A lot of warmth with little bulk

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2011

This jacket keeps on kicking year after year and wash after wash. It breathes well and insulates great under any hard or soft shell outer layer. If this jacket didn't do such a good job I probably would have bought a "nano-puff" like jacket years ago but I simply haven't had the need.

Bye-bye polypro

Stoic Merino 200 Bottom - Men's

Stoic Merino 200 Bottom - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2011

Aren't you sick of polypro longjohns that start to stink the moment you put them on? After a while they stink right out of the dryer. Where does that smell hide? Merino is warmer, softer, doesn't itch, and doesn't stink. Not even after a weekend of skiing. In a pinch you can wash these in the bathroom sink, toss them over the shower rod and they'll be dry and ready to go by morning. I picked up two pairs on sale and I'm sold.

SmartWool NTS Microweight Boxer Brief - Men's

SmartWool NTS Microweight Boxer Brief - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2011

I got a pair on sale. I wish I had gotten two. These things don't seem to ever get funky, not even after a weekend of wear. No itch. No chafe. No more monkey butt. Just a cozy home for your boys.

My feet are in heaven even when the rest of me is in agony

Goodhew Taos Quarter Sock - Men's

Goodhew Taos Quarter Sock - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2011

Last month I wore these on a 135 mile one-day bike ride from Telluride, CO in the San Juan mountains to the deserts of Southwestern Colorado and Utah. It was in the 30's when we rolled out of Telluride at 8am and over 80 degrees for several hours in the mid-day sun before getting to the finish line. My toes never froze in the morning and didn't feel hot as I pedaled through the desert in the afternoon. After the ride, I took a shower and changed into some clean clothes; however, my socks were still fresh enough to wear home. I have two pairs and never leave for a long day of biking (or hiking) without them.

Good durable softshell

Stoic Monolith Softshell Jacket - Men's

Stoic Monolith Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 6, 2011

The jacket would be perfect if it had pit zips. Even without them it's still a decent jacket. Really sturdy material and fairly water resistant even after several years of use and a few washes. There's enough stretch to the fabric to make wearing a fleece underneath comfortable and yet it still fits well in the spring and fall with just a t-shirt.

For the 90% of the time you don't need a hood

Marmot Sharp Point Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2011

Super sturdy jacket, huge vents, two big pockets and little else. When skiing trees that are so tight you're snapping branches left and right, this is the jacket you want to be wearing. I wouldn't be surprised if the fabric could stop bullets and there's almost nothing dangling that could get snagged. No hood. No 5-pockets with big zipper pulls. Nothing. I completely zip up the collar when things get really tight in order to protect my neck since the outer fabric is like kevlar. On the inside, the jacket has a soft fleece-like feel and there's an extra bit of soft fleece near the chin to eliminate chaffing. After three seasons of heavy use, the jacket finally wore out. Marmot replaced it with a brand new one. I'm 5'9" (160-170lbs) and a large fits great with or without a fleece layer or impact gear. Oh, and yes, that's a monoski but I don't speak French and my 80's hot tub time machine is broken. I do however ski with 210mm under foot and can turn on a dime.

Bomber jacket and a bomber warranty!

Stoic Bombshell Jacket - Men's

Stoic Bombshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2011

This jacket is fantastic. I'm 5'9" (160-170lbs) and the large fit perfect. I use this jacket for basically everything in the winter; skiing, xc skiing, snowshoeing, biking to work, walking around town and other assorted winter activities. The jacket fits great, and can handle a base layer, a mid layer, and a fleece jacket on those -20F days or impact gear on other days. On the other end of the weather spectrum, with the vents open and the jacket unzipped, I have no trouble regulating heat in the backcountry; xc skiing or otherwise. Plus, when it gets too warm, I just roll the jacket up and wear it like a fanny pack.

My home resort is Crested Butte and in the past two seasons I've taken some big falls in this jacket (cartwheeling over rocks and through trees) with little more than a scuff. I've been speared by tree branches so hard I've gotten stab wounds and the jacket remained undamaged. Same with tumbling over rocks. I bleed and the jacket is no worse for the wear. I use these with the bombshell bib and the one exception to being bomb proof was a fall last year where, during the yard-sale, it appears as though the pants got slashed by an errant ski across the knee. My impact gear (the hard candy shell kind) may have served as an impromptu cutting board. Regardless, Backcountry replaced the product immediately. You guys rock! Your products are amazing and your customer service is even better.

Bomber pants backed by a bomber warranty!

Stoic Bombshell Bib - Men's

Stoic Bombshell Bib - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2011

These bibs are great. I'm 5'9" with a 30" inseam and the mediums in blue fit perfect. I use these for basically everything in the winter; skiing, xc skiing, snowshoeing and other assorted winter fun. Probably too baggy for real XC pants but I'm indifferent since they don't restrict movement and breathe great. Besides, who says "skittle thug" isn't the new look for XC? Kidding.

Garmont Adrenalin Alpine Touring Ski Boot - Men's

February 12, 2009

Get rid of the lacing system? Who walks around in liners in a mountain hut? Listen, if you plan on doing any skinning or hiking then the laces are a must. That is of course unless you like your shins slopping around inside your boots for the entire trip up. If you plan on spending your entire season riding lifts then I guess you might not need them but if that's the case then why are you buying AT boots?

Best fleece ever!

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 16, 2004

I picked this fleece because I was tired of every performance fleece being wind proof and/or water proof. I have a shell for wind and water. What I needed was a fleece to fit under it. The "systems" (fleece+shell) stink because, once zipped in, you usually cant use the powder skirt which might be why they then have to make them wind/water proof. The "Monkey Man" rocks. It's as plush as a stuffed animal, very compressible, and fits perfectly under a shell which is where fleece really belongs.
