Expat Americans living in Munich, Germany. We love the outdoors whether it's cycling of almost any type to hiking, snowshoeing and more.

We REALLY miss American style camping in the mountains. It's nearly impossible to do here.... sadly.

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's

January 30, 2011

So, I've got to choose between the Beta AR and the Alpha SV. Is there really much of a difference other than material and a couple more pockets? Mostly, it'll be used for multi-day trekking in the Alps which tend to be rainy where I live. Thoughts? Thanks.

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's

January 30, 2011

I wear a size M and I'm 6' and about 185 and I've got pretty broad shoulders. Maybe it's that I like the jacket to fit fairly close to my body. For the most part, when I wear outdoor clothing like this I'll be moving a lot and wearing wool or a tech fabric underneath to keep warm.

Suunto X6HRM Stainless Steel Heart Rate Monitor Watch

Suunto X6HRM Stainless Steel Heart Rate Monitor Watch

Rating for this product: 1 March 12, 2010

I bought the 'normal' version of this watch a few years ago with giant hopes of using it to train, etc. Apparently, if I'd waited another 6 months it would have saved me years of aggravation as I got a Mac about the same time as the watch. In short, it doesn't work with a Mac at all except through Windows and that program, Training Manager seems as though it was written by a high schooler in basic IT class.

The T6 and others seem to work with better software and other programs can download their data. Not so with the X6HR. Just be aware of that. Seemingly, Suunto will never change this as it's the largest visited topic on the Suunto discussion board and their only comment is 'We don't have time to work on it.'

Beyond that, it's a wonderful piece of equipment and I've enjoyed 'playing' with it for the whole time that I've had it. I just wish I could really use the HR features, etc. and I want others to be forewarned before they make the same mistake that I did.

Atlas E10 Series Elektra Snowshoe - Women's

Atlas E10 Series Elektra Snowshoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

We've now had the chance to go out quite a few times. My wife has only one complaint and that's with the color. Aside from that, they're comfortable, work really well with a womans strides, the fit is great, quality is excellent too. Would I buy the same ones again? Definitely!

Atlas Atlas Snowshoe Elektra Tote - Women's

Atlas Atlas Snowshoe Elektra Tote - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 December 17, 2008

The tote is simple but extremely effective for doing what it's supposed to do... hold the Electra snowshoes. It should work for many other brands as well.

I did a lot of research before choosing Atlas snowshoes. I got them in the mail, pulled them out of their box and I have to say that I was immediately impressed with their quality, materials and design. We'll try them out this weekend out in the Alps and I'll report back on how well they work.

Black Diamond Icon Headlamp

Black Diamond Icon Headlamp

Rating for this product: 4 December 17, 2008

I've had another old model Black Diamond headlamp in the past and even though it was tiny, I liked it alot. So, when I needed a more powerful light for a variety of uses, I chose this one after a fair amount of searching. It's quite nice. It is a bit heavy but from what I've seen, all lights of this variety are heavy. It's exactly why they provide you with the "top-of-the-head" strap. If you have a need for a light that lasts a long time and has a lot of adjustments in light and positioning, get this one.

It's quite nice, simple and effective. Basically, does what it's supposed to do....hold Atlas snowshoes. I'm sure that'd work just as well for many other brands as well.

Black Diamond Trail Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

Black Diamond Trail Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

Rating for this product: 5 December 17, 2008

I also bought these poles after doing alot of information searching on the internet. Everyone pointed to these as easy to use, having quality construction and very comfortable as well as light enough. I honestly can't dispute any of it. If you're in the market.... do it! Buy these poles unless you can or want to afford carbon these will fulfill your needs.

FYI - we use them for hiking and snowshoeing.
