  • Stomping Grounds:

Alta/Snowbird, Taos, Summit County, Big Bend
  • Bio:

I am so white collar urban cowboy it's not even funny. I have to work for a living but I work to live. I love travel and getting out of doors. I am a novice at surfing, but I have canoed, kayaked, hiked, biked, and ski all over the world.

I love to take a quick trip but prefer the extended stays in the high country acclimatizing, fly fishing, and making short order of Fourteeners.

Merrell Trail Glove Shoe - Men's

Merrell Trail Glove Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 1 day ago

For all the talk on size I wear a 9 and bought a 9 and it fit just fine. The design does give extra toe room so without a sock it does feel roomy across the tops of the toes but that's by design. I got used to it pretty quick even though I prefer a heavier and tighter feel for actual trail running.

I bought and use mine to ride my non-clip-on hybrid bike and it was just what I was looking for. Thin, lightweight, breathy (for desert heat coolness of my feet), easy to get on and off, sockless, and kinda fashionable. Considering the lack of material and structure these are overpriced...but whatever.

Merrell Trail Glove Shoe - Men's

May 7, 2012

Lots of comments about size - I intend to wear sport sox - I have been a solid size 9 for years - should I tack down a half notch? If everyone is doing that, why don't they just make the shoes the right size? I'm like, "What, you didn't notice this when you were designing the shoe and passed a few out as samples?" There's really not much excuse for this kind of inconsistency in industry standards...and it makes buying online precarious. I know not any two feet are alike, and not to be persnickety, but,...if you say Size X then mean it.

Osprey Packs Raptor 10 Hydration Pack - 600cu in

March 8, 2012

I have the generously sized Kode-22 for off-piste but I need something a little more compact...the Raptor 10 with 3 litres seems even a bit much, but the 6 with only 360 cubic inches, is that a bit small? 2 litres of water is ample...I'm having a hard time visualizing 360 cubic inches.

I would really only have the need to pack an extra jacket, cap, snack...no tools or equipment (that's what the K-22 is for!). I have alternatives for overnights...so this is strictly multi-season day use.

The more I wear it...

Mammut Stratus Hybrid Jacket - Men's

Mammut Stratus Hybrid Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 13, 2011

OK - I'm no fan of permanent hoodies...but so far this winter has been wetter and cooler than normal and the longer the wet cool weather continues the more I wear it. The sleeves are of good length BUT they do grab on the fore-arm and hence pull your base layer up to your elbows if you don't hold it tight. The hood is big enough for a helmet and the inside pockets are large enough for a UPS parcel !-D

Material and workmanship is what you would expect from Mammut. I was surprised because when I got it and first tried it on this past summer I was not overly excited with it but thought to keep it anyway "just because." I'm looking forward to wearing this late season skiing at the Snowbird in April...! Side vents keep it cool enough in those tepid winter days.

I am 5'9" 185# and Large fit me very well....sleeves have enough to reach middle of hand when extended out, if you have long arms you might have an issue there.

Patagucci makes tents now?

Patagonia Synchilla Snap-T Fleece Pullover - Men's

Patagonia Synchilla Snap-T Fleece Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 October 12, 2011

This thing is huge....I'm 5'9" 185 and a large fit me like a tent.. Almost a foot of material across my beer gut, and the shoulders dropped across to my biceps. Otherwise typical Patagucci quality. I was looking forward to washing it and getting it to soften up in the dryer will have to try for a smaller size now.

Patagonia Synchilla Snap-T Fleece Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 5, 2011

I've had one of these since 1986 in turquoise and it STILL rocks! The 300 weight only gets better looking with wash and wear. My original has been high and low, in surf, sand, and snow, it is awesome. I had to get another...the fleece is way soft but I agree the cut has changed and the fit a bit roomy.

Tight Fit

Neve Designs Bourke Sweater - Men's

Neve Designs Bourke Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 June 29, 2011

5'8" 185# and the large was tighter than a wet suit...comfy material, it's a thick layer (justifies the cost) but cut super slim. Even if I had shed some weight this size was simply too small and wool after a couple washes shrinks no matter how you try to stop it. The sleeves seemed to lack any room or give, and after a wash? I sent it back...

Space Suit

MontBell Ultralight Down Inner Jacket - Men's

MontBell Ultralight Down Inner Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 16, 2011

While I was heckled about it's space-suit kind of look, I was super comfy wearing this almost T-Shirt weight down jack-shirt-sweater around the lodge and up on the slopes. This is by no means summit gear, and the shell material thickness is not tough enough to wear as outer shell off-piste. I did find a couple feathers working their way out of a seam but other than that even on bare skin it was super soft and lightweight. Wear this around the camp/lodge or even at home on those cold nights, as a mid level layer, but not as an outer shell if you're gonna be out thrashing.

I/O Bio Merino Signature Hoodigan Pullover Sweatshirt - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 16, 2011

I wore this a few times skiing Snowbird. Soft and warm, the hood a little generous in size, and the neck would be much better served with a zip or a slight V...otherwise well made and comfortable to wear.

Osprey Packs Kode 22 Backpack - 1200-1400cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 16, 2011

late season snow skiing Alta / Snowbird with a 1.5ltr water pack...talk about roomy, this has more then enough to pack your daily layer kit and rations. Very comfortable against the back with the padded strap and backliner. This is really suited for off-piste when you really need to take some garb and kit with you. If you are just looking for a day runner with a pater kit there are mant choices of smaller and lighter packs out there...

I was stoked on the color of the black - it;'s more like a flat matt deep deep olive green kind of black. Sharp looking pack and made to take you to the chutes.

Mountain Hardwear Microchill Fleece Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Microchill Fleece Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 1 January 29, 2011

I am returning this item. While the material is comfortable and the workmanship worthy of the name, the super deep crotch ruins it for me. As a previous reviewer stated, it's @ 18 inches deep (I used a measuring tape) and I would pull them up to my breast plate.....if I wear it where it normally fits it hangs down almost to my knees and then I have 6 inches of ankle material.....saddens me because I am so in the market for replacement fleece relax fit pants.

Fleece Jacket

Mammut Outline Fleece Jacket - Men's

Mammut Outline Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 December 23, 2010

So now that I've had this a garment a couple months I can start to detect the qualities...it's is comfortable to be sure, and it is stylish, but the zipper comes undone from time-to-time, and now I am noting some balling of the material from mini-snags or simple wear and tear where the synthetic material is pulling from the main fabric.

I've worn this around the house and in my car driving around town but not on a trail and while only small balling of material I thought it a bit weak to see this so soon in the ownership. I believe it's been in the washer/dryer once or twice...

I have a few other Mammut garments and they are top quality so I was curious to find these two flaws.

Mammut Jasper Zip Pullover Jacket - Men's

Mammut Jasper Zip Pullover Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 14, 2010

I have a few Mammut pieces and they can be pricy but this piece is worth the extra. Very well made, I have been wearing during workouts and it's comfortable, breathable, and good looking. The combined materials and heavy stich make this a stout pullover for most outdoor activities in cool weather. Add a poly layer underneath and you're good to go in the cold. Fits well with some tightness on the guns and a trim fit. 5' 9" 185 with a little pudge and Large fit nicely....

Note: On Black - the red stripes are much less subtle than in the picture...the picture appears doctored - what you get is a double stitch in red thread not a solid red strip of material, and at the bottom even less pronounced.

Salomon Brigade Audio Custom Air Cody Townsend Helmet

Salomon Brigade Audio Custom Air Cody Townsend Helmet

Rating for this product: 4 October 21, 2010

Wore this Alta/Snowbird late season with a pair of Smith goggles and my iPod plugged in to some Tom Petty. Carved some freshies after a 2 foot dump. Took a few lumps in the white out but this helmet fit nice and snug and the audio was quite good.

I got a medium since that's what I wear on all other SML sized hats...fit nice and snug...the air pump and valve worked as advertised, very nice feel.

Caveat: The dang "Custom Air" sticker was stuck TIGHT could not peel or scrape it off and no petro products can be used without scarring the helmet finish. Peet peeve of mine is excessive glue factor on stickers...tell your suppliers to lower the stick!-D

Arc'teryx Rampart Pant - Men's

October 3, 2010

No...they are not quiet...walking around in them you have the constant swish-swoosh sound of a synthetic material rubbing. It's not overbearing but it is there....in the same way a ski pant has perhaps lighter in volume. I find the pant comfortable but for the price somewhat disappointed as I bought two pair. They should have stuck with their technical pant material they had @ 4 years ago that was a synthetic blend that had almost a poplin/canvas feel to it. I grew out of them and cannot find a replacement...

Brisk is Tight!

Mammut Brisk Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mammut Brisk Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 29, 2010

This material is awesome. Quality throughout, and the arm pit zipper vents are what takes this over the top. This is a versatile garment that can be used over a thin bottom layer or over a vest on a late season powder run. In warmer climes the wind stopper material might actually be too warm, but that's where the arm pit zipper vents come in. Thumb holes on the sleeves keep it real. This is definitely a good high country cool front breezy day garment. The red is just that, red. Thought it might have had more orange or a some fade in it but it's pretty red. Had I been shopping off the rack I might have taken the blue or black instead.

Nitrous Outside

Mountain Hardwear Nitrous Down Vest - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Nitrous Down Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 29, 2010

This vest is cut trim and fits tight. A large on 5'9" 185# would have room for a tight undergarment and that's it. It is WARM, very toasty with the 800 fill, tight arm pits to keep the wind out, but the Sapphire was more of a dull dark blue and not as light as the pic on the monitor made it out to be. Looking forward to wearing this off-piste. Will come back in a few months and let you know how it went.

Arc'teryx Raider Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 19, 2010

Coffee Bean is really kind of a dark forest green in this material and it shows as soon as you pull them out of the package, and the material is a bit on the thick felty feel to them...Otherwise the fit is comfortable and nice looking cut/trim/shape. These will make a great "Travel Day" pant for airports, taxis and busses when not off piste or running Honey Do errands.

Do these make much noise when walking? I am curious to know...I have an old pair from 2005 of other material (47% cotton+poly+nylon) and they were so awesome but these look like a good all around travel pant....but I aint into 100% synthetics simply due to the plasticy feel. Any input out there on comfort and feel/noise??

Salomon XT Wings Softshell Jacket - Men's

Salomon XT Wings Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 August 10, 2010

'm 5'8" @ 188# and this zip shell/jacket is unusual for me - It's snug...not even room for a capline underneath and there's a tightness on the triceps. The Material is awesome, seems very well made, sleeves and overall length are good. This would appear to make a great urban cycling or even a running accomplice for cooler climes and higher altitudes...but I'm in Texas where it's 98 degrees until October as much as I like the jacket overall I'm not sure what I can use it for where I live to justify the premium...maybe I come back in 6 months and provide a curious update.

This is a lite and comfortable fit for me. I am 5'8" 185 and this fit tad snug but comfortable in Large size. After wearing a bit it loosens up and has a nice drape on the body. I have worn as under garment, tucked into pants as a casual pullover for dinner, and around the house telecommuting...I have tons of fleece and this is a nice new addition to my collection.
