Good Starter Shell

Mountain Hardwear Epic Jacket - Women's

Mountain Hardwear Epic Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 November 7, 2008

I bought an Epic about 4 or 5 years ago. I have used it for everything from hikes and daily use to trail rides and schooling shows. The sizing is nice--the sleeves are actually long enough for my gorilla arms, and the body length is nice.
Mine is the old Smoke Purple. It has held up pretty well. It can get a tiny bit clammy when I work really hard, but its not bad as far as the older stuff. The one thing to know is that after my long use, the waterproofing coating has started to peel off in chunks around the collar.

Lightweight and Durable

Outdoor Research Zealot Jacket - Men's

Outdoor Research Zealot Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

I bought this jacket to replace a MH shell I've beat the tar out of. I was impressed with the weight when I bought it, but I was concerned about durability as I am FAMOUS for shredding things (if its not me, my horses do it for me).
This jacket has now survived over a year of daily bumming around town wear, riding horses through deep brush, and downpours. I am quite impressed with it actually.
My only issue with this jacket is the lack of hand pockets. It gets frustrating at times, especially as riding breeches don't have pockets either. (I'm always shoving things in the pockets of my fleece underneath)
It also fits me relatively well. As a woman wearing a man's jacket, this can be tough. I needed the size in the shoulders for freedom of movement.
Overall a GREAT jacket.

Awesome Sink

Sea To Summit The Little Sink

Sea To Summit The Little Sink

Rating for this product: 5 September 8, 2008

I purchased the Little Sink for trail rides. There are times when I want to be able to give my horse water, but I also don't want him drinking muck. This makes an awesome travel dish for horses, our draft horse's muzzle even fits in it!
I was surprised how awesomely small this sink was packed when it arrived. It even goes back in its pouch after you take it out!

I'm sure it would make a great sink for washing dishes too, certainly big enough for 2-3 people worth of mess kit.

Great gear, whether you use it for its intended purpose or not!

I'm an avid hiker and equestrian who spends a great deal of time on the trail. These fit perfectly into my pack, my saddle bags or even my purse. This is good quality stuff and I've used it for everything from ripped packs to emergency horseshoe/hoof repair.

Awesome bag

DAKINE Messenger Bag - 800 cu in

DAKINE Messenger Bag - 800 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 December 8, 2004

I bought a large Dakine messenger in lieu of the traditional Timbuk2 bag and I am thrilled that I did so. The Dakine is just as organized, and waterproof, but it is a much more comfortable bag with the smooth seatbelt type strap and the included strap pad. The mobility of the cross strap is also appreciated, as it can be worn cross the heart or lower. This bag has also survived the trials of being an English Major. All in all it has all of the features of messengers that cost twice as much.
