Primus Pot Gripper

December 1, 2009

Lifting a pot with water weighing together at over 10lbs. The pot gripper holds it well. Not its intended use, I believe, but it testifies of the quality of the pot gripper.

Oakley Fives Squared Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 5 March 28, 2010

This is my THIRD pair of Oakley Fives. They fit my small face and the optics are top-notch. They are very stylish too I think. I own the brown frames and lenses right now. This is a great option if you want high quality sunglasses for not so high a price.

Dynamic fit eh...

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Men's

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 13, 2010

I really set expectations too high when I got this jacket. I am returning the jacket as I write this but I will give my initial impressions on the jacket. First off, the fit is more like slim athletic than anything. The part where it just didn't work for me is in the hip area. I am 5'5" at 165lbs with an athletic build and I got a Medium. It's just tight and too restrictive for me. Layering a down jacket or fleece would make things worse too! If the jacket would have tapered in towards the waist and THEN flared out in the hip area, it would have been perfect. Getting a Large would maybe have fixed this issue, but sleeve length would have become problem for me.

The material is very thin and feels like it can't stand any prolonged heavy abuse. I would hate to rip up a $350 jacket!

Performance was the only thing I could not evaluate, but I believe that it's fantastic like they claim. If the jacket fit me better and felt more durable I would not hesitate to get this jacket again.

Big fan of the panel access system

Granite Gear Latitude Vapor Backpack - 3800cu in

Granite Gear Latitude Vapor Backpack - 3800cu in

Rating for this product: 5 December 17, 2009

For 3-4 day trips I can dial the weight of my gear and this pack to under 25lbs. The suspension system makes hauling the pack a comfortable experience. The frame, shoulder straps, and waist-belt are very well padded. All the contact points don't ever bring discomfort. Really find the panel access system very useful. I don't have to worry about where I put things too much since I can easily get to them when they are, let's say, at the bottom or middle of the pack. The pack feels very durable too despite it's light weight. Highly recommended pack for the minimalist and ultra-light hiker.

Burton AK 3L Skid Hi-Top Pant - Men's - 09/10

Burton AK 3L Skid Hi-Top Pant - Men's - 09/10

Rating for this product: 5 December 16, 2009

I will never settle for anything less than the performance of Gore-Tex Pro after wearing these pants. 12-12-2009 was an epic day at Mammoth Mountain, CA and perfect conditions to test out these pants for the first time. A storm dropped over 36" in 24 hours and temps were in the low 20's. It was flurrying ALL day and you were getting pummeled on the lift and mountain with strong winds and torrents of snow. The pants kept me COMPLETELY dry. Not a single drop of water or flake of snow could hang on to these pants. Windproof performance was excellent as well. All I had underneath them was an Icebreaker mid-weight underpant and that combo kept me comfortable.

I'm 5'5" with an athletic build and a small fits me perfect due to the nature of the AK fit. Don't like things to get too baggy and I'm glad the size I got worked out so well. The huge pockets are a great feature and I'm glad they came with the RiRi zippers. You will be thankful for the butt flap too.

These pants perform well above anyone's expectations and definitely deserves five stars.

Five Ten Spire Lace-up Climbing Shoe

Five Ten Spire Lace-up Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 4 December 10, 2009

Like you will read in all the reviews below, this is a great shoe to start with. You know your skills are growing when you feel that this shoe just doesn't cut it anymore. Things like, you need more edging support, more smearing grip, or this ain't the shoe to be using when climbing cracks.

Yes they are right when they say that this shoe will stretch out. Don't worry though, the lacing system will compensate for that and make sure you get the most out of that superb Stealth C4 rubber.

I recommend this shoe because it helped me love rock climbing.

Also great as a hiking bottom base layer

Icebreaker BodyFit 260 Legless Bottom - Men's

Icebreaker BodyFit 260 Legless Bottom - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2009

I used these as my base layer under a pair of Backcountry.com Overhang pants on a two day 22-mile hiking trip. Temps were in the 50-40 range while on the move and this merino piece excelled in temperature control and moisture management. While at camp, it got down to between 35-25 and the Overhang pants and this Icebreaker piece kept my legs comfortable and not chilly. In other words, my legs weren't as warm as I would have preferred, but they were not cold to my disliking either.

Like all fine merino clothing, this one kept the odors at bay just as well.

I will do another review on this piece after using it this winter season for snowboarding.

Outstanding piece from Marmot

Marmot Afterburner Fleece Jacket - Men's

Marmot Afterburner Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2009

I love gear that is made to do two things at once and does them both well. The 300 fleece feels really lightweight but don't be fooled. It's density will keep the warmth close to your skin. The Gore WindStopper material works and is very effective in keeping chilly wind out.

The fit is very versatile. I'm 5'5" at 165lbs with an athletic build and a Medium works perfect. The fit is not baggy at all and not too athletic. I can layer a nice lightweight down jacket with it (Montbell Alpine Light Down Jacket in my case) and not look and feel constricted.

If you want a fleece jacket that is very functional and also looks great, this is a good one to get.

Primus Pot Gripper

Primus Pot Gripper

Rating for this product: 5 December 1, 2009

Works well with my EtaPower 2.1L pot. Very sturdy and holds the pot well. I've tested its sturdiness by lifting a pot with water weighing at just over 10 pounds. Held up very well. Pun intended. In short, you can use this with a variety of other pots that you own and will work perfectly for its intended uses and a little beyond that.

Hoser 2L: Durable, lightweight, goes well with my Granite Gear Latitude Vapor

Platypus Hoser Hydration Bladder

Platypus Hoser Hydration Bladder

Rating for this product: 5 December 1, 2009

Overall a very good bladder. Works well for my needs. The flow rate is pretty good. The trick is learning to bite the valve the right way before you take a sip and you won't feel your lungs cave in, pretty crucial when your huffing and puffing at high elevations. On a recent trip I left the bladder almost full outdoors, overnight, and in freezing temperatures (didn't know that was going to happen though). In the morning there was no damage or deformity to the bladder due to ice. Durable. If you have an MSR Hyperflow, this bladder works well with that filter. The flow spout of the filter fits like a glove on the mouth of the Platypus. There's a good lightweight combo for ya! Water tastes great coming out of this bladder (i.e. good water in, good water out) and won't alter the flavor of anything you put in it. I interchangeably use water, Crystal Light, Propel, or Gatorade, etc. for hydration with this bladder and it will not hold the flavor of the last thing you put in it. I have friends that use older Platypus bladders and they've owned theirs for several years. I expect these bladders to last just as long. Highly recommended.

Quick and easy to setup

Sierra Designs Sirius 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Sierra Designs Sirius 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 November 25, 2009

What I really like about this tent is that I can setup up by myself in less than three minutes. Critical when you hike in areas where the weather can change on you sometimes with little to no warning and your friends are too frazzled to help because they are setting theirs up before it really pours down. The tent keeps you dry and won't let water and wind through even with heavy rain and strong winds.

This tent is very well made and I believe it will last me a long time.

I know this isn't a solo tent but I like having room. So, I'm willing to carry the extra backbreaking 2 pounds over a solo tent.

prAna Stretch Zion Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 21, 2009

I got these shorts initially for climbing and now they have become my go to shorts for hiking as well. You'll appreciate the stretch for the range of motion and freedom of movement that it gives. I'm 5'5" 165lbs and I wear a medium for this short. the leg room for this size is perfect for my build. I have owned these shorts for over two years and used them for a lot of activities and wear them casually a lot too. It has held up really well and I think they will last me a long time. These shorts are a great investment and will pay for itself many times over.

Works Efficiently

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Rating for this product: 5 November 21, 2009

There are reasons why this stove has received multiple awards. It works. It does what it's suppose to do. Boil water. And it does it fast. The efficiency of the stove helps you save fuel. I used it on a four day trip boiling an average of 6 cups per day. Even boiled water for my friends a few times on that occasion. Only needed one fuel canister and still had some left over. If you are straightforward and understand your needs, this system works really well and you will hardly have any gripes about anything.Get yours here, backcountry.com will treat you well.

Backcountry.com Stoic eVent Shell - Men's

November 21, 2009

eVent is more similar to Goretex Pro. I've tried a couple of Paclite items and they are definitely thinner and have a lighter feel than eVent.

To your benefit, I grabbed three items that I have (3L eVent, 3L Goretex Pro, and 2L Goretex Performance) and did a side-by-side evaluation. My conclusion was 3L eVent feels like a hybrid of the two Goretex fabrics in thickness and feel. Hope that helps and makes sense.

A+ for the A-Frame

Oakley A-Frame Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 November 19, 2009

Got mine in the Carbon Fiber/VR28. I love the VR28 lens and have owned two Oakley sunglasses with them. So it was only natural for me to get them for the A Frame. This goggle works! Fits great with no helmet and with one. I use it with my Giro G10 and it seems like they were made for each other. I recommend this combo if you are shopping for both. The optics like everybody below says are great and do not fog up. The VR28 warms everything up in your view and makes the scenery look even prettier. The lens also holds up well. I have not noticed any apparent scratches on mine and I've used them for several seasons. Highly recommended.

Great for rappeling but not for belaying

CAMP USA Synthetic Plus Belay Glove - Full Finger

CAMP USA Synthetic Plus Belay Glove - Full Finger

Rating for this product: 4 November 18, 2009

Provides great protection when rappelling, especially at higher speeds (I don't do that often and don't endorse that though).

I am disappointed with this glove when belaying though. It lacks grip and I feel that I don't have full control of the rope. I am afraid that if I ever have to catch a drop from a heavy person I won't have enough grip on the rope. That is my experience with this glove.

Zero Eyestrain

Smith Mogul Sunglasses - Polarchromic

Smith Mogul Sunglasses - Polarchromic

Rating for this product: 5 November 11, 2009

The Techlite glass lenses make a HUGE difference for me. I experience zero eyestrain wearing these bad boys. I wear my optics a lot whether driving, hiking, or just being outdoors, so not having to deal with eyestrain after wearing sunglasses for a long time is great. The extra scratch resistance of glass is a huge plus in the long run since accumulated scratches (bad refraction) on the lenses is part of what causes eyestrain. This is my first pair of Smith sunglasses (worn Oakleys exclusively for over seven years) and they are definitely a keeper. I would say that I would only switch back to Oakley if they made a more superior glass lens.

Wore these on a three day hiking trip in the Sierras 10/2009 and they performed great! Never felt uncomfortable after 24 miles wearing these pants and a Patagonia Cap3 base. I wore a small and they were a bit snug but the build of the pants and the stretchiness of the fabric gave it amazing freedom of movement. Protection from the elements proved to be really good as well. Great wind protection and water beads on the fabric and rolls away. Highly recommend these pants! BC products are great!
