Stoic Bombshell Bib - Men's

April 8, 2012

What's the best way to repair a tear in the Bombshell fabric (better than stitching it :) ?
Managed to pierce mine with a ski pole tip I think, would like to ensure the hole doesn't get bigger with use.

Stoic Breaker Fleece Hooded Jacket - Men's

Stoic Breaker Fleece Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 28, 2012

For some reason, the item description and most reviews do not mention a little thing about this jacket: it stretches (5% spandex).
Having owned another, unstretchable, Wind Pro jacket before, I didn't expect that, but it makes this one a whole lot better.
In other news, the fit is great and trim (82 kg/180cm, 40" chest, M is just right for wearing little to nothing underneath), deep color is pretty, it's thinner than some other Wind Pro jackets, but that only means you won't sweat as much should you decide to exert in it ;)

Mountain Hardwear Hestia Pant - Men's

January 16, 2012

What is the difference between this and the Bokta pant?
Outer fabric is described as different, but I'm unaware of the advantages/disadvantages of dobby weave vs regular ripstop (which I assume Bokta is made of)

Grangers XT Waterproofer

November 8, 2011

Suppose one doesn't have a tumble drier with heater.

What would work then to "activate" this treatment? Drying in the sun? Using a room heater fan in a small room to raise the temperature to 30C+?
Had poor luck with a previous version of this product (blue bottle), would like to know how to make my softshells repel water again.

Stoic Welder Lo Softshell - Men's

November 4, 2011

Could anyone elaborate on the sizing/cut changes compared to the same jacket of 2 years ago? I have the M from back then and it's pretty damn tight and hard to fit anything warm underneath (thick fleece, Stoic luft synthetic jacket), whereas M from most other brands fits me just fine (180cm, a little under 80 kg, 40" chest).

Julbo Pipeline Sunglasses - Zebra Antifog Polarized/Photochromic Lens

August 31, 2011

There's no mention of a polarized Zebra flavour on Julbo's site as far as I can tell.
Are you sure the description is correct?

Stoic Welder Lo Softshell - Men's

August 21, 2011

funny thing about the hood:
This jacket has the biggest one of all my jackets, but it's not big enough for my XL Giro G10 (the jacket is in M)
Just out of curiousity, does anyone make big enough hoods for this kind of physique? :)

Marmot Powder 8 Fleece Jacket - Men's

August 14, 2011

monkey man sure is hard to squeeze under an outer layer :) esp. something as trim and grippy on the inside as a Stoic Welder Lo :)
I hope this is more layering-friendly

Millet Radikal Pro Boot - Men's

August 9, 2011

dsilversto, I have these boots and I can say that in the thinner socks, I can feel the cable pressure on my instep very much once I cinch them all the way down, to the point of leaving bruises after just a couple hours of walking. The tongue is pretty thick but somehow it doesn't distribute the pressure all that evenly (either that, ot I have an abnormally bulging instep :)
Thick socks (the thickest I have, actually), however, mitigate this to a good extent.
And while on the subject of thick socks, I must also note that these boots feel noticeably narrower than other ones I have of the same size. My street shoe size is US 11, but I buy my boots in 11.5 to accomodate for the warm socks and size 11.5 Radikal Pros feel quite a bit smaller than my Salomon trekkers or winter boots (Salomon as well), but not *too small to wear* unless I put in thicker insoles.

So in short, you might wanna size up and wear some cushion inside these :)

Salomon XT Wings 2 GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

February 19, 2011

What are the changes from last year's model?
I bought that last spring and was kinda disappointed as it wasn't really waterproof out of the box and even a slight shower could seep in through the fabric on top of my toes.
The lacing wasn't solid enough either, it keeps slipping when I run, especially downhill and I have to stop to tighten it up every 10 minutes.
Because of those reasons it was relegated to everyday walkaround shoe and I'm still on the lookout for a proper waterproof and hopefully breathable running shoe with good grippy sole and toes protection so maybe the new model fixes those things.. anyone?

Stoic Luft Hoody Insulated Sweater - Men's

December 25, 2010

Thanks Adam,

I already broke and ordered a medium :)
Do you or anyone else know, by the way, if "100g Cirrus" refers to total insulation weight or density per m^2 (like they specify for Primaloft)?
Had a hard time comparing this to various PL jackets until I found it somewhere that PL weight listed in garment specs is actually density.

Stoic Luft Hoody Insulated Sweater - Men's

December 23, 2010

I noticed that Stoic size chart for this year has changed.
I am 5'10"/172 lb, with about 40" chest (44 if I puff up :) and last year's Welder Lo in Medium fits me with enough room for a thin layer or two underneath.
This model's size chart suggests I should get an L - is that so?
I'd like to be able to wear the Luft under a shell (a roomier one than Welder)

(I'm not in US so ordering 2 and returning the spare isn't an option)

Mountain Hardwear Transition Dome

Mountain Hardwear Transition Dome

Rating for this product: 5 November 16, 2010

Light, takes little room in your pocket, stops the wind, breathes a fair bit.
Took it and a Power Stretch beanie to a few days' hike in November (0-10C, sometimes snowy, sometimes windy), ended up wearing this one all the time.

Runs small compared to other Marmot jackets

Marmot DriClime Catalyst Jacket - Men's

Marmot DriClime Catalyst Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 16, 2010

I got ROM and Ramble shirt in M and both fit just loose enough for comfort.
This jacket, however, is as tight as it gets in the same size. Zipped up, it feels pretty restrictive to the point I have to pull the sleeves up myself for fear of tearing the back seams apart should I swing my arms forward a little too energetically. Stretch panels dont seem big or stretchy enough to allow complete freedom of movement and it rides up a hand or two's breadth when I raise my arms (angel wing movement my ass ;)
Apart from that, it looks more than adequate for wind protection but I haven't taken it out yet (and won't until spring as it's too cold now). Probably good enough to run around in.

Good, just not waterproof

Salomon XT Wings GTX Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Salomon XT Wings GTX Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 August 28, 2010

Bought them for running in wet weather, and turns out they let water through, even if they don't soak instantly. Despite the original factory DWR (if any) and a good dose of Nikwax fabric & leather waterproof spray I applied right after purchase, I can feel even the lightest drizzle seep in through the stretch of fabric between the base of the tongue and the toes.

Otherwise, very nice to walk around and run in.

Salomon B52 Dry WP Winter Boot - Men's

Salomon B52 Dry WP Winter Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 20, 2010

Almost two winters down the road, still great. These B52s are warm (from 0 to -40 celsius so far), light, durable, comfortable, much much better than the Columbia Bugaboots I had before them. Wearing them on the pavements, forest paths, to work, in the snow if there's no path, wherever the hell I want ;)
Upper still in one piece, no annoying stitches on the inside that rub against your ankle through any number of socks.Hopefully they'll serve me well a few more winters, but once they do die, I'll probably look no further than another pair of B52s.

Marmot Scree Softshell Pant - Men's

March 17, 2010

How warm/windproof are these?
Which pants are the warmest between these, MH winter wander, Marmot cortina and let's say Patagonia alpine guide?
Looking for fall/spring type windproof stretch pants I can wear from, say, +10 to -10 Celsius preferrably without a base layer.

Another requirement is durability as I'd like to wear them everywhere, including work where I mostly sit and jeans/any cotton pants wear through within 3 months around the rear seam near where it meets the inseams :) I got some other polyester pants which resist this kind of wear just fine but they don't stretch and have other drawbacks I don't really like.
