Christopher Hood's 2012 AT Thru-Hike Gear
Created July 26, 2011
The gear I'll be using along my 5 million steps from Springer Mountain to Mt. Katahdin. I've read countless books and watched several dvd's on hiking the AT and I'm up to the challenge. I know that it is going to be hard and miserable. I know that I'll be cold and wet most of the time. I have no illusions about such things, but I do have my sights set on Mt. Katahdin. It isn't so much that it is my goal and my final destination, but rather the culmination of the sacrifices I will have along the way and the fortitude to see it through. It's a long road and hard, but then if it were easy, everyone would be out there doing it and there would be nothing special about the journey.

Christopher Hood's April 2011 AT trip
Created December 12, 2010
AT from Davenport Gap to Fontana Lake.
This is an approximately 72 mile section of Appalachian Trail through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The AT for the most part of the park follows the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. If weather permits and depending on the seasons, the hiker in the smokies will be treated along the way to many expansive views of Tennessee and North Carolina.
Highlights of the trail include Clingman's Dome, the highest point of the entire 2,175 mile AT at 6,643ft, vistas of Mt. LeConte, the second highest peak in the smokies, Charlie's Bunion, Shuckstack Tower (an old fire tower), Thunderhead Mountain and Rocky Top and Mt. Cammerer (1.2 mile round trip side trail) for vista lovers as well as those interested in geology. The mountain, named for the first director of the GSMNP has a stone lookout tower with 360 degree views.
If time permits, take the side trail, The Boulevard, which intersects with the AT about a third of a mile south of Icewater Spring shelter, to Mt. LeConte (~10.5 miles round trip). At the summit there is a shelter and nearby, LeConte Lodge. Make reservations well in advance for an overnight stay at the top of the smokies you'll never forget.-

Osprey Packs Hydraform Hydration Reservoir
October 12, 2011
Anybody have problems with this leaking? Bought an Osprey Raptor 10 for trail running and came with the Hydraform Reservoir. Worked great for a long time. Very durable, easy to clean, water tasted great! But then about a month ago it just started leaking at the bottom of the reservoir (or at least that is where, due to gravity, the fluid is collecting and dripping from). I examined the whole thing, and there appears to be no source. Visually all the seams are intact. Nothing is frayed or splitting. Gonna order another and see if that has the same problem.

Sea To Summit Reactor Thermolite Sleeping Bag Liner
August 15, 2011
You definitely could. I hiked the AT stretch through the Smokies in late April this past year. I brought this liner and my Kelty Lightyear 40 degree bag. The first few nights we had below freezing temps and with both I was toast! As the week progressed the weather warmed and by the last two nights my Kelty was just a little warm, so I slept in the liner on top of my bag. I was wearing a pair of shorts and shirt as well though, but totally think it would work in summer time in the smokies, even at higher elevations. Of course, I do agree that it is a matter of hiker variability and preference.

Marmot Eos Tent: 1-Person 3-Season
March 12, 2011
Thinking of getting this tent for my dad. He is is 6'2", 200 lbs. Do you think the interior height will be sufficient for his height and not feel cramped sitting up inside? Was also looking at MSR Hubba.

Osprey Packs Talon 22 Backpack - 1200-1300cu in
September 6, 2010
Pretty sure it would work. Have never tried carrying books in it personally, but do agree with Mike that school books will fit. Has a lot more space than it looks, and quite a lot of hidden pockets. As a day pack for hiking it's great and the hydration compartment is a nice feature. Very comfortable and breathable back panel keeps your back cool. I'm 5'10" and got the M/L and fits perfect. Hope this helps.

Osprey Packs Kestrel 68 Backpack - 4000-4200cu in
August 29, 2010
Interested in either this pack or the Osprey Aether 70. Currently have an Argon 85 but looking for something a little lighter for week long backpacking trips. Anyone have a preference toward one pack or the other? Both seem pretty comparable. Price is not an option; comfort and functionality are paramount.

Osprey Packs Argon 85 Backpack - 5100-5500cu in
August 1, 2010
I own this pack and have used it on several trips. Very roomy! Top access under removable lid with draw string closure. Bottom Sleeping bag compartment accessible at, of all places, the bottom. This pack also has a front access zipper that allows entry into the main compartment from the front. Located just behind the outside zipper pocket and stretch pocket. Very nicely designed pack! Hope this helped.

The North Face Blue Kazoo Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down
April 27, 2010
This is a fantastic bag and very warm and light weight. I agree with you Phil (and your kids!). Worst thing about it is getting out on a cold morning, other than that, the Blue Kazoo is sweet and worth every washington.

MSR HyperFlow Microfilter
April 6, 2010
How many nanometers does this filter down to? I have a LifeSaver 4000 water filter that filters down to 15 nanometers, but is not designed for backpacking and weighs about 30oz. It is a great filter and packs easily, but for weight purposes, it's a little heavy. However, I can't seem to find a filter that filters down to anything less than 0.2 micrometers or 200 nanometers.

MSR SimmerLite Stove
February 18, 2010
This stove does come with the wind screen and heat reflector. Also a small tool kit which contains a small multi-wrench tool, a tube of oil for the pump and a replacement o-ring, as well as the canister pump to pressurize the fuel in the fuel canister and a small carrying bag. Fuel canister is a separate item.
