Marmot Minimalist Jacket - Women's

May 1, 2010

This jacket will definitely stand up to all snow conditions and is completely windproof, but it is more lightweight and not as durable because it is made from paclite. To be warm down to -5 degrees F, I would say you would need a down sweater like the mountain hardwear phantom layered underneath with a midweight baselayer.

Arc'teryx Dually Belay Insulated Parka - Men's

April 2, 2010

Those two jackets aren't really comparable. The absolute zero is meant to be worn on the coldest possible expeditions. It has 800 fill down and is completely waterproof. Its really only for the serious cold. The dually should be pretty warm but not nearly the level of the absolute zero. The arc'teryx is also filled with synthetic insulation instead of down. It is made more for extra warmth on climbs when you are just standing around, put on over your climbing layers.

The gascans won't just fall down if you're sitting still, but you might have some slippage if you're doing vigorous activity. They aren't really made for that though. They should be fine for day to day activities and will be more or less slippery depending on the finish you get.

Oakley Rocco Pant - Men's

March 20, 2010

No I would definitely look for some gore-tex shell pants and layer underneath them. These are not nearly substantial enough in terms of waterproofing and durability for high altitude mountaineering. If you are going to be doing this kind climbing I would look to mountain hardwear or arc'teryx and find something with gore-tex pro shell. You won't be sorry you spent the extra money when you stay dry in a rainstorm.

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

March 18, 2010

I have to disagree with J. Troxell on this only because I have seen this used as a mid layer with success. My father uses an Alchemy along with a Gore-tex shell for one of his skiing jackets. It keeps him warm and is great because you can just shed the shell and use the softshell if it becomes warmer. Using this as a mid layer will not disappoint. If you're looking for a very high level of breathability this may not be the best choice, but for downhill skiing I think it will be more versatile. If you're looking for something even more breathable, you should check out the monkey man fleece, it has high loft and high breathability but lacks versatility.

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

March 12, 2010

It depends on what you plan on doing in it. If its for just casual wear or hiking, it should be warm enough for those temps. If you're skiing it should be pretty good below 50 degrees, over that it would probably be too warm, not to mention lacking snow. If you're doing something more active like climbing or biking it would be too warm. It also depends on the wind.

Millet Super Touring Softshell Jacket - Men's

March 9, 2010

I would say this jacket will perform well for your needs. Polartec Power Shield is very breathable while blocking most of the wind. I think this should be light enough for some warmer temps. Something with windstopper will probably be too warm for 50 degree temps especially if you are doing something active. It doesn't breathe quite as well and it provides a substantial amount of warmth.

Anything with windstopper will be moderately warm on its own. Power stretch will be more air permeable and not wind resistant, which will be best for layering. Nice!

Mountain Hardwear Beryllium Bib - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Beryllium Bib - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 20, 2010

I got these to match my beryllium shell and they are exactly what I was expecting. Super lightweight and tough material is good for skiing. I love that they have suspenders but only come up to the navel, which is a great height. I'm 5'9 and about 145 and the medium fits great. They were plenty warm with a thermal layer underneath. The watertight front zipper is a nice edition and the zippers down the leg. They also are loose enough to accommodate my acl knee brace and the articulated knees are nice. Powder cuffs fit well around my ski boots and let no snow in. Reinforcement around the ankles are a good edition to prevent cuts from skis. I haven't had them out in any real wet stuff yet, but if they're anything like the jacket, I'm sure they'll be grade A waterproof.

The only thing that would make these better would be more pockets. There is only one small one high up on the bib, which is good for a cell phone or something small.

Rating for this product: 5 February 15, 2010

I have had this jacket for a few years. It replaced a North Face raincoat that had gotten too small for me. Perfect for the rain, especially on warm to hot days because it is so thin and light. On colder days, all it needs is a fleece midlayer. I love it because it weighs nothing and I can take it anywhere. Its also pretty good for spring skiing. I've washed it a lot and could use a new DWR coat but that is the only problem. Sheds rain like a pro.

Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 9, 2010

I got this jacket for Christmas to go along with a mountain hardwear shell. I have to say it is much warmer than I even expected. Usually fleeces are useless on their own, but with the windstopper, this one is good down to the mid 20's with just a t-shirt underneath. When it gets colder I'll put the waterproof shell on over this and its good into negative temperatures. I wore this under my Beryllium skiing in single digits with pretty high wind with just a t-shirt underneath and I was never cold. Easily the best fleece I've ever owned and it even replaced my TNF apex bionic, which I gave to my brother. It looks great too, a nice change from the Denali's that everyone wears.

The North Face Nuptse Down Jacket - Men's

January 19, 2010

Just by looking at the zipper, standard YKK, I would say you could zip this into any TNF jacket that has the zip in capability(it says whether it has it in the tech specs). Zipping it in may not be very good though because of the thickness. It may be too bulky if zipped in. I would just put it on under a shell instead of zipping it in.

Bridgedale Multi Sport Sock - Men's

January 17, 2010

do these have the elastic band that wraps around the arch/middle of the foot. I hate socks that have this and most athletic socks seem to. The picture makes it look like they might not have this band.

Great Jacket

Mountain Hardwear Beryllium Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Beryllium Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 27, 2009

My favorite jacket that i have owned to date. its a great shell that is completely waterproof with plenty of pockets. i have it in red and i love the color. its my second mhw shell and i got this one because i knew it would be durable and last forever. i haven't gotten out skiing with it yet but i'm sure it will perform excellent. the only slight downside is the enormous hood. i know its meant to go over a helmet but it looks a bit big if i put it up if its raining or snowing. i've got the mhw windstopper tech jacket that i layer with this and i haven't been cold in it yet. great quality.

EDIT: I've been out skiing in this jacket in single digits with wind and it was perfect. I was never cold with just a fleece and a t-shirt underneath. Completely water and windproof.

it'll probably be about the same warmth as the alchemy. its not as water resistant either. it can be worn on its own on warmer days but i use it as a layer much more often in the winter

Mountain Hardwear Ropeline Backpack - 1600cu in

December 24, 2009

would this pack be useful for day to day activities and school as well as skiing. i ordered the independence for more of an everyday pack, but i think i would return it for this if it is versatile enough. i know they're about the same size so would it be worth getting this one for skiing?

Mountain Hardwear Beryllium Jacket - Men's

you will definitely have room for layering, the arms are also a little longer for added room. i have this jacket and it fits the windstopper tech jacket underneath with room.
