As you can tell from the wrinkles in the tent-it was really windy. This trip was one of the worst thunder storms ive been in a long time (hair standing up on your arms etc) Tent handled everything (weather wise) perfectly.

Arc'teryx Acto MX Fleece Hooded Jacket - Men's
November 27, 2011
Brandon,
I have tried on this jacket and love it. The question I have for you is, i own a gamma MX and a Gamma Lt. I want this to be a good backcountry ski jacket (uphill) and also for trail running in temps in the teens to mid 30s. Will this breathe similar/better or worse than Gamma Lt? I want some thing with a bit more warmth and next to skin comfort than the gamma Lt-thats why im looking at the Acto. What do you think? Thanks.

Marmot Zion Jacket - Men's
October 26, 2011
There you go-as you can see the seams are taped. The arc'teryx jacket is the Gamma mx-the two jackets have nearly the same fleece lining.

This jacket will fit over a climbing helmet ok-not a ski helmet. I tried both today. Fit is not as good as arc'teryx-its stiff like you mentioned.

Marmot Zion Jacket - Men's
October 21, 2011
I just got the zion jacket in the mail today. It has a soft fleece lining which is great for cold temps. The powershield pro jacket I was thinking about buying was the Kishtwar by north face-the Kishtwar feels very much like a shell-actually kind of scratchy on the inside IMO. This feels alot better with the fleece-but that extra warmth delegates the jacket to cold weather use. I decided against the kishtwar because it felt so much like a hardshell, and I have a gamma mx and gamma lt- So i asked myself: why get a more breathable shell that feels like a hardshell?
neoshell has a waterproof rating of 10,000 while powershield pro is rated at 3,000.

Arc'teryx Venta MX Softshell Hoody - Men's
August 13, 2011
So, I was about to buy a new venta SV due to the fact that I have trashed my current Venta SV. What is the difference between this and the SV version. The SV, from my experience is pretty bombproof for utah conditions (ice climbing, snowboarding, touring etc). Is this somehow more water resistant/breathable and if the mx is better-how much more so? Thanks in advance.

MontBell Super Spiral Hugger #3 Down Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree
June 27, 2011
Montbells exceloft will last a long time in comparison to many other synthetics. However exceloft will not compress as small as primaloft and in my opinion doesnt feel as "fine" as primaloft.
THe difference between the 800 and 650 fill is totally up to you.
For family camping I prefer the 650 fill bags due to the thicker denier material which will stand up to more abuse from kids etc. However, for backpacking/mountaineering I prefer the 800 fill due the weight savings. Regarding whether to get synthetic or down-thats a personal call. If you are sleeping in cheap tents, I would go with synthetic. BUt synthetic bags will have a fraction of the life span that down bags do. In addition, you would have to get pretty wet for the down to lose alot of its insulation.

Smith Variant Brim Helmet
November 20, 2010
Im looking at getting the chocolate colored helmet-but Im worried about the synthetic looking leather on the side for two reasons-water absorption and premature wear. Does any one have this helmet to comment on that. Thanks

Outdoor Research Credo Softshell Pant - Men's
November 11, 2010
yep, I just tried these on today over my scarpa f1 boots and they fit with no prob. I wear a size 27.f boot and tried on a medium and a large sized pant. For what it is worth, they will also fit over snowboarding boots. These pants actually were a little wider, had a slightly larger leg cuff than the arc'teryx gamma sk which surprised me.

Outdoor Research Exos Softshell Pant - Men's
November 8, 2010
I actually just got the exos pants in the mail today(11.8.2010). I could get the zipper over my scarpa f1 boots but they are really tight. And if you want to be able to undo some of the top buckles on your boots when touring uphill-forget it unless dont mind the pant resting way on top of the boot (rolled up).

Arc'teryx Stingray Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Stinger Jacket - Men's
November 7, 2010
I would definitely go large if the Gamma MX fits you well in a large. The Stinger is more relaxed for easy movement and layering. You should be able to fit the Gamma under the Stinger as a mid layer as well-if you want. im 5'9" and 155 and the medium fits a bit loose, but not baggy.

MontBell Alpine Light Down Parka - Men's
November 5, 2010
In, my montbell down jacket, I wouldnt want to be in a light rain for long at all. Yeah, the jacket has a DWR but the jacket is made of 30 Denier material, hence the material is thin so the rain will quickly penetrate. If I anticipate rain, not snow, I bring a synthetic jacket.

Black Diamond Sabretooth Clip Crampons
November 5, 2010
Depends on what you want to use these for. If you want a technical ice climbing crampon, I would go with the Grivel G14. If you want a do it all, multipurpose crampon, these are great as well as the petzl sarkens and Grivel G14. The Grivel G14 will be to technical for general mountaineering.
Ive used these for for technical mountaineering and steep ice. I prefer these for technical mountaineering, and Grivel rambos or Grivel G14s for technical ice. If you want these for general mountaineering, theyre overkill and I think youll want less points which will mean less to trip on/catch on.

Arc'teryx Venta SV Softshell Jacket - Men's
October 30, 2010
I wouldnt worry about the wind at all with this. I use this jacket dirt biking going 60 mph and the hood rarely bothers me. This is my primary snowboard jacket for backcountry and have never been bothered. Ultimately, no I wouldnt worry about it at all. i even use it on my road bike on the freeway with no complaints.

You would be sweating pretty bad in those temps. I sweat in these above 65 degrees if I am active at all. In other words, above 65 degrees, in my opinion these would be way to hot.

Stoic Somnus 30 Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down
October 24, 2010
Quantum is a really tight weave that will be water resistant in light/short periods of mist and rain. Quantum does not have a membrane so it will not block the rain. Think of quantum as the same material as a very lightweight windshell: ie marmot trail wind or montbell ultralight wind jacket. Dont expect to sit in the rain, but if you spill a drink on the bag, you should be okay if you wipe it up immediately.
