The New Best Transceiver on the Planet

Backcountry Access Tracker 2 Avalanche Beacon

Backcountry Access Tracker 2 Avalanche Beacon

Rating for this product: 5 January 21, 2010

When BCA first changed the world for beacons it took a long time for the hard bitten Bob Merrill-like Skadi's riders to let go and and embrace the cult of the crossed antenna.
The orginal Tracker rocked, right out of the box.
And I nervously awaited the sequel, concerned that the Bruce's would somehow botch the job and not make as beautiful a transceiver as could be. I was wrong. The Tracker II is excellent in every way.
It is filled with logic and simplicity. My hat is off to the folks at Backcountry Access for making what I think to be the best beacon on the market.
The simplicity of the search function alone make the II a worthy upgrade. But every aspect of the Tracker has been revamped in a brilliant to make a truly great transceiver. Congratulations.

Marmot Trestles 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Spirafil - Women's

April 30, 2008

At 5'6", you're on the edge for height range on this bag, so it'll come down to whether you want to be more comfortable or more thermally efficient. That said, I bought my girlfriend a women's bag, and she likes it a lot more than using one of mine, mostly for the feet warming and general cut of the bag.I kinda dig that the first answer comes from a guy named Big Brian. Nice work brother.

Backcountry.com Wool Hooded Jacket - Men's

March 6, 2008

Does snow stick to sheep? Of course. Merino may keep you warm but snow sticks to this jacket. But like a sheep you'll stay warm long after the snow stacks up on you. Plus this jacket is not really for charging in the mountains more of an everyday jacket which keeps the dingelberries to a minimum. A lot of merino products are a very smooth weave that are not dingle friendly. You can wear this as an outer layer reasonably well during a storm. However, if you are prone to crashing you will end holding quite a lot of snow. The sleeves are longer than John Holmes todger and may not fit the average non-simian man.

The T2 held my bikes apart up to about 130 mph, at which grocery-getter wagon wouldn't go any faster. Best bike rack on the planet, bar none.

I haven't bought a fleece in five years

Backcountry.com Cairn Fleece Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Cairn Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 15, 2007

But I thought I ought to fly the flag. Also, I was checking it out and it was kind of a new fleece. Smoother external weave, but super soft inside. I've been very happy with it and wear it a lot more than I thought I would. But if you want to stop the wind, go with a softshell.

Oakley THUMP MP3 Sunglasses 256MB

Rating for this product: 5 July 18, 2006

The Oakley Thump's rule for biking and specifically road biking. It's the only MP3 player that I have seen that allows you to tilt the speakers away from your ears so you can hear both music and road noise. It's key so that you can listen to music and not die.

Life-Link Backcountry Series Carbon Speed Light Probe 246 cm

Life-Link Backcountry Series Carbon Speed Light Probe 246 cm

Rating for this product: 5 February 13, 2006

I'm very happy with the product. However, I haven't really had to probe for bodies with it yet. I spent a bunch of time practicing with it. It's not as obvious as it might seem. You really need to practice extending it over and over. Once you get the hang of it you can extend it with the flick of your hand. Cool, cool product.

Gerber Fast Draw Knife - Serrated Edge

Gerber Fast Draw Knife - Serrated Edge

Rating for this product: 5 September 2, 2005

I bought this because I wanted to see how the FAST system worked. It's insane. It's basically a switch blade. Push on the nubbins and the blade rockets out. I used it on a river trip on the Toulomne and was just glad that I didn't accidentaly stick the raft. Great knife, wicked blade.

Vermont with the Optimus

The North Face Prism Optimus Jacket - Men's

The North Face Prism Optimus Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 30, 2004

I went back to Vermont for Christmas and it was as cold as a republican in a homeless shelter.

I bought the Optimus as an early present for myself because I knew I no longer had the tough skin I had as a kid growing up on the mean streets of new england. And man was that a good purchase. The wind was blowing and the thermometer was claiming -20. But I was wrapped up and warm as could be.

I walked all around Craftsbury Common which is often listed as the cold spot of the nation. The wind blew, ice crystals pelted me and I just laughed. If you need a truly bomber jacket for the coldest of days, I recommend it.

The Optimus also packed down very small for travel.

Good Boating Tool

Brunton Atlas GPS

Brunton Atlas GPS

Rating for this product: 5 September 30, 2004

So I took this thing, with the east coast data chip, to Maine where I went boating for a couple of days. We bought a nautical chart from the marina and found the Atlas' data was much more accurate. All buoy information was in there, island names, etc. etc. Very easy to navigate with. Of course it didn't have depth info, but that's reasonable. Over all it's an excellent unit with great detail.

Good Concert Chair

Rating for this product: 5 July 28, 2003

So I toted this chair into a "They Might Be Giants" concert. It strapped nicely to my back, was very light, but left me dragging my backpack along with all the sundry outdoor concert items. Setup was easy, and the chair was very comfortable. Nice cushion for your head, if you are a sloucher like me. The beach version might be better for concerts as it sits lower and might have gotten me fewer scowls from the people sitting on beach blankets behind me. An excellent lightweight chair, I recommend it.

Eagle Creek Load Warrior 30 Sport Duffel

Rating for this product: 4 December 30, 2002

I just used this for a weeklong trip to Vermont. Excellent overall. The wide set wheels make it very stable and easier to roll than other bags. It stands on end without any trouble, which is handy in airports. (It was far easier to manage than my wife’s Da Kine Split Roller.)
