least bulky,lots of flotation

Kokatat Sea O2 Life Vest

Kokatat Sea O2 Life Vest

Rating for this product: 5 October 18, 2009

Kokotat has a real winner here with a vest that you forget it's on yet has very safe, adjustable flotation. I have had one of these since they were introduced and have used it on many long paddling trips. This spring in Greece I capsized in the middle of a 15 mile crossing between islands in big rolling, breaking swells. When I found myself in the water holding on to my boat I thought about pulling the ripcord to inflate the vest but realized I was floating fine without it and that the extra bulk of an inflated vest would make the re-entry more cumbersome. What I learned is I'd only use the vest inflated if I would end up spending much more time in the water.
The one big pocket holds my EBIRB with expandable room for other stuff and the smaller pocket with stretch sides holds my VHF radio firmly. Both pockets have plastic D's for tethering contents.
I especially like the fact the lower back of the vest is just mesh and straps not interfering with my seat back.
The vest is very adjustable for fit and comfort. Overall the ultimate sea kayaking life jacket!

Better Than $300 Orthotic Insoles

Montrail Enduro Sole LP Footbed

Montrail Enduro Sole LP Footbed

Rating for this product: 5 October 14, 2009

I'm glad to see Backcountry has restocked the Montrail and Montrail LP insoles. The heat formed insoles are better than any other I've tried including Superfeet in several colors, anything from Dr Scholls, and two different Dr prescribed $300 orthotics. I was suffering from Plantar Fasciitis and nothing helped until I tried some heat moldable insoles from Sole' which is the same principle as the Montrails, becoming molded to your foot after being placed in the oven for a couple minutes then placed in the shoe or boot you'll be using them in then standing in the shoe til they cool. The Sole's held up well but when I went to buy some more for other footwear I found the Montrails on sale for about half the price and that's when I switched.

The regular Montrail I use in boots and the Montrail LPs I use in anything lower profile like my Merrell Chameleon Stretch or biking shoes. I've worn them everyday for years in my work boots and no longer have any pain in my heal or calf from the PF. The insoles last me over a year of daily wear, and can be remolded and refitted
in another shoe.

Over time, usually when they're on sale, I have purchased different insoles for every boot or shoe I own because I didn't want to have to switch insoles every time I put on a different pair and they mold to each specific pair of shoes differently. So now each new shoe I buy, I get some Montrails to go inside for comfort and support.

Good idea needs slight improvement

Backcountry.com Long Handled Spoon

Backcountry.com Long Handled Spoon

Rating for this product: 4 June 21, 2009

I don't know who came up with the long handled spoon originally but it address the problem of stiring up your dehydrated dinner after you pour in the boiling water. It reaches into the corners of the bags much better that regular spoons and keeps you from burning your fingers in the stew. Then scoops the meal out of the bag without getting goo all over your paws. I would suggest that they turn it into a spork for the ultimate camping utensil.

Usless melt to the pan spatula

Jetboil Jetset Utensil Set

Jetboil Jetset Utensil Set

Rating for this product: 1 June 21, 2009

I bought this set mainly for the spatula so I could flip a pancake or turn an omelette on one of my trips. I was trying out a new titanium cookset/frying pan on my last one and the frying pan didn't distribute heat worth s#%t and the spatula melted to the pan when I was trying to rescue my pancakes from burning. What a mess. In theory, one could control the heat in a camp stove but that is rarely the case so a good spatula is necessary to manage breakfast. Some other reviewer suggested a small metal spatula from Pampered Chef, fortunately, I had one and find it a realistic alternative to this. I do really like the Backcountry Brand Titanium long spoon but that is another review.

Full featured mesh back PFD

Kokatat Bahia Tour Life Jacket

Kokatat Bahia Tour Life Jacket

Rating for this product: 4 October 2, 2008

My main PFD is a Kokatat Sea2o which is the lowest
profile, most comfortable vest ever. That is mainly because it's inflatable either manually or by pulling a ripcord when full inflation is needed but that is another review. What is similar to the Bahia Tour is the mesh back with foam mostly mounted high up. Until I got my Sea02 my PFDs would always ride up to rub my chin.
Resuming paddling rivers with some class three water I wanted a solid foamed vest with the mesh back but with all the pockets and lashtabs I had become accustomed to with touring models.
The Bahia Tour is just such a design. I looked everywhere to see a photo of the back before I purchased it and couldn't find one even on Kokatats website. It does have a thin piece of foam in a sleeve at the bottom of the back below the mesh section, I slit open the sleeve and removed the foam then sewed up the slit to make it more like the fit of the Sea02. Manufacturers warn against modifying PFDs but this has a huge ammount of foam on the front and was rated highest in floatation so the little bit of foam I removed shouldn't be missed for my body weight.
There is so much foam in the front the vest felt awkward when I tried it on but after fooling around with the adjustments got it to fit comfortably and have paddled a few long days on the river in it and it is very comfortable.
This would be best for paddling sit on tops with tall seatbacks or anyone like me who had a problem with vests being pushed up by the seat. If your only paddling big water get the Sea02

Not as comfortable as the MsFit

Kokatat OutFit Tour Life Jacket

Kokatat OutFit Tour Life Jacket

Rating for this product: 3 October 2, 2008

I sent this one back after trying it on. Not as comfortable as the MsFit nor as many pockets. I liked the Sea02 best for big water with the MsFit or Bahia Tour better for swift water.
