PNW Requirement!

Mountain Hardwear Effusion Hooded Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Effusion Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 30, 2012

This jacket should be mandatory for any outdoor athlete in the Pacific Northwest. I bought it primarily for running in the cold and rain during our long winter/spring months. I was worried that it wouldnt be breathable enough given that it is fully waterproof. So far I have been very pleased. Yes, you might get a little damp from sweat when pushing it up a hill, but compared to many other running jacket I have, this is much better.

I like how its waterproof, but doesnt stick to your arms after getting wet like other wind breaker type jackets that I have. It also has tapered sleeves which is nice for minimizing excess material. I sized it to fit with just a short sleeve wicking layer underneath since its primary function will be a running/biking jacket. I'm 5'10" 150lbs and got a medium. It fits perfectly for what I got it for. Feels a little snug with a long sleeve baselayer under, but I dont plan on ever needing a long sleeve underneath. I would have sized up if it was just a casual jacket. I also like the lack of bulky pockets. I dont need handwarming pockets when Im running or biking. I also like how this jacket doesnt come with the attached "gluff" (glove/cuff) like the non-hooded jacket has. I'd rather bring my own gloves if i need them and decrease the bulk at the end of the sleeve.

My only grips: sleeves are a little long, as with a lot of MHW product i try, maybe i have short arms. Second, I would have like either some velcro at the end of the sleeves or a more elastic cuff to keep the sleeve locked down. Minor annoyances with an otherwise flawless jacket. I also dont usually use a hood will running or biking, but its come in handy a few times so might as well keep it just in case.

Bottomline: This jacket enables me to train year round, stay out longer and keeps me happy. A worthy investment for anyone putting in work while in wet, windy, cold conditions.

Montrail Fairhaven Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Montrail Fairhaven Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 22, 2011

Not one of my favorite Montrail shoes to actually run in, but I love them for casual wear. In my opinion, they are fine for running on fireroads and regular road runs, but they were a little to cushy and bulky for any technical, off balanced trail conditions. However, I use mine all the time for casual use and love them for that. Montrail has better shoes to run in like the Rogue racer and the Masochist and Rock Ridges

Speedy shoe

Montrail Rogue Racer Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Montrail Rogue Racer Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 22, 2011

I've been running in these shoes for a year now and couldnt be happier. Lightweight, breathable and quick drying. The traction is great in dry, dusty, rocky conditions, but not so hot for anything too wet or muddy. But I always switch to the Masochists for these kinds of conditions anyway. I use these shoes for shorter runs (<20miles) as I like slightly beefier shoes for going long. But these shoes rip it up on shorter, faster attempts and are my first choice for short races and tempo training. I know lots of people who use these on runs up to 50 miles, but thats not the case for me. Maybe someday Ill work up to that, but for now, they are my go-to daily trail runner.

Waterproof, Breathable

Mountain Hardwear Epic Glove - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Epic Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 22, 2011

I've been using these gloves for a year now and have been very satisfied with the purchase. I use them primary for rainy conditions and some light snowy conditions, but nothing seriously cold. They have also excelled while mountain biking in rainy Pacific Northwest conditions. Its great to have a pair of waterproof gloves that aren't ski gloves or rubber gloves. The Outdry technology is amazing and 100% better than traditional Goretex material. Outdry eliminates the loose bladder seen in Goretex gloves and actually laminates the waterproof membrane to the outer layer. This ultimately leads to less water tension and increased breathability. Bottomline: great all around glove for wet and windy condition.

Black Diamond Verdict Ski

November 21, 2011

Hi there,

Thinking about getting these skis, however, I'm not sure what size to get. 170cm or 180cm? I'm 5'10'' 150lb. Originally, I wanted 175s, but that's not an option for these skis. I tested the Rossi S3s last winter in 168cms and loved them, although they were definitely a little short. My friends are telling me to get the 180s to help me progress as a skier. Also, not sure what bindings Im going to use. Your thoughts?

Thanks,
Bryan

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 April 29, 2011

I coveted this jacket a long time before I bought it. I considered it a staple for any true outdoorsman. When I finally decided to make the plunge and purchase one, I had a very hard time determining what size to get. I am 5’10, 150lb so I was debating between the medium and the large. My problem revolved around the length of the sleeves and length of the bottom hem. I also had a hard time deciding whether I was purchasing the jacket as a causal piece or for more technical pursuits. The medium fit perfect at the sleeves and shoulders, but the bottom hem looked goofy/too short when I asked my peers. The large, on the other hand, had sufficient length at the bottom hem, but the sleeves were way too long and bunched up considerably. In the end, I decided to go with the large as I had other layers that I could use for technical layers, but I needed a good casual fleece. The sleeves definitely look goofy all bunched up and the shoulders are a little long, but other than that the jacket fits fine. Lots of room to layer.

As for the performance of the jacket, it is very light and very warm. However, make sure to wear a wind blocking layer if it’s windy out. This jacket doesn’t block the wind at all, but it wasn’t intended too.

Excellent Thermos

Outdoor Research Water Bottle Parka

Outdoor Research Water Bottle Parka

Rating for this product: 4 December 21, 2010

I really enjoy using this product. I tend to use it primarily in the summer time to keep liquids cold while sitting in my car during long trail runs. It is really nice to know that a nalgene full of nice cold water and ice is sitting in the car while on the last mile of a run. I tend to have to share at least half a liter with friends whose water bottles water turned warm while sitting in the car for a few hours. They get really jealous about my ice cold water. This product is better than having to carry a bulky cooler or heavy thermos. I have used it in the winter during hikes and have never had my water freeze, but i honestly havent been in that cold of temperatures. Overall, great product. You wont be disappointed.

Kelty Noah's Tarp

November 28, 2010

Scout,

I have the Noah's Tarp 9 and have been very happy with it overall. I'd say that you could sleep two people underneath it in the rain comfortably, as long as you pitched it fairly low to the ground. I squeezed three under it in a trip to the selkirks, but chance of rain was very low. I havent used the EWing, but as it is an E-mergency Wing, I would guess that the Noah would be better for more long-term situations, while having more room as well. FYI I can pack the tarp in an extra small granite gear stuff sack easily so it pack way smaller than the sack that it comes with. I just use that sack for storage. Hope this helps

Montrail Mountain Masochist WB Trail Running Shoe - Women's

November 28, 2010

I run in the men's version and love them. I would say they are of a medium weight given that they have a gore tex membrane in them. They look a lot beefier than they actually feel and once broken in, they are a great pair of winer/wet weather shoes. They are not light as a feather, but do not feel clunky at all. They are very nimble and a great for rooty, technical terrain. I pair mine with the Mountain Hardwear Seta Trail Running Gaitors for the ultimate wet weather system.
Hope this helps.

GSI Outdoors Gourmet Nesting Mug and Bowl

October 27, 2010

Matthew,

From what Ive heard and experienced, the only bowl from GSI that fits into the GSI tea kettle is the one that comes with the GSI Kettlist step. The regular nesting bowls are too wide and I am pretty confident that these cups will be too tall. It sucks that you cant buy the separate nesting bowl to fit inside the kettle. the only way to get one that would fit would be to purchase the kettlist system, which is pointless since you already have the kettle. Hope that helps. In terms of gas canisters, you could fit one smaller 3.88oz canister (standard size at REI) inside easy and a MSR pocket rocket without its red case, but I dont have one so I cannot confirm 100% but eyeing it with just a canister in it, I would say that there is plenty of room.

My Go-to Insulation

The North Face Redpoint Insulated Jacket - Men's

The North Face Redpoint Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2010

I have had this jacket for almost 2 years now. I already had a Nuptse before I purchased this but it was just too puffy when a had my heavily loaded school bag on and then when I got to class and had to take it off, it looked like I brought my sleeping bag with me and stuffed in under my chair. I got the redpoint to avoid this problem, but mainly because of the synthetic primloft insulation and low bulk. I live in the PNW so everything is always wet so it is nice to have the synthetic insulation. Plus primaloft is super warm and work great as an insulating layer when Im skiing. I have liked this jacket so much that I was thinking of getting the Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket for something with down, slimer cut and lower weight, but the redpoint just performs so well that I havent caved in a got one yet. I probably will in time tho ;). The one thing that I didnt like so much is that it doesnt pack down that small. When I packed down both the Nutpse and Redpoint, they were all that different, but I guess thats what you get when comparing down to synthetic. One thing to note is that depending on how much you want to layer under it, you could potentially size down 1 size bc the cut isnt that slimming. As long as the length was okay, I would guess that you wouldnt have a problem. (I am 150, 5'10 and I have a medium, but probably could use a small most of the time. Hope this helps. cheers

Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket - Women's

August 3, 2010

I believe you are asking whether you could wear your torrent as a shell over your fitx roy. If so, it would definitely be a very tight fit. The down sweater or micro puff would definitely be a more suitable insulation layer under a shell like the torrent or rain shadow. The fitz roy is pretty puffy so any shell would be a tight fit. I havent tried on the torrent but from what i hear the rain shadow has a little more room in it for layers so that might be a better option. I have a rain shadow and would definitely say it has some room but squeezing the fitx roy under would be pretty tight. hope this helps.

Patagonia Rain Shadow Jacket - Men's

August 2, 2010

Ya its a pretty beefy rain shell. The jacket is very waterproof and has a longer tail in the back which would be good for skiing. My friends bought this jacket to use as a shell for skiing as well and he hasnt had any problems. The coat doesnt have a powder skirt or anything like that or provide any real insulation, but the puffy underneath or even a heavy duty fleece would be fine depending on the conditions. I have wanted to try mine out as a hardshell layer for skiing but didnt get a lot of snow up here in the Pacific Northwest this past season. Overall, I think you will be fine as long as you layer correctly.

Rating for this product: 5 July 27, 2010

So far I absolutely love this shirt. Although I may have gotten a size too small, Im 5'10 150 and I got a small. It fits fine at the length but is a little tight around the armpits. Not a big deal but all they had when I tried it on was a small so I just went with that. Overall this shirt performs amazingly. Its becoming my go to shirt for hot weather. Its super light and packs down really small. I also love that it dries off really fast. Probably faster than any other wicking shirt that I own! and I have a lot. I am interested to see how durable the product is because it is so thin but only time will tell. So far so good!

Optimal bladder

Osprey Packs Hydraform Hydration Reservoir

Osprey Packs Hydraform Hydration Reservoir

Rating for this product: 4 July 10, 2010

I have an old Nalgene bladder that i absolutely love bc of the large cap and magnetic bite valve. My father has had a leaky No Name bladder for a few years now, and I have been looking for a bladder like my old Nalgene one so that I could get him a quality bladder to replace it with. I have used camelback bladders before but nothing compared to my Nalgene until now. Nalgene teamed up with osprey to produce a very good bladder. I especially like the rigid back panel because it slides in and out of bags easily without bunching up. This is one feature that my old bladder has problems with, like almost all other bladders. The magnetic attachment is amazing. The only thing that my older Nalgene bladder has that the new version doesnt have is a detachable hose so you can remove the bladder when filling up while still leaving the hose and backpack in another room. This makes it easier so you dont have to rethread the hose everything you fill up. Other than that this bladder has proven to be very reliable. Just got back from a long mountain bike ride at Roger's Camp in the Tillamook State Forest and it worked great. In my opinion, these bladders are far superior to the Camelback and Platypus versions. And the cost just about the same!

Chaco Flip Eco Tread Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 27, 2010

I finally gave in and bought a pair of these flips and havent been disappointed. I have been a true Teva mush addict for the past few years but grew tired of having to replace them almost annually. I live in the PNW so they only get worn in the summers. Anyway, these flip flops are more durable and provide more support, but the Mushs will always be more comfortable. These will also work better for more rugged terrain so my feet will be more protected. My only wish is that they floated naturally. Im afraid to lose them while on the river, due to the fact that they cost me a pretty penny. Anyway if you want a durable and comfortable flip then look no further than this.

Ultimate Direction Fastdraw Plus Water Bottle - 2010

Ultimate Direction Fastdraw Plus Water Bottle - 2010

Rating for this product: 5 June 27, 2010

I absolutely love this handheld. I have used it on almost every long distance run that Ive done since I bought it last year. The kicker valve is awesome and I have had no problems with leaking. I wasnt sure if I would like running with a bottle in my hand for long distances, but after my first run with it, I was hooked. The suspension is great and it keeps the bottle very tight against my hand so I dont have to really hold it much. I found this product to be much more comfortable than the nathan hydration quickdraw, plus you get a way better bottle. The only edition to the bottle that I would like to see would be a key ring clip inside the zippered compartment. This would allow me more ease of mind so I dont have to worry about losing my key while im trying to pull my gel out. I would highly recommend this handheld over any other that I have tried.

Kelty Noah's Tarp

June 22, 2010

I have the Noah 9 and while it would fit over a picnic table, it would probably keep only 4 people packed together pretty good reasonably dry. It depends on how many people you are trying to fit under and how big your table is. I agree with Phil that bigger is going to be better given the shape of this tarp. Hope this helps.

The North Face Venture Jacket - Women's

June 10, 2010

I bought this jacket for my girlfriend, who lives in Seattle, and she absolutely loves it. She likes it because it keeps her nice and dry, but also because it has a nice feminine cut that she says she prefers over many other women's rain jackets. If your going to be staying in Seattle, then you'll be wearing this jacket a lot so its nice to look good in it as well. Get this jacket and you wont regret it.

Beacon for Sure

Ruffwear Beacon Safety Light

Ruffwear Beacon Safety Light

Rating for this product: 4 May 12, 2010

I absolutely loved this light till the metal key ring broke off and the light got lost. However, i kept the light keyringed to the collar and also clipped to my black labs collar at all times. It seemed that when ever I needed it I didnt have it so it became a temporary permanent attachment to his collar. It isnt the smallest light, but it did not seem to bother my pup at all. I really liked the light while I had it though. Used it when I let the dog out to go to the bathroom. We have a big yard with no fence and my dog disappears due to his black coat. It also works well for night time trail runs. I didnt know that it was waterproof till i read some of these reviews. I will definitely get another one due to this feature while using at the river. I might try to use some very small cordage to tie the light to the collar this time. It the end, I would definitely recommend this product to others.

I picked this piece of gear up for emergency situations and thankfully have never used it. Its light enough to always have with you and packs down small. I liked the fact that their is extra room at the top of the stuff sack for adding additional survival gear. Pick this piece of gear up. You would regret it.

injinji Performance Micro Toe Sock

April 28, 2010

I was able to scrunch them down and have them work well. I had problems sizing down bc my middle toes are larger than my big toe so it would look like i had webbed toes with the smaller size. An employee at REI let me take them out of the package and try them on before deciding what size to get so that is always an option. if not, just order another pair, keep the one that fits best and send the other pair back to backcountry bc of their great return policy. Great sock tho. Good luck!

Great Little Kit

Adventure Medical Ultralight & Watertight .5 First Aid Kit

Adventure Medical Ultralight & Watertight .5 First Aid Kit

Rating for this product: 5 April 28, 2010

This is an awesome kit for the price. There is a little room left in the waterproof bag for adding additional supplies. The yellow lightweight bag has lots of extra room. I have added a lot of other gear, primarily survival type stuff. Here is a list of the other things i could fit in the yellow bag: flint stick, GU gel, powdered gatorade packet, plastic glove, chapstick, Bic lighter, safety pins, water purifying tablets, as well as, additional pain pills and stomach meds of various sorts. I keep my petzl e-lite on some cordage just in case. I take this with me on most excursions because it is so light, even with all the additions. Get one and always keep it close.

Nalgene Narrow Mouth Tritan Bottle - 16oz

April 28, 2010

I have a wide variety of Nalgene bottle. the standard tritan wide mouth 32oz is 3.5 inches, this tritan narrow mouth 160z is 3 inches and my tritan wide mouth 16oz is 2.5 inches. So judging on your requirements, I would go with the tritan wide mouth 16oz, which is also has a more narrow body than this bottle.

Patagonia Capilene 2 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

April 27, 2010

I agree with Cory here. It depends on what activity you are participating in. Capilene 2 doesnt feel like silk at all while the capilene 1 is much more similar. Cold weather pursuit would be better with Capilene 2, but silk or Capilene 1 may be better for humid or hotter temperature with high activity. Silk always feels good though!

Columbia Silver Ridge II Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 22, 2010

I used this shirt for a 2 month backpacking trip through Europe and it held up great the whole time. It came in especially useful in Italy because it was so humid. The shirt packs down very small, but comes out pretty wrinkly. The UPF 30 protection was also very nice. The mesh panelling on the inside back of the shirt helped to keep the sweat from pouring down my back. This is a great shirt. I will definitely be purchasing another one in blue for this summer. Cant wait to use it on the river as well!

Patagonia Alpine Wind Jacket - Women's

April 21, 2010

Gemma,
I have the Alpine Wind Jacket and I absolutely love it. The Guide jacket will be a lot heavier than the Alpine. However, the guide jacket will be more durable given its softshell fabric. I use my alpine jacket for everyday use in mild weather, but also use it for trail running, cycling, hiking and climbing. The Alpine jacket can stuff into its own pocket which is a nice feature that the guide doesnt have. Given your intended uses I would go with the Alpine wind jacket. Plus its cheaper!

injinji Performance Mini-Crew Toe Sock

injinji Performance Mini-Crew Toe Sock

Rating for this product: 4 April 21, 2010

I have been very impressed with these socks. I recently wore them on my first 50k, Spokane River Run, and they worked brilliantly. The socks seemed to breathe very well. Some people have been worried that the extra material around the toes will cause a tight fit inside your shoes around the toe area. I prefer my shoes on the tighter side, especially around the toes and I have had no problems what so ever with the extra material causing extra tightness in my shoes. This sock would get 5 stars if only the upper material around the ankle was tighter. It feels like the sock is going to sag down over time. I have really skinny ankles so this may only be a problem for me, but I thought id let other skinny ankled people know. Also, if anyone is concerned about the fit of the sock in terms of having longer middles toes, like me, dont worry, the material stretches out nicely, although it does take some getting used to having material between your toes.

Montrail Rockridge Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Montrail Rockridge Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 11, 2010

I have been trail running in these shoes for about a week now and have been pleasantly surprised. Most montrail shoes have very high arches, which doesnt work for my flat feet. I did try a pair of 09 Hardrocks, which had a flatter arch that worked well with my foot however the cushioning in them wore down quick and began to hurt my feet. When I tried the Rockridges on, they had a flatter foot, more cushion and better tread than the Hardrocks that I have. So far I have been very pleased with them. No problems with the arches. The tread pattern and grip is excellent! My only complaint is that the toe box is very roomy given the overall tightness of the rest of the shoe. My Hardrocks were the same way so I guess that this is just how montrail makes their shoes. Probably to give room for your toes if they swell on longer runs. I would defintely recommend this shoe as of right now. Time will tell how durable the shoe is and how long the cushioning and tread last.

Mountain Hardwear Butter Glove Liner

Mountain Hardwear Butter Glove Liner

Rating for this product: 3 April 11, 2010

I purchased these gloves last week and have been generally satisfied. I used them as liners for my half-finger road biking gloves in the rain and wind 2 weeks ago in Salem, OR for a race and they worked perfectly well. Unfortunately, then began to fray when I was trying to take off my velcro cycling shoes as the gloves stuck to the velcro. After a quick run through the wash and drier they were back to norma but I will have to be very careful in the future not to get them stuck on things. I have also used the gloves for running in colder weather and have been very happy. They kept my hands very warm but not sweaty on a recent trail run in cold, windy weather. As long as I'm careful, I feel like these gloves will last a while.

Patagonia Capilene 1 T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

March 31, 2010

From what ive experienced, the benefits of gladiodor really shine after the sweaty shirts sit around for a bit without being washed. For example, after running or working out hard in the capilene1 and in a Nike Dri-fit. If you leave both shirts laying around for a day or two without being washed, the patagonia tshirt's stench is effectively controlled to the point where i could put it back on and wear it again. Not so for the dri-fit tshirt. So this type of shirt is good for sweaty endeavors where a washing machine is out of reach for extended periods. Example being multi-day backpacking trip, backpacking europe, or dirtbag climbers.

I have had this bag for 3 years now and it has been on countless trips without any problems. It gets a little scuffed but it looks way more legit this way. Leatherman Skeletool Multi-Tool

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2010

My father gave one of these to me as one of my graduation gifts from college, and I absolutely love it. The tool is clipped to my pocket everyday. I used to keep a single blade, but the lightweight Skeletool has taken its place for good. I primarily use the bottle opener function, but the blade has remained very sharp over the year that Ive had it and I still have both screw bits that it originally came with. I didnt know about the additional bits package so Ill have to look into that. If you want a lightweight tool with the essentials, then pick this tool up.

Patagonia Capilene 2 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 21, 2010

I use this piece of gear primarily for layering when skiing or with other cold weather pursuits. I havent used this top for trail running because I feel that I would get too hot. I prefer a lightweight jacket given my rainy and misty climate in the PacNW. One thing to mention is that the sleeves taper at the end so it can be very difficult to scrunch the sleeves up to your elbow if you get too hot. Not a big deal for me most of the time but every once and awhile it bugs me when Im hot. I love the material and own many other capilene tops. I have no doubt that this top will be with me 10 years down the road.

GSI Outdoors Fairshare Mug

Rating for this product: 4 March 19, 2010

I have had this cup for a few months now and have had no problems with it what so ever. I tend to use it mainly for car camping and around the house as a bowl because it is so big. I also really liked the fact that it has a secure lid so I can just throw it in my bag and eat Ramen noodles in class if im running behind schedule. My only complaint is that this mug says DO NOT MICROWAVE on the bottom. This would be the ultimate bowl/mug if it passed the microwave test.

I would like to hear if anyone has used this mug in the microwave and had any problems. I would be shocked if the thing melted or something but better safe than sorry.

GSI Outdoors Halulite Tea Kettle - 1qt

GSI Outdoors Halulite Tea Kettle - 1qt

Rating for this product: 5 March 16, 2010

I bought this stove for lightweight backpacking. i wanted a lighter option for boiling water instead of using my Jetboil. I have paired this kettle with a homemade "fancy feast" stove (just google it). The time to boil is quite a bit longer but the weight that i save is worth it. I would suggest making a homemade wind shield out of aluminum foil to decrease the time till boil. I have fit my FF stove windshield in the kettle but the fuel must be kept separate. I like how cheap this product was compared to buying a titanium put or kettle. Cant beat this price! Get one you wont regret it.

Kelty Noah's Tarp

Kelty Noah's Tarp

Rating for this product: 4 March 15, 2010

I have had this tarp for a year now. I have the Noah 9. I got it for lightweight backpacking and as a separate shelter for cooking and hanging out during rainy and snowy weather. The tarp comes with a sack to store the tarp in, but i purchased a smaller granite gear ditty bag and stuff it into a XS bag so it comes out slightly smaller than a Nalgene. Way more easier to pack than the longer stock bag that it comes with. I use the longer stock bag as a storage sack because its a lot looser.

I havent used this product in the rain yet. But it perform very well in the sun providing lots of shade. From what others have said it should work very well in the rain. Look forward to trying it out in wet condition.

Patagonia Rain Shadow Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 March 4, 2010

I have had this jacket for a year now and cannot really complain about much other than the front zipper is a complete pain in the ass to zip because the zipper constantly gets caught on the inner fabric. It takes me multiple zips to get it all the way up. Patagonia changed the design on the newer Rain Shadow with overlapping flaps with a traditional zipper instead of the waterproof zipper on the older one that I have. My friend has the newer one and it seems to zip just fine. Also, the waterproofness seemed to diminish rather quickly but its nothing that Nikwax cant fix. Overall decent product cause I got it on sale.

Montrail Hardrock '09 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Montrail Hardrock '09 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 March 2, 2010

I bought these shoes for a 2 month backpacking trip through Europe with the hopes of using them as trail running shoes when I got back. Unfortunately, the tread was pretty worn down and the cushion seemed to have depleted quite a bit. I still use them for casual trail running, like sections of the Wildwood Trail in Portland (note Montrail's Wildwood TR shoe. half trail runner/half road runner), but tend to prefer my LaSportiva Lynx for the rockier, technical trails.

On another note, I wanted to get the Masochists but the insole had too high of an arch for my flatter feet. The same thing happened with the Streaks, but for whatever reason the Hardrocks fit really well. I tried the shoes with Montrail's fancy insoles but it made the problem even worse. Nothing wrong with the insole (I use them in my hiking boots) just didnt help with my high arches.

Part of the capacity is going to be derived from the two external side-zip pockets. I favored the Atmos 65 over the Gregory because I liked how I could organize the 65 liters between the two zip pockets, lid and main compartment, where as the Gregory had one large compartment and the lid. Petzl e+LITE Emergency Headlamp

Rating for this product: 4 March 2, 2010

I originally bought this headlamp for emergency purposes but have been slowly transitioning towards using it as my primary headlamp due to its high light output given its low weight.

I typically take the lamp out of its case and slip it into my ultimate direction quickdraw hand canteen pocket when I am running around dusk. I have also used this light caving in Bend, OR when I somehow forgot my Tikka. It worked a lot better than expected. Not up to the full light output as the Tikka, but pretty close. I would highly recommend this product to the outdoor adventurer.

Patagonia Alpine Wind Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Alpine Wind Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 2, 2010

This is an amazing jacket that seems to be able to handle almost anything. I have a size medium in blue and I am 5'10'' 150lb. The sleeves are baggy enough for more bulkier layer but the torso length can be a little short if you have a longer torso.

I have used this jacket primarily to trail run and mountain biking, and I like the fact that it can stuff into its napoleon pocket so you can just throw it in your bag and forget about it till you need it. I would highly recommend this product given its price, plus you get a high quality piece of patagonia equipment.
