The North Face Power Stretch Glove

The North Face Power Stretch Glove

Rating for this product: 5 June 15, 2011

Great gloves, they can be used by themselves in mild weather, and they make a great liner when the weather gets really cold. They're also light and pack down small, so I always carry these any time I expect the weather might get chilly and I'd want some gloves. They can be a bit slippery when used on their own, since they lack any leather/rubber on the palms.

Good depth

MSR Alpine Stainless Steel Plate

MSR Alpine Stainless Steel Plate

Rating for this product: 5 June 14, 2011

Nice camping plate. It's a good size, very durable, easy to clean, and I like the high walls. It can pull double duty as a normal plate, and take the place of a bowl for your morning oatmeal. I wouldn't try to eat soup out of it, but it should function for just about anything else you'd use a bowl for.

I bought this plate over a cheaper/lighter aluminum plate because the depth allows me to leave the bowl at home and use this for both.

Very Usefull

Stoic WPF Compression Sack

Stoic WPF Compression Sack

Rating for this product: 5 June 14, 2011

Great stuff sacks; they allow you to compress things down significantly and save a lot of room in your pack. I agree with another reviewer, the best way to pack things in this is to lay it flat and compress everything that way, then you end up with a thin slab rather than a ball, which is much more packable. Waterproof is always a plus in case you get dumped on or need to ford a river. The valve makes it much easier to compress than most dry bags, since you can't ever seem to squeeze that last bit of air out after you roll the top.

I've got all 3 sizes, and they're all bigger than I had expected. I get the most use out of the medium. It's the perfect size for a couple days worth of clothes and some layers, or most sleeping bags (except big synthetics). The large is so big that I rarely find that I need to use it. If you're only going to get one, I'd recommend the medium.

Great Pants

Stoic Overhang Pant - Men's

Stoic Overhang Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 14, 2011

These are my new outdoor pants of choice. Super stretchy and comfortable, very breathable, pretty water resistant; small amounts of water bead and roll off (haven't had them in heavy rain yet). Lots of roomy pockets, which is always a plus, and the cargo pocket is pretty low key as far as cargo pockets go.

I'm 5'11, 160, a 31x32 pant. The medium fits great, I could wear it without a belt, but it would be a bit loose so I usually use a belt anyway. The knees are a bit unnecessarily loose. I wish the pants had the cut of the tour pants instead, they're stretchy enough that a less-roomy knee would be fine. Aside from that small complaint they're a great midweight softshell pant!

Nice Dry Top

Kokatat TROPOS Helix Dry Top - Men's

Kokatat TROPOS Helix Dry Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 14, 2011

Great dry top, just went kayaking in ~38 degree water with just this dry top and a 3/2mm wetsuit underneath, and stayed dry and warm the whole time, even after some rolls.

Fits well and doesn't restrict your movement at all, I'm 5'11'' 160 and the medium fits great. The chest pocket is nice and large, perfect place to stow keys, a power bar, even a camera (properly water-proofed).

The neck was very tight when I first got it, and it took about a week of stretching to get it use-able. Use something that's quite a bit bigger than your neck; 2-4 inches in diameter larger, and it'll stretch quicker.

Durability Issues

Stoic Merino Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 June 7, 2011

I bought this shirt on SaC, and took it on two 2-day trips with a ~30lb pack on. After the first trip the shirt had developed a few holes from rubbing against the snaps on the inside of my pants. For the second trip I decided to not tuck the shirt in to avoid the problem, but it then rubbed against the belt and developed more holes; it looks like I ran a cheese grater over the shirt (picture attached, w/ quarter for size comparison).

I liked the shirt, but for a shirt this price it needs to last more than 4 days of use. I contacted bc.com support about it, and they seemed to agree it was a warranty issue, but since I bought it on SaC they will not honor the stoic "lifetime warranty".

Long story short, don't wear this shirt with a pack. I really like the other stoic items I've purhcased, but I'm going to avoid their merino products from now on, and I'll likely be much more wary about purchasing any stoic products on steepandcheap.

No thigh vents, but these pants do have side zips on the ankles to make them easier to put on over boots.

Norrøna Stranda Insulated Pant - Men's

October 8, 2010

These pants don't seem heavily-insulated; they're not heavy or bulky. Haven't gotten to try them out to see how warm they are though.

Size wise, I'd say the sizing chart is a bit off. I'm about a 31" waist, 5'11, 160, I figured I'd try the small based off the chart. The waist itself is a little bit tight, and the hips and butt are very tight, and constrict my movement. Should have gone for the medium.

Awesome pants though, it's a shame they didn't fit. Materials seem high quality, lots of nice little details to them.

Evolv Talon G2 Climbing Shoe

October 8, 2010

I would agree with getting them according to your normal street shoe size. I ordered a pair a half size down from what I normally wear, and they were much too small. Gonna try to exchange them for my normal shoe size, and see if that works.

Update: I did exchange them for my normal shoe size, and they're still a bit tighter than I'd like, but they work. Go with your normal shoe size, and if you're in between sizes, go with the larger of the two.
