i could have easily used a small for my tent as well. I will probably buy a few more of these since they are so light and so helpful in packing. The only minor complaint I could say is that the sil-nylon is not the most durable fabric in case you end up strapping one of these to the outside of your pack for some reason you would want to be careful of what you might brush up against.

Also, they seemed a bit on the snug side as I started that first ride, but seem to be perfect fit now and i love the soft nose-wipe material and the fact that it is not just the thumb but the index finger too. Nice touch.

Icebreaker BodyFit200 Legless Bottoms - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 April 8, 2008

they changed the waist band and the fit on these. I have 2 older pairs, a large and an XL that both fit great. I actually have to fold over the waist on the XL, but i have always preferred that because it reduced the whole "sausage-waist" effect of most base-layer waist bands. But the XL pair i just bought are smaller than my old size Large and the waist band is skinny and tight and really uncomfortable. I am SO SO sad that I will have to return these as I love the old ones so much.

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 25, 2008

i went ahead and gave this the test of a good 4 or 5 days of wear before washing (including one epic 12 hour drive in a snowstorm). I can't say it smelled like roses cause it didn't. but it didn't smell at all, so it passes the test.

as far as fit, it's great. if you go a few days it will stretch a little bit, but not beyond pure comfort.

and the fabric/weave of this merino is really nice. To compare it to an older icebreaker oasis crew that i have (which is awesome, don't get me wrong), the icebreaker is more of a fine rib knit and the backcountry merino is more of a smooth weave, so it feels nicer to the touch.

it's the only top i've worn skiing since i bought it.

Just WOW.

Pieps DSP Smart Transmitter

Pieps DSP Smart Transmitter

Rating for this product: 5 October 1, 2007

WOW. Not sure how you could not love this beacon. It will still take some practice, like any other beacon to nail down the multiple burials, but it's so cool that it can display the number of signals in a given distance, and the upgradeable software is prime. I bought mine last year before a couple upgrades came out and had the software updated, no problem. The included CD that explains how the DSP works more accurately , especially as you get into your pin point search is great too.

The only thing i miss from my last ortovox M2 beacon was that the ortovox automatically turned on anytime you strapped it on which was a really nice feature, but as long as you and your buddies are in the habit of checking each other's beacons (and you should be every time you go out) then it shouldn't be an issue. Also, i think the ortovox M2 was easier access being worn closer to the waist where you could easily reach up and under your jacket without having to unzip your jacket to get your beacon and put it in search mode, but again, just practice with the DSP, i think the other features of the DSP far outweigh those two criticisms.

i will be honest, i bought this bottle to use at work and have not really put it "through the ringer" outside at this point. BUT, you need to stay hydrated if you play outside on a regular basis and having a straw for some reason helps me to drink a lot more water during the day than if i just have a wide mouth Nalgene and have to unscrew it all the time, dump water down my shirt, or let dust and whatever other randomness flies through the air fall in there if i leave it open. I have at least tested the leak-proof-ness by turning upside down and shaking violently. seriously, it was violent. And mine passed that test.

Yakima Little Joe 3 Bike Rack

Yakima Little Joe 3 Bike Rack

Rating for this product: 5 September 13, 2007

I already have two king cobras on my roof but wanted to be able to shuttle more bikes when needed. I bought this before a weekend trip that was nothing but shuttle rides and i am SO STOKED on this little guy. I would dare to say i like it better than the super joe my friend has. Since there are no "bumpers" to set your bike in, you have a lot more options of how to rack newer frame styles that often have small triangles between the top tube and the down tube. For my bike, this means i don't have to hang my bike where it will be sitting on any of my cables because i can fit the rack through that triangle. I also think that being able to nest the bikes closer together makes the whole thing really stable. I have actually been REALLY impressed with how stable it is.I generally take the extra strap lengths (from where the rack attaches to the car) and tie those to the frame of the bike to keep them on the rack nice and tight, but buying some cheap bungee cords is not a bad idea either. As long as you have the bikes tied on tight though, they don't sway an inch while driving.

Bottom line, it's not about girth. Best little bike rack (especially for the money) and actually preferred over the beefier looking racks.

replaced the reefs

The North Face Wohelo Sandal - Women's

The North Face Wohelo Sandal - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 September 13, 2007

I've worn through part of the top layer on my reefs but couldn't find the same/similar ones from reef to replace them with, so i decided to try these and cross my fingers that they would be as comfy and mold as well to my feet as the reefs and they have done just that. I got the brown ones, a lot of people have complimented them as well. ALso, i wear a 9.5 and the size 9 has worked out perfect (it seemed a tad small at first, but since they mold like the reefs, the foot bed kind of spreads out a bit, so now they are perfect)

The North Face Essential Kami Sandal - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 September 13, 2007

usually i go down to a 9 if a 9.5 sandal isn't an option, but for these i'm going to have to exchange for a 10, my little toes spread off the sides. Otherwise they are really cute in person and the construction seems really durable.

easy removal for less wind drag

Yakima Horizontal Mighty Mount - Set of 4

Yakima Horizontal Mighty Mount - Set of 4

Rating for this product: 5 July 5, 2007

i've had this type of mighty mounts for 3 different cars now (they were all outback sports, but different years have slightly different sized bars) and for two different bike racks (an older one similar to the raptor and the new king cobra). Using them with the king cobra has been great. Really easy to attach to the cross bars and equally as easy to attach the bike rack. I used to leave my bike rack on ALL the time, but this set up is easy enough to remove that i can take it off or put it up in about five to ten minutes for non-bike-related road trips when i want less wind drag.

Platypus Platy Bottle DO NOT USE

Platypus Platy Bottle DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 July 5, 2007

I bought one of these so i could take back-up water supply for long, hot, and dry bike rides. The size/shape will fit in the main compartment of my hydration pack much better than a nalgene or other round water bottle and when it's empty you can fold it up and not have the clunk factor of still carrying an empty traditional water bottle. I have also used it for backbacking where it is equally great for the same reasons. I bought the regular top figuring i would empty it into my hydration bladder when i needed more water, but i'd like to get a sport top version as well for time when i'll end up drinking straight from the Platy bottle itself.

Bad for hiking, AWESOME for rivers.

KEEN Venice H2 Sandal - Women's

KEEN Venice H2 Sandal - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 July 5, 2007

So far i've tried these sandals on a few short hikes, an overnight backpack trip through a gulch that requires walking in an average of 5 cm of water, and on a couple river trips.
For general hiking, i do NOT like them. Little rocks get in there and they can't get out because of the toe protection and I would have to stop and take them off all the time to remove the rocks (i've tried to work out a few methods to shake them out, but most of the time you need to stop to extract them). I had the same problem in the gulch hike, and ended up hiking barefoot most of the time in the water when the surface was mostly sand and small rocks, although for areas that required hiking around waterfalls on slickrock, i felt the traction was pretty good.
For rivers they are, of course, GREAT! Used them on the green river, and two portions of the payette river. We dumped our boat on one occasion and i was never fearful for my toes/feet and walking through the rocky river bed whenever we were launching, or stopping for lunch, or whatever, was never a problem, in fact you can move fast with more confidence (than in open toe sandals) in times when you need to get to shore in a hurry.
i'm rating them at 4 because i'd give them a 1 or 2 for hiking and a 5 for river use and i know they are mostly intended for river use, but they've been hyped up a lot for multi use on trails (make sure your trails are ultra smoooooth or paved and they might be fine).

comfy and dry.

Sierra Designs Womens Solar Flare Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Sierra Designs Womens Solar Flare Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 July 5, 2007

I've been using this bag since last fall. The 800 fill is really comfy and it kept me nice and warm on a frigid desert night in october the first time i used it and was really happy about that (i know i would have been a frozen popsicle in my old synthetic winter bag). Since then i've used it a bunch in Utah, Fruita, CO and recently in Idaho. We were camped pretty closed to a river in Idaho with no fly and I woke up to my tent mate asking if i was wet from the dew/condensation, but the drizone fabric worked perfectly to keep me dry inside and keep the down from getting wet.

A few things to note...

a) The zipper tends to get stuck and does not zip as smoothly as they intended. They are suppose to have "snag free zipper tracks" but mine seems to get hung up on the baffle quite a bit.

b)The "Regular" is made to fit someone up to 5'5" and i am exactly 5'5". The long is made for 5'11" which seemed excessive to me, but i now wish i had gone with the long for 2 reasons. For one, when my toes are pointed in the bag they are tight against the bottom of the bag, and second, since i am not a "skinny minny" (about size 14/16 up top) i would have loved the extra shoulder room in the long. I tend to end up sleeping on my side or stomach a lot too and would love to have the extra wiggle room, though i'm trying to learn to sleep on my back without moving as much, lol

c) The Bag comes with two straps on the bottom to go around your sleeping pad to keep you in place, but if you're like me and you move to your side these are useless because the pad with go with you or keep you from moving. If you can sleep on your back without moving, then im sure they are great.

Overall the good outweighs the bad and i really love this bag. (And the green fabrics/patterns are a really nice touch!)

Pearl Izumi SyncroFloat 2 Trail Running Shoes - Women's

Pearl Izumi SyncroFloat 2 Trail Running Shoes - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 July 5, 2007

I have the first model of the SyncroFLOAT and have loved them from day one. The SyncroFLOAT 2 however has not been as great for me. They do not feel as comfortable from the get-go, and they are not as comfortable while jogging as the original SynchroFLOAT, not to mention my pinky toes got "pins and needles". I'm continuing to use them for now to see if they just need more breaking in than my other SyncroFLAOT, and i'm trying to experiment with different lacing, but the laces are really short and doing something as simple and common as the runners loop leaves very little lace left to actually tie your shoes (and you can certainly forget about any kind of double knot).

Pacific Outdoor Equipment All Out Lite Sleeping Pad - Women's

Pacific Outdoor Equipment All Out Lite Sleeping Pad - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 5, 2007

I bought this for a recent backpacking trip to avoid taking my over-sized car camping pad. I was originally looking to get the Thermarest Pro Lite because I know a lot of people who love theirs, but I really couldn't justify the price of the prolite. I came across this POE pad and liked the sound of it, and the price!
I have only used it a couple nights but i couldn't be happier. I even fell asleep on it at home by accident the first night i had inflated it before i was going to pack it the next day. The baffles on the side that are suppose to keep the heat in also help to keep you in the middle of the pad (and i usually have issues sliding off the sides of my pads -hence my oversized car camping pad- and even when i was a little 12 year old i would fall off, but i don't fall off the sides of the All Out Lite.
i haven't used it enough to report on durability over time or inflated it enough to speak to it's self inflation but will report back when i have. But so far, i can't see why anyone wouldn't want this pad for backpacking!

The North Face Vaporwick Bella Sport Tank Top - Women's

The North Face Vaporwick Bella Sport Tank Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 5, 2007

This tank is definitely a new favorite of mine this summer. It's vaporwick, but it feels like jersey knit cotton, so it's really really comfortable. I wore it first for two days of backpacking and was really stoked on it (no issues under the pack straps). Since then i've used it for morning/evening jogs, the Wasatch Back Relay, and will more than likely use it for biking, too. I might even buy another one. I also really love that TNF is making technical clothes with cool asymmetrical print details.

Osprey Packs Ariel 65 Backpack - Women's - 3800-4200cu in

Osprey Packs Ariel 65 Backpack - Women's - 3800-4200cu in

Rating for this product: 5 July 5, 2007

I was able to borrow this pack for a weekend backpack trip and could not have been happier. I usually sweat a ton, but never noticed a sweaty back with their mesh back panel, so i guess it worked! A friend helped me shorten the torso length to make it fit me properly and it was really easy to do. I also really love how the waist belt cinch is set up to give you better leverage. I compared this to my friend's Arcteryx pack with your standard cinch type and the Ariel was SO MUCH EASIER to tighten and get as tight as you needed (the ariel was also MUCH more comfortable on the shoulders than my friend's arcteryx -she tried both and agrees on that point too). I am seriously considering buying this pack now, but if i don't get this one, it will definitely be one of the Ospreys.

Crocs Prima Shoe - Women's

Crocs Prima Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 July 5, 2007

the dress code at my work is pretty casual but i have to wear shoes that cover my toes and heels. I thought these would be a great alternative to sandals, but i can't stand wearing them for more than about 5 minutes. They just make my feet sweat. Even when im not moving and just driving my car, they sweat. Maybe if they had more air holes they might be better? They also squeak a bunch when you walk in them, sometimes creating a squeaky fart sounding noise. If you walk through a quiet room and you embarrass easily, well, be careful with your footsteps.

Columbia Smith Canyon Hooded Fleece Jacket - Women's

Columbia Smith Canyon Hooded Fleece Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 5, 2007

Until the weather got really hot, i was wearing this almost every day since i bought it. I used to think Columbia made kind of lame stuff, but their titanium line has really stepped things up technically and with great style. I have the green and love the color, love the stretch side panels, love the high neck, love the feel on the inside of the fabric, love the fit (it's a fitted cut/style but it's not tight at all, which is perfect). I use it for everyday, for after working out, for nights at the campsite... lovin it.

Perfect for all my rides

DAKINE Drafter Bike Pack 70oz Quick Disconnect - Women's - 700cu in

DAKINE Drafter Bike Pack 70oz Quick Disconnect - Women's - 700cu in

Rating for this product: 5 July 5, 2007

I needed a pack to carry a few more items than my shuttle pack would allow so i picked up the Drafter. The main pocket is big enough that i can put my collapsible Platypus "platy bottle" in their for those long rides when you're gonna need extra water and it also has inside organization pockets for tools, hand pump, energy bars, keys, etc. The hydration bladder made by Nalgene is my favorite bladder yet, i will use this bladder for hiking in larger packs too. It's way easier to open than the camel back bladders (i once had to use pliers cause my old camel back one was so stuck on there!) and the detachable tube is a really nice touch for refilling. The lock mechanism on the bite valve is nice and easy to use too. Flip it straight to lock, turn it 90 degrees to open.
I also like the helmet pouch, it's nice to have place for the helmet vs rattling around in the back of the car, and i guess there are some people who would take it off for climbing (not me, but whatever) so it would be nice for that. I put my arm guards in the helmet pouch last night for the climbing part of our ride and was able to easily pull them out the top without removing the pack from my back. I think shin guards would be too big to hold in there however and would end up hitting the back of your head if they even stayed in.
I haven't used my shuttle pack since i got the drafter. It's been perfect for all my rides (usually a bunch of climbing with a nice downhill payoff is my style) but sometimes get suckered into longer cross country rides and will most likely use it for some lift served as well.
Oh yeah, and it looks way cooler than any camelback style!

gets the job done, watch for a couple things

Yakima King Cobra Bike Mount

Yakima King Cobra Bike Mount

Rating for this product: 3 May 18, 2007

overall this is a great rack to have, but there are a couple things Yakima could improve on. For one, the locking red bolt up front to keep the front wheel holder in place will loosen while you drive. After driving the highway for 4 or 5 hours and then down a gnarly dirt road (driving pretty slow too as there were infinite amounts of potholes), my bike went crooked in the wheel holder, made a clunk sound from above, and almost fell off the roof. In their defense i think there is a disclaimer in the instructions not to drive on such roads, but c'mon.... Most people with the bikes they need this rack for will be driving dirt roads at some point. So I found out the hard way that you need to tighten that every time you stop, or stop and check if it's been a while and the road is about to get bumpier. Also, the bikes do seem to sway a lot at lower speeds around town. I've never had any problems with that by itself, but the noise of them on the roof is a little unsettling sometimes.

Other than that, this rack has been great. I have a lefty fork so it's harder to use a fork mount anyways, and it's really nice to not deal with taking off the front wheel. Getting the bike up and in the rack is relatively easy as well. It's nice that the back portion of the front wheel hold rocks up and into place automatically as you roll the bike forward and into the front hold. That way you don't have to balance the bike in place while you're messing with attaching and locking the rack.

Volkl Gotama Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 May 18, 2007

I guess they tweaked the 08 a little from the 07, but the 07 is a great ski. It took me a couple weeks to get used to skiing them coming from a really really light sugar daddy/freeride set up to a beefier gotama with rossi alpine binders. But after that break in period, i am IN LOVE. They will ski over pretty much anything, nice and stable.
